My 1:20 scale plastic model kit collection

I love this scale. They only ever made shite, or Formula 1 Grand Prix cars, which are shite, so there is only shite in this scale. Brilliant.

Furthermore, this scale brought us the most politically incorrect box art ever:

Wonderful!

But there is more shite. Loads more.

That's a superb collection of model shite in quite an unusual scale too.

Welcome, btw.

Lovely kit collection, including one of my dream cars the Mazda 110S Cosmo. Don't Hasegawa do a 1/24 of this?

What make are these, Arii? Would love to see the actual kit inside as well.

No you don't...

Arii is an ancient Japanese model company, probably more famous for making a plethora of Gerry Anderson related kits in the Sixties and Seventies. These get reissued on a pretty regular basis.

Their car kits however are mostly done from moulds they ended up with when they bought out other model making companies. Their 1/20 scale range of cars are all made from tools that were initially made by a company called 'LS'. They are all "curbsides", meaning, there aren't any opening features, there is only very rudimentary chassis detail and no engines. Those kits were initially marketed as toys in Japan, clearly targeted at juveniles, and they all could be motorized with electric motors. This led to the lack of underbody detail, and often even the interiors were very severely compromised to make room for motors and batteries.

However, those ex-LS Ariis have detailed interiors and well proportioned bodies, so they can be built into quite authentic curbside models.

Wow brilliant collection!

Those Japanese kits are mental, I love the boxes.

I've got one or two myself, all basically detailed and with motors.

Wow! That's some amazing stuff. I always used to laugh at the Cedric, though.

Or its stablemate, the Gloria, which I'm sadly missing.

The Gloria was oft used in East Asia as a Taxi, kinda like the equivalent of the Hackney.

Here I only ever saw them used for banger racing. But you gave me a nice inspiration. I may build an Asian taxi from the kit.

Spottedlaurel will love that lot when he sees this thread!

A nice collection indeed! I have the 1980 and ’84 Skylines, started the former several years ago but still got lots to do on it. Opening doors, and there is an engine but it’s rather out of proportion as it’s widened to take the electric motor...

The only other 1:20 I had was this Tamiya Celica:

1:20 Tamiya Toyota Celica LB Turbo Gr.5 kit by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr

But I sold it recently as I just didn’t think I’d get round to building it. Much like all the 1:24/1:25 stuff I have

Thanks!

You are talking about the Nichimo kit, which is not made from the same tooling as the ex-LS/Arii one. It's was the same series as the Mazda Cosmo. There was also a Hakosuka, which I'm after like the devil is after the soul.
