Audi Coupe

I am off to look at a 92 Audi Coupe tomorrow night. One of these ones:

I know naff all about these other than I have always wanted one and they have never been cheaper.

I am looking at a 2.6 v6. Has anyone got any experience of these and know what I should look for? Speaking to the vendor he is being cagey about when the cambelt and water pump were last done although he says it was in the last few years and he has done sod all mileage whilst he has had it. Are these a big job on these or a piece of pish?

What else are big no no's that I need to spot. They are so cheap I don't expect it to be perf-ict but any idea of any big problems that these have?

The major downside is that they're completely and utterly dull. I remember going to look at a V6 and I can't actually remember if I drove it. I did look at a five-pot one once, which I thought sounded meatier, but it was a complete shed, so I waltzed away from that one.

Still a very nice looking car though, especially considering what it replaced. I don't mind the butch looks of the original Quattro, but it's no beauty.

I watched the review on the original Top Gear some years back and Tiff Needell (who was a registered partnership for tax purposes so he could split his self employed tax liability with his wife) said the same. Saying that you were not keen on that Saab we both owned and I loved it (kind of regret selling it really as I really did like it) so you never know.

Hmmm. Will see what it seems like to drive. Like you say they are smart to look at. It will look nice parked outside my house when I cant afford the fuel......

I prefer the look of the earlier shape but these are still nice looking motors, they drive pretty much as you would expect a car to drive no better no worse, the V6 does go well and sounds pretty nice when up the rev range, if the price is right it should serve you well.

on the cambelt issue i would want confirmation its been done as the V6 must be a pain to do, my last boss had an avant V6 and i dropped it of for its big service, when i collected it there was just something not right about the engine note, it was a little gutless so was returned to the garage where the head mechanic said it will be an iffy sensor, the following day it was returned sorted turned out they fitted the belt wrong  that could have been nasty and ruined the engine not good for a main dealer :D

Auto gearboxes made out of chocolate, and some have bizarre p/steering and ABS pump arrangement.

One of the mechanics at my local air-cooled VW place has one as a daily & took it to main dealer to have the belts done so I'm guessing its not the easiest of tasks.

Personally I think the earlier 5 pot is far superior & would have one in a heartbeat but I'm a little biased because I had a couple of 100's & 200's with that engine & they were superb.

The 2.2 would just about stretch to 27mpg, I suspect that the 2.6 V6 may be thirstier.

If it is the same engine as was in the Audi 100 (c4) then I hated it. 2.6 V6 sounded nice but that was it. No performance to speak of and utterly dull. Sold it and got a Mazda 323 GTi .. much better.

Okay, so I think I need to be sure with the cambelt. Will see how much one is at the local Audi place tomorrow to give me an idea as if its a pig I would be dubious about me doing it. The one I am looking at is a manual so hopefully gearbox issues will not be a problem.

Its not that one M'coli but I have been looking at that as its quite nice (except the wheels). Looking at the rest of the stuff he has its obviously a trade in and it was up for 900 on Ebay a couple of weeks ago. Looks nice though so may be a possibility if the one I look at is not up my street as will probably be able to knock him down a fair bit as it will only end up at auction otherwise. Here is the Ebay for that one:

They're decent enough old shitters but the V6 is a waste of money because they're not that fast even in a straight line and they don't really like corners. Drives just like a late 80s Audi 80 saloon because that's what it is underneath.

Think Volvo C70 but 10 years earlier.

I might entertain one for £500 but then I don't really like Audis.......

My experience of more recent Audis has taught me that despite Audi's vorsprung durch technic galvanising process and anti-corrosion warranty they can rust like a 70s Lancia.

Really? That shape shouldn't rust - I had a '91 Saloon that was pretty sheddy in all respects but rust is one thing it didn't have - apart from oddly, on the very tops of the front wings. A lot of them seem to go in exactly that place. The galvanising in the early 90s was pretty spot on so if it rusts, it's been crunched.

I had a Turbo one (1992) and it was great, I thought. I bet the boot lock is fucked and the rear brakes have seized ("They all do that sir"). The boot lock can be hard to come by.

Aberdeenshire is a harsher environment to steel than Yorkshire, I believe. Also, Tayne, don't put him off with tales of rusting on 1970s Lancias, he has one on his drive, I think!:D

Ha ha! Yeah I do have a 70's Lancia rusting on the drive.......However its considerably less rusty than it was when I drove it up there.

Been to look at the Audi. Volksy came along too for a ride and to have a look over it. Its sodding lovely. Deposit left and am picking it up tomorrow. Its so cheap for such a fucking nice car I am expecting it to go KA-BOOM on the way home as it seems too good to be true but looking at the prices they go for it does not seem unreasonable. I am not going to go into too much detail about it as don't want to tempt fate until its home, but I am well looking forward to getting hold of it.

I had pretty much convinced myself that I was not going to buy it on the way there but after looking at it and taking into account the price I could not say no. If it turns out I don't like it I should be able to punt it on without much or any loss with any luck. However as I don't drive much these days there is no reason that I should not be able to keep it if I like it, even if the fuel consumption is not great.

To add extra points for his inclusion in the 'What a Jolly Top bloke' league Volksy has even offered to drive me over to pick it up tomorrow. Result. A few beers will be winging themselves his was over the weekend for his time.

Not bad cars but typical audi numb driving experience. bit slow too with only 150bhp...

Ive always loved these, they have a great chunky look to them. They're horrid on fuel.

Especially when in the red.

Well the Audi is here. Very pleased I am with it too.

Its very straight drives right etc etc.

Unfortunately I did not manage to get a picture of it at the side of the M62 with the hazard lights on. Not because it had broken down but because I am a dunkoff and decided not to go to the slightly busy petrol station just before the M62 but to chance it to the next one which I thought was a mile or so down it......was actually a bit further. Thankfully Volksy was driving behind and had predicted that I am a total goon and had brought a petrol can so drove half a mile to the petrol station round the corner and rescued me.

The interior is lovely, no wear on the seats or anything, all very posh. Very slight vibration in the steering wheel at speed, ABS light came on for a bit but has gone off now and a couple of bulbs on the dash are not working. Other then that its sodding ace. Very happy. The big question is what will the urban MPG be like?

However it did not use much fuel on the way back. Was pleasantly surprised. Needle hardly moved from (a few miles outside) Liverpool to Leeds and I did put my foot down a few times.

All in all a sodding bargain for £500 even if it does end up being pretty thirsty.

Will do a full report in time. Its a bit wet today and I am just about to head off to a wedding (lovely day for it).

That seems a great buy for 500 quid. I had a 2.0E a few years ago and really liked it. Nothing ever broke on it, other than when a number plate fell off when I did a dukes of hazard over a hump back bridge at about 60mph.

Oh, I like this a lot. Fancy one of these myself, but need to clear a bit of space/raise a bit of cash.

Soon, I hope.....

"Man buys 500 quid Audi and likes it despite everyone saying it's a rust prone dull shed". Quelle Surprise.

Old Audis are alright. I'm looking at old A4 Avant later in the year as my new worthless-but-quite-good work shed.

Bloody hell you're brave leaving the Fulvia in the elements. On a rainy day. outside. Crazy.

Been there for weeks. The rot is fast.

Looks tidy - they don't fetch much now, although £500 for a solid, good looking motor like this is a bargain in my eyes.

I'm glad you ignored all the comments about Audis rusting. Audi are still way ahead of the likes of 10 year old Vauxhalls, Ford and some of the Japs. When I sold my daily 1997 A4 Tdi (rustfree), I replaced it with a 2003 A4 TDi (rustfree) and it serves its purpose brilliantly. They are good cars.

Its a lot more solid than when we first got it. Now has inner sills and a floor. Volksy came round last week and we lifted the body off the engine etc and moved it back so that I can start welding in the new O/S subframe mount and sort out the front of the N/S front corner of the subframe which is also rotten. Its not completely out but everything is suitably far forward that I should hopefully have enough room be able to weld in the new metal.

If its still difficult we will just wheel forward the whole lot.

Also glad peoples like the Audi. It really does seem like such a bargain. I hope it proves to be. Going to go for a spin in it now I think. :D:D
