Hi Gang,

Picked this little beaut up last Friday after it was advertised on the forum. One owner from new and garaged since 2009 after he gave up driving due to ill health.

I spent today hoovering, scrubbing and cleaning the thing. It sure was minging! A bag of egg custards on the back seat was consigned to the bin, along with a collection of country and western CDs and assorted nic-nacs, bits of string e.t.c. Typical giffermobile.

Bodywise, apart from a rust hole found in the inner wing under the O/S headlight and assorted car park dents it's all very straight and tidy The interior is pretty good, after a good scrub but the rear seat seems to have had something spilled on it which has caused it to rot (maybe egg custard juice?) it's all very usable though.

I had to take a rear drum off to free off a sticky handbrake and noticed a weeping wheel cylinder- something for the list.

I can't get the engine to run! I'm not very good with diesels and all ive done is flatten a couple of batteries. Easy-start doesn't work. I think the small amount of fuel in the tank may have gone off or something. Any ideas?

Plans? Well if it tuens out to be any good then I hope to replace the Volvo with it. I don't need a car as big as a Volvo and the cost of fuelling it is a pain. 55MPG and the possibility of using 50%veg oil does appeal.

I'm short of one hubcap, does anyone have one like these?

Next steps are to just get the damn thing running and get it MOT'd!

Giffer-scene-tastic.

That's ace. I'd love a 205 XRAD.

Feeling the Giffer-tastic French Peasant mobiles love today

That looks ace. No idea on the running issue, except maybe an air leak.

Posted

That looks lovely. Since it is warm, I would suspect an air leak too. Hav you primed the circuit? There should be a hand pump somewhere to get the pump primed.

Hi Tim

It's scrubbed up quite well! Hope you manage to get it going. Keep us posted.

Cheers Ed (the chap wot sold him the Pug).

Thanks Ed, and if you ever end up with more shite to offload you know where to post it!

I have pumped the priming bulb thing under the bonnet and can feel that it's full of diesel (or some other liquid!) Maybe I shoukd just tow it round the block a few times and see what happens.

Electronic stop control on the pump.It is probably stuck, give it a little tap with a spanner. You should hear it click in and out when you put the ignition on.

Good idea, I deffo can't hear any clicks when the ignition is turned on. I take it it's easy to find?

Or failing that take the plunger out. The stop solenoid is on the fuel pump, it's the only thing with a wire going to it.

These old indirect injection diesels need a lot of heat to start even in the summer, are the glow plugs working? Worth replacing the fuel filter too, they are only about £3.

Usually on the back of the pump. Can't quite make it out but there is a cylindrical thing underneath the throttle cable and maybe that blue wire under the air intake should be connected to it.

Excellent purchase - 205's FTW!!! :D

(Thanks for the topmost picture, too - Having removed the chopped front springs from my car the other week and fitted OEM coils, I thought it looked sky-high... Glad to see that's actually the way they came from the factory...:lol: )

I see it! I'll investigate tomorrow, when the battery has charged up again.

If fuel pump proves to be ok, check the condition of the battery cables and the starter motor. Oil burners need considerable oomph to start and although the motor might sound ok, if it isn't in good condition and cranking with sufficient force it won't compress rapidly enough to cause ignition. This can be caused by worn bushes, rusty innards, corroded and oxidised terminals and or leads, missing flywheel teeth.

I have got the 5-door brother of this car, same colour, interior etc

Does the glow plug light go out after a few seconds, could be them? wot do I know? was a prob on my Rover :|

Any idea what it used to tow? I love 205's - especially the 3 door.

The following should help:

1) Crack open the diesel input banjo on the injector pump (located by the stop solenoid on the metering head, which is the part of the injector pump that the pipes to the injectors emerge from) pump the hand pump until diesel spurts out then tighten banjo.

2) Crack open all intector pipes at the injectors. Spin over on the starter and after a few moments diesel should emerge from the pipes. If it does not try removing the innards from the stop solenoid and trying again.

3) Glowplugs, useful even in this weather. Check power is getting to them (if the above fails) the test each one individually by flashing it over the battery with a jump lead (carefully, should get very hot indeed and glow hot at the tip).

If the above fails it is likely to be something more complex...

Thanks for all the info guys, i'll put al the ideas into action later today.

I don't think it used to tow anything, the tow bar was used to mount an OLDSKOOL bike carrier, the ball itself looks totally unused.

The glowplug light on the dash lights up and goes out after about 5 seconds. No idea if that means the plugs are working or not!

Posted

Wow  that has cleaned up very nicely. :D Base model + bog standard diesel = little to go wrong. It has 'win' all over it.

Good luck in the search for the missing wheel trim.

Ok,

I cracked the banjo nut and pumped the bulb until diesel came out, then cracked the injector nuts one by one, cranking the engine until diesel started to appear (this took about 10 seconds of cranking). The stop solenoid is working fine by the looks of it. The glowplugs were removed and attached to a pair of jumpleads. Frigging hell, the get very hot indeed!!

Still no joy! The wife has promised to tow me round the block later on- if that doesn't work then I don't know what to do next. I'm enjoying the crash course in basic diesel tinkering though!

*UPDATE*

Mrs Lankytim kindly towed me around a bit with the Volvo. That damn thing don't 'alf pull! Up at 30 mph and in 3rd gear I dumped the clutch and nothing.... did it again a few times and eventually it burst into life! No smoke from the exhaust, nice quiet idle, accellerates smoothly, and surprisingly peppy. Back on the drive I let it run for 10 mins to charge the battery and shut down. After a couple of minutes it's starting first turn of the key, I'll have to wait and see if it starts OK after a few days inactivity.

The only reasons I can think of for the non-start issue are an air lock I failed to bleed out, combined with a build up of spiders in the combusion chambers. Either way, it's now deffo a runner and i'm very pleased!

Posted

Hurrah! Excellent work!

If it proves tricky to start after it has cooled, I would first look at valve clearances which can close up on these ;)

Posted

It still starts A1 after 40 or so minutes... not that thats a difficult test or anything. Took the jack out the play with it and found a few scabs on the inner wing. Poked them with the jack handle..... you can guess the rest. I think its quite a common grot spot on these. All the same a couple of £20 patches should fix the issue. I guess it's a big ask for any 20 year old car to be rust free, even more a 20 year old french car.

Hi Tim

Glad to see you got it going. It defeated me but I didn't have anybody to give me a tow! Was a bit worried that I'd sold you a duff one. Wishing I had persevered with it now as really wanted a 205. Reckon it was a good deal at £50 after all!

All the best. Ed

Posted

Nice one, Tim. You've had a right touch with that and they are absolutely ace little cars. Top bombing old bean!

Posted

Great to see you've got it going, :D

I tried to tow start a Megane with one of these, unfortunatly it turned out that the rear chassis rail was crusty so the third attempt removed the tow ring and lower rear bumper

Invisible repair the next day with cable ties FTW

Posted

Nice one Tim. Superb engines in these. I'd be chucking a new fuel filter on it pretty sharpish - though there's always the slight trauma of having to bleed it correctly to avoid having to get the wife/Volvo combo back out again. Well done for saving it.

Posted

I had one of these that went from sailing along at 70-80 to completely stone dead in about 8 miles, all due to a blocked filter, never known owt like it.

Posted

Hey, Ed, recieved the service history and brocure today, thanks! The service history has been gifferised, the previous owner has serviced it himself and written in the dates and the mileage, his writing getting more scrawly and nonsensical as the years went by e.g. February 11, 1 March, 27 2 1999 49000.... 3-10-2004 75 miles, however it looks like it's had an oil change every 3000 miles, which is a bonus!

Posted

Arr, that be a nice little motor and no mistake.

Just gone to see if the little garlicmobile starts up OK and found the front passenger footwell full of manky water. Not only that but the battery has gone flat too- I suspect the shit "tevion" CD player. Bumhats! Google reveals that the sills on these can sometimes fill with water in heavy rain, which spills inside the car whe the sills get full. Worth investigating!
