Is honesty the best policy?

Need some help and advice! Had my insurance renewal for my 1993 Cavalier 1.8i LS Hatch and nearly fell off my seat. £597.78 is having a turkish that's £120 up on last year.

So i clearly need to shop around for a quote. I have got 8 years no cliams lost 2 years a while back thanks to a polish audi driver an my then insurance insisting it be

settled 50/50 but that's another story. But this leads me to my next problem you see. Since last year i've lost my job an despite my best efforts an breif odds an ends

im still unemployed at the momment and living off £71.50 a week so things aren't the best to say the least.

Im worried that any insurance company will run a mile if they found out im unemployed or give even a worse quote than the one i've had. An i can only afford £50 a month

max to pay for some too. So do i tell them im out of work of fib them and pray for a miricle on the job front? As im 28 single male it seams im in no man's land with the jobcentre

as they don't even seam intrested it what jobs i've been applying or if i ask them about any extra training etc i just get fobbed off. To be honest the cavalier the only thing

keeping me going now an can't bear the thought of not having my car even though i can't drive it much with the lack of cash etc.

What should i do? [Apart from get a job i know. Im am trying!] :)

Try the classic insurance people, some may take you on - I'm with Peter James who I find very good. Other high street brokers could be a good call too as they may be able to work something out for you, pop in and see them. Do state you are unemployed at present, or see how they go with "single househusband" - according to my insurance, I'm a househusband, so you can but try!

£600 is a bit much for a 93 cavalier unless you're a Baghdad taxi driver.

Surely to god comparethemarket.com or gocompare can come up with a third party policy cheaper than that?

Oh, and you're not unemployed - you're a house husband or house parent like M'coli says.

You don't need kids to be a house husband. If anybody asks, your daily duties involve some light dusting in between watching Jeremy Kyle and doing the ironing.

No call center worker would dare question any further.

Chin up on the unemployment front - I spent a year on the dole so I know what you're going through. 8)

Peter James won't touch it until next year. They're pretty strict on the 20 year thing. Had to decline a 1993 BX because of this! Other classic brokers may well be worth a go though.

Could you not volunteer at your local charity shop one morning a week or something?

It'll give you something for your CV, you can call it part time work so the insurance bastards don't butthurt you on the Cav, and it'll get you out of the house and doing something positive and adding a bit of structure, potential employers lap that shit up.

Volunteering would have to put down as that, rather than a part time job. Its still a good idea for other reasons though, as said above

I would shop around for the insurance, as £600 for a 93 Cavalier does seem pretty steep. When I was unemployed and told the insurance company they didn't change the premium much at all, they didn't say it explicitly but I guess they thought I wasn't likely to be driving around much.

Fuck!? Want to borrow my little feckers?

Bring em back when they are 18....

I'd be honest purely because of the scare stories of insurance companies doing everything they can not to pay out. I have to say that's far more likely to happen if you claim against your own cover (i.e fully comp) but I'd defo be wary of not being completely honest.

Agreed, insurance companies will try anything to avoid paying out.

Have you tried Bell? I find them the cheapest for my Vectra. Comes in at about £400 for my Vectra which isnt bad considering it has a shite crash rating and a few modifications.

Adrian Flux are pretty accomodating too although can take the piss on certain points.

IME, once you've got a rough figure, you just need to keep playing them off against each other. I went through 7 or 8 'specialists' last time, losing around £5-£10 each time, until it got very tiresome and they were only moving by a couple of quid. Overall I suppose I saved around £50 by doing it, but still think I'm paying way too much.

An thanks IainL an MrDuke for the suggestions i'll have a look over the next week or so as i've got till 28th and let you all know how i get on.

Cavette i think i'll be stright with them an see how i go as you say, could lead to problems if anythink was to happen further down the line .

Battling through Birmingham today to see about a job an avoiding 3 near misses including the taxi driver who thought a red light doesn't apply to him an seeing some of the lack of basic motoring skills on display no wonder car insurance keeps going up!

IIRC, insurance companies can invoke the 'Material Facts' clause, which may mean that if you fail to inform them of something which they deem to be a Material Fact, they can void your insurance, with all the legal and financial aggro that that will entail, (the least of which will be telling your new insurance company that your last policy provider voided your cover...).

It really comes down to whether you want to drive whilst insured, or not.

Or you could write a book, a novel, a diatribe on running an old car, whatever.

You've got a bit of time & a computer.

Then you're a writer.

That will be a pound please.
