The past couple of days have been almost entirely unsuccessful.

 

After clearing up the great oil spill of Tiverton, I spent the rest of yesterday evening rubbing down the rear beam, shock mounts and drum backing plates with a wire brush as the wire wheel for my grinder was so worn out that it was non-existent. After a while I became bored and decided that maybe it would be better for all concerned if the smaller parts were in a washing up bowl full of acid. Five minutes later, they were.

Which has cleaned them up very nicely after being left for 12 hours, rubbed back and left for a further hour.

 

After spending a fair while on the beam, it has turned out that both bump stops are utterly shagged so will both sides cutting out and welding in a Heinz beans can or what ever else I can lay my hands that is roughly the right shape. Oh well, worse thing happen in Jaywick.

Finally today before packing up I took out and hosed off the first lot of de-rusted components from the acid and popped in the parts from the other side, at which point I turned around and smacked my foot on a Rover SD1 shock absorber that I stupidly left on the floor, stepped back and knocked over a ramp which then fell onto the bowl of acid, catapulting it over the garage. The second environmental disaster in there in two days. Spiffing.

 

By this point, I really couldn't be fecked with this carry on any more so sprayed the hose around a bit, liberally dousing most of the stuff down one end of the garage in water to mostly was away or dilute the acid and set up a dehumidifier at the other end.

 

I look forward to an equally enthusing day tomorrow as I attempt to remove the old bump stops and accidentally cause nuclear Armageddon localised to just my garage.

Great stuff PB 8)  The spring cups always eventually rot out on these. My spare is the same - needs surgery.

 

A couple of new subframes appeared on Ebay last week. sold pretty quickly though...

It may have been a while, but there has been some progress, but not much.

 

I've finished de-rusting and painting up the suspension and rear brake parts, here are the last two bits to be painted except for the axel itself, but I have found something to fix the knackered spring cups with.

I have also mucked about getting at the various rusty sections now exposed by the rear axel being missing. One section in particular is the bracing section shown on the last page that was supremely ruined by oxidisation that was meant to be keeping the rear trailing arm from ending up inside the sill under heavy cornering.

 

Well I spent this evening making up a new one which considering my limited tools and even greater lack of talent I think has turned out rather well. It is intentionally a little larger so that it taps into the hole it sits in will make it easier to weld in. I have checked and it fits perfectly which made me quite cheerful.

As I spent some of Sunday cleaning up the area it sits in, it will be ready for welding in tomorrow which will then allow me to weld up the various holes situated just above it.

The panel in the above is now welded in. Yipee!

Lobbing some seam sealer on and some red oxide and Hammerite should see that as I have left it for a good few years.

And the plate for the floor on top is done as well. Next for the hole just above this in the rear arch (pictured) and this corner is done.

With that done, it will be on to remove the outer sill and see how the tin worm is getting on in there, unless it starts raining again, in which case I will get back into fixing the rear axel.

Hey your welds are much better there than a few pages back

Well I have now done about 10 times the amount of welding on this car than I ever have done before, so I suppose that the vast amount of practice has improved my welding somewhat. Oh, and it's not been windy the past coupe of days.

That back axle is a weird looking thing, innit?

I suppose its shape mimics the geometry of a traditional live axle.

This thread has scared the living daylights out of me - seeing as I'm the guy who's just bought one of ebay  :D

 

I haven't seen it yet but I have it in the hands of a top man at the moment. :common070:

 

His initial assessment is that apart from holes in the boot it's not too bad  :grin:

 

I'll keep following this and start a thread for very own, keep up the inspirational work  :-P

If you've got a good one it will make you a very happy man, if you've got a bad one then it'll make you very happy, briefly and then ruin your life. Be careful of poking the metal around the holes in the boot floor, you don't want to open them up too far.

 

On Thursday evening was sunny, so the sill came off!

Not looking too bad, this might be done by the end of the weekend…

Well that’s a shame, I better get cracking then.

During the spring when I was working on this there was a solitary bee who kept heading in and out of the chassis cross member, I haven’t seen it for a while so assume it’s moved out. It left a right mess of old pollen in there. Bloody squatter.

Friday I was out drinking and today it has been unexpectedly raining so I wasn’t able to muck about with the sill any further, but after changing the oil on the Demio I made some progress on the rear beam.

The smashed spring cup has been cut out and I spent some time cleaning up the metal around it then set to work making some new spring cups.

As luck would have it, I found the perfect replacement sat un-used in my garage…

Two empty disposable welding gas canisters. Yes I do still use these as I don’t quite have the space for a larger refillable gas bottle in the garage and to be honest, I don’t find these too bad, I seem to get a fair amount of welding from each little bottle.

With them cut down to size, they were welded to two metal discs to create a rough replica of the original ‘top hat’ design spring cup.

These seem to have gone very nicely so far, and a damn sight stronger than the original design. I think that when the rest of the car has dissolved completely, these spring cups will still be around.

The springs fit over them perfectly.

In a moment of laziness, I decided to not cut out the central part of the disc with the drill and tin snips and decided to turn the welder up to eleven and blast through the metal with that to cut the central hole. This went better than expected and with a bit of tidying up, I eventually had a fairly decent looking spring cup.

I have another free day tomorrow, which with a bit of luck won’t be quite so horrendous weather wise as I want to carry on with sorting the sill, but if not then I should be able to get this beam fixed and at least partially re-assembled by the end of the day.

Brilliant.  Must admit, I saw the bit about your plan to chop the end off a CO2 canister and thought I knew where the next environmental catastrophe was coming from... glad it turned out well 8) .

 

Does your Fiesta mind being the only one without a raincoat, then?

The Fiesta is happy to be without a rain coat, mostly because it is the only one there that is water tight. The Lancia has no glass, the MR2 has a leaky T top roof and the Rover fills with water like the sun roof is open and a running hose has been put through it, even in a light shower, which as I'm sure you can imagine is a vast amount of fun...

 

Anyway, back to the Lancia:

 

Not much to report today, but the axel is now finished and ready to be put back together - once I have finished painting it.

Sadly the weather is not looking good for next week, and as I have almost completed the jobs I can do inside for the moment, this may mean that this burst of activity grinds to a stand still again.

You Sunshine are a hero, Your courage and determination knows no bounds.

What does worry me is that someone who should have known better, put their name to the MOT certificate this mess had when you bought it.

 

I am truly impressed, I have done rusty cars out of nessesity when I was skint in years gone by, Rusty Marina's, All Aggro's and Mk111 scorts with rotten inner and outer sills and the arse falling out of the boot and rear spring seats.

I would not comtemplate it now, too old and not healthy enough.

 

Looking forward to seeing this back on it's wheels.

I have also completed cleaning and painting the area above where this sits so it is ready to go back on leaving me to crack on with getting the inner sill done this weekend.

This weekend the Lancia has regained its rear axel which was a surprising ball ache of a job, especially as the new rear shocks I bought had the wrong lower bushes pre-fitted The bushes should be the same top and bottom so I nicked the top bushes from one and slotted them into the bottom of the other and have just put on one shock for the moment. I can't afford the 4 extra bushes this month and stupidly I have already scrapped the old dampers despite the bushes in them being OK. BAH!

The next job was cutting out the inner passenger sill and some of the floor to get rid of the last of the rust.

As I did on the previous side, I will be doing this in sections and have cut out the first section today.

 

The cutting was the easy part with the griding back of the under-seal underneath being the very messy part, especially as I got pelted with old pollen and bee eggs from the cross member when I attacked it with the grinder.

 

Here is the cut out section from above. It's position just below the seat runner makes it a little difficult to clean up properly. The assortment of cabling passing through this area to the back adds another element of excitement* to the proceeding.

Tomorrow after work I will finish cleaning up these sections and get a few patches made up for the floor, inner sill and cross member all ready for a tickle with the sparkle stick.

Yet more utterly unexciting progress!

 

This weekend the following has occurred:

First the new floor pan edge was welded in and attached properly to the cross member.

Then the inner sill was fixed.

Then I welded up the first half of the 'inner' inner sill. How very productive of me.

 

Tomorrow I have an actual day off work where it is supposed to be sunny, so I think the second half of the kerjigger in the inner sill will be sorted out and welded up and I might even start cutting out the next section of floor. I expect you can hardly wait.

Are you sure it's going to be able to move itself with all this metal you're putting back in?  It's going to weigh half as much again as it did when you got it at this rate.  Highly commendable work, obviously.

Ye gods man it's never ending!

 

Good on yer fer sticking at it - I get bored just polishing cars let alone rebuilding them.

 

I've had news that the one I bought cheap off ebay needs about a grand spending on it to get it roadworthy, sourcing a new windscreen is a little troublesome at the moment.

 

Quite tempted to take a punt on another one in the hope that it's less costly to fix up, though it is a bit mad buying these things site unseen off the internet, mind you there is bit of a queue of Panda owners wanting to relieve me of Y10 goodies.....

I've had news that the one I bought cheap off ebay needs about a grand spending on it to get it roadworthy, sourcing a new windscreen is a little troublesome at the moment.

 

Quite tempted to take a punt on another one in the hope that it's less costly to fix up, though it is a bit mad buying these things site unseen off the internet, mind you there is bit of a queue of Panda owners wanting to relieve me of Y10 goodies.....

 

I fitted a Y10 ARB onto my 750L and it totally transformed it... reconnecting steering input to a 'proportional' change in direction!!

I seriously dunno how you can be arsed with it. You'll never be able to sell it once you've fixed it because of the 8000 man hours put into it. I hope you like it!
