It certainly is; my mate stays near Lovosice so did a bit of wandering around that corner of CZ. I don't like the tourist trail so it was a nice change.

I'm still tempted to move out there.

Here's a shot of Louny from t'sky.

A while backI had a morris minor 950AOD, a terminal rotbox. The (devon I think) -OD series caused much consternation amongst the ruling classes way back when due to the possible combinations deemed by them to be off limits. hence no SOD or GOD. But i think therre are numerous examples of where mr cholmondley-Warner let things slip through the net

Hey CMS, AFM 2W is a familiar one. I'm assuming it's an ex-Crosville one because althought (Chester) City Transport had similar 'single number' plates I can't recall them having Nationals and Crosville did.

Indeed, Crosville SNL2, the second of fifteen (three batches of five) dual door Mk2 Nationals for the Runcorn Busway. They all had low-digit registrations, AFM 1-5W, FCA 6-10X and NTU 11-15Y.

Aha, thought it was familiar.

I think the Runcorn busway got sacked in the end, it was a nightmare trying to get round there (Runcorn) in a car and I found myself on the busway a couple of times. There was a few ex-City Transport double deckers dumped in a yard in Sandycroft a few years back by the way (can pm you rough details if required) but would be surprised if they're still there. Apparantly they were out of service and would normally be stripped for export but they had the 'wrong' engines, I think the yard owner said it was only Gardner engines that had any real value abroard, but don't quote me on that.

Pah, call that a list? Do you really want me to post up mine?:lol:

I seem to remember a Land Rover around that was WOG 771. I wonder if that got "removed" by the Authorities a few years later when things were cleaned up?

North Devon with "UN" plates were good. GUN, BUN, SUN etc...

Here in the Peoples' Republic of South Yorkshire, we used to have good ones. ET. DT. KY (pfffft) KU. WX crept in sometimes, Halifax I think..

I remember seeing lots of SKY plates for M reg. JET, SET, WET, DDT, OKU etc.

I currently have 1961 PYO-L (Military demob 1971) 1970 PEB-J (Ely, unused a short while after.... until merged with Cambs in 1996 I think.) 1982 FE (Q plated ex MOD)

1989 G-ALK (North London, believed ex-Hire Car), the remains of a 1991 J-HWX, ( I think) and the 06 plate Manchester plated Focus.

And in Cyprus…

KSZ 846, 2002 Vauxhall Brava crewcab, white. Used to be EJ51 xxx; East Anglia?

JV 481, 1971 Ford Capri 1600GT, red. I'm told it used to be STP 941K, which would be Portsmouth.

GF 8*, 1972 Ford Granada 2500GXL, Miami Blue.

YU 450, 1990 Mazda 323F 1.8, steel grey.

KRK 344, 1987 Bertone X1/9 VS 1500, gold over black. Used to be E820 TWN*, Swansea.

The other three were registered new in Cyprus, so there's no geographical element to them.

You could look at the above list and place bets on me having lived in the north-west until I moved to Cyprus; you might even take a chance on home being Southport. You would win.

*indicates a plate I have kept, that is now, or in the future will be, used as decoration.

Strict succession.

They started with just numbers, and went up to four-figure combinations (up to 9999). After that they added letters, one at first (A 199 for example). I'm pretty sure they didn't use more than three numbers on these. Then came two-letters, such as DC 894 and GF 8 (strictly, GF 008 as they like to use the "leading zeros") and finally, in about 1991, 3/3 combinations such as KSZ 846. It does throw up anomalies. You can get a 1987 X1/9 on KRK 344, for example; which was issued in 2007. Had the car been registered here new it would have worn something like UK 344. There's no private-plate option, and no trading. In some of my postings you will see cars with, for example, 370 A. These are classic cars that have been registered as such upon importation; the A suffix distinguishes them from normal traffic. Also, a regular plate (KYT 821 for example) can be prefixed with T (TKYT 821, a taxi belonging to my previous landlord) to identify a taxi or bus; or with Z (ZKYT 821, which would be a red number plate) to identify a rental car.

Meanwhile, over on the Turkish side, the same black-on-white-or-yellow format was retained after the invasion, as was the numbering system. Lower volume on the north side means they haven't reached 3/3 yet. We have friends over there who have GG 170 on their Peugeot 307. Over this side, if that was on a Peugeot it would probably be a 204 from 1973. And their rental cars (mostly Renault 9s as far as I could tell) have red plates too!

So all in all, you need to be paying attention here!

AG became Hull, hence all the BAGs, HAGs and SAGs which could all have been personal regs for the ex Mrs P

Hull also had AT, so could have also gone for FAT, RAT, or CAT, BAT etc. And there was also RH in Hull . HRH, I believe was used by minor royals, not so sure now - probably a bit obvious to potential ne'er do wells. But still available for Kings of the Estates little princesses.

You're right, the "OD" suffix was issued by licensing offices in Devon. However, "GOD" and "SOD" were never issued; the idea of having "GOD 1" would be too good, wouldn't it?

PIG, NIG and CIG were never issued in Northern Ireland either...
