Bolsover is an odd little place. It feels like a village, is the size of a town and full of all sorts of colourful characters from every rung of the social ladder. It's at once wonderfully middle class and horribly Council Estate but best of all, there's usually a fair bit of autoshite bimbling about the place. This is possibly because we're biddy and duffer central with a healthy population of unemployed folk thanks to be out in the sticks a bit.

I went for a walk to do some post today and remembered my camera for once. Typically, many of the cars and such I'd see about the place had disappeared today, but some stuff rarely moves so that was fair game.

This Corsa van is not abandoned, I see it driving about a lot. Terrible picture because there's a lot of houses with dogs in this area and people are suspicious of me at the best of times, let alone when I'm papping their works vehicles.

This is a little beauty. Suzuki Swift in silver and probably a daily driver.

Check out the modified sill.

This was odd. Someone had very carefully placed this trim in plain view. Normally these are just stomped on or frisbee'd.

In town there is this. Now I don't know if someone lives in it, or if it's extra storage for the Antique Centre it's parked behind or something to do with the Pub next door. When I first moved here and saw it I thought it was a Renault.
201203-05.jpg.e1238f4538a83f6dbf74d50498f8075b.jpg

It's far more splendid than a Renault, this carbuncle in fibreglass and surface rust is a Winnebago. I can't deny that I'd like to have it for my very own, though what I'd do with it I have no idea.
201203-06.jpg.b76451ceef768826332b2d935dfda91e.jpg

I hope this is a support vehicle and not a Transit with racing pretensions.

One thing that did give me a sad was when I was nearly home. There's been some ancient tin garages sat here probably since the '60s when the estate was built and either the Council have cleared two of them or they've been nicked. Just one forlorn green garage remains.
201203-08.jpg.b7cccb675e856ac16b9459e2e9f3c099.jpg

Had to stick a camera through the gap on the door to see if there was anything interesting... but no. Bit of an anticlimax.

Cars that were nowhere to be seen today were the massive dirty/satin black Mercedes camper with Cornish stickers, the blue Reliant Rialto, the lovingly bodged white Renault 9 and the Nissan Moocra (it's not called that, but it is cow themed). As I get more snaps of some of the oddness that trundles around out here I'll be sure to add them to the above.

Some choice* areas round there fella, and impressed with your spotting skills.

You weren't actually too far wrong with the camper by the way, they were Renault based, I remember looking at a couple on eBay. http://www.lesharo.co.uk/French_Rev/fre ... _desc.html

Fuck me, it looks grim there. Has reassured me that where I live is actually not all that bad....

I dont think the weather and wintery landscape helps like. Pikey 'Racing' transit is ace.

Posted

That wheel trim is from a base model Saxo as far as I know.

Posted

hehe, it's actually not really that bad out here, I could show you some nice pictures of the place, but this doesn't seem the right forum for that sort of thing ;) Was a pretty grim day too, all overcast and cold but I quite like it out here, much nicer than living in the middle of Sheffield.

Lol, as I was typing this the local rag and bone... I mean scrap man was doing his rounds with the loud speaker shouting out "Any old scrap?" from his truck. It's like I'm still in the early '80s sometimes.

Posted

I quite like the look of the place :) It appears to be, in the word of our local brew 'Unspoilt by Progress'. Parts of the Black Country ( eg Cradley Heath, Rowley Regis, etc) are also still like this, especially the area around the Suzuki, and are infinitely preferable to the alternative vision of power-mad planners and greedy developers, who will happily destroy places like this with open space and a sense of community to replace them with nasty little boxes crammed into every square inch of space. Places like this are just as worthy of preservation in the same way as the centre of Bath, even if they will never be World Heritage sites.

Posted

The only thing I know about Bolsover is that Dennis Skinner has been the Labour MP there since 1970!

Whether or not that has anything to do with the attractiveness of the place...I couldn't possibly comment.

Posted
Aren't there 7 water towers in Bolsover?

The only one I've seen is just off the A632 Langwith Road.

Always reminds me of Blidworth, equally depressing but has some interesting cars around...

New spots today, but not in Bolsover. I headed over to Sheffield to see friends and get Mister Bunny an outside play area.

This little red Fiesta has had a hard life, but clearly someone loves it because it's got AA relay stickers and Vehicle Watch 25 stickers on it. Nasty dent in the side, but otherwise pretty much as I like to see these.

Those Fiestas seemed to have almost died off overnight. Dent aside that actually looks pretty decent, as you say someone must love it.

I think they've been passed over in favour of the more desirable Mk1, which is a shame because these aren't a bad looking little car.

Going to dump some more stuff in here.

First up, finally got parked next to the local novelty that is what we call the Moocra. Cow themed with Help for Heroes paraphenalia in the windows. I was transporting bits of wood with the Princess.

201203-15.jpg.3bfa368f9c335778c4a857da883ebc8d.jpg

Then a trip to Lincoln. I spotted more stuff than I photographed, but it's difficult to snap stuff when in a moving car. So we missed out on the £300 Nissan Micra (K10, boxy shape), the powder blue F reg MR2 and the red F reg Mini. But I did snap these.

Peugeot 405 for sale. There's a metallic green one for sale at a garage at the bottom of the hill near me for I think £349 or something similarly low, with tax and test at that. This one was about £600 I think.

201203-16.jpg.b55b5288d4b6c80343210d5f63a11bff.jpg

I can't remember why I photographed this. It's not a car, or any vehicle of any sort... must be a reason for it I'm sure.

201203-17.jpg.12cc73a071f9a1a657a145a5690dc117.jpg

In Lincoln there was this 5 door Peugeot 205. These seem quite popular in Lincolnshire, I can only image it's because of the rugged nature of them and the cheapness. This one was probably a diesel too.

201203-18.jpg.93a377d58ac453eb4b78a236c1b4e9f4.jpg

Renault Scenic with mismatched wheels and a roof rack but not going for scene points.

201203-19.jpg.92190fe644c57a46094f64011a073262.jpg

This camper that you can't quite see was great. As many proper accessories as a camper could have and as unstable looking as these little Japanese camper boxes always are. I need to get a shot of the one that's the next size up from this at a garage on the way through to Chesterfield because it's in Autoshite colours with gold-fading-to-silver wheel trims and a brown and orange interior.

Is that the place in Langwith/Nether Langwith? They haven't half had some cack in that showroom over the years.

Nether Langwith, there's a small old fashioned looking garage next to it.

This is the first meet I've got to for bloody ages thanks to a variety of events. This time it wasn't in the Polo, but the first outing for the Princess.

Got to the rendezvous point at Meadowhall Retail and was followed in by Sam (Captain Slow) in his Montego. Looked like we were the only ones there and we toddled off to Tanyard after waiting for quarter of an hour. Gave me a chance to get some snaps of our two old British cars.

20120418-03.jpg

20120418-04.jpg

Sam's Montego is shockingly tidy and while he did point out a couple of cosmetic flaws, I really wouldn't have noticed them had he not pointed them out.

20120418-05.jpg

20120418-06.jpg

With my exhaust blowing bad enough to make the Princess sound like an aeroplane inside and a tractor outside, the going was a bit tough. Steamy windows, no low down power thanks to the exhaust, no intermittent wipe on the wipers and traffic meant it was a bit of a battle at times, but we got to Tanyard eventually. Just as well I had Sam to follow too since I realised when we got into Rotherham that I've never actually been to the Tanyard shopping precinct before.

Hit the monthly club meet tonight over in Rotherham. There was some quality chod to be spotted and I'm putting them here for you to enjoy.

You can see all the pictures by clicking this text

Dad's shonky looking Carina, Sam's not-shonky looking Montego and a very red Audi Quattro. Quality shite that.

20120517-01.jpg

Roy's Grandad is a handsome old thing.

20120517-02.jpg

Worth pointing out that the carpark at Tanyard isn't flat, which is why the Montego and Princess look like they're leaning towards one another. I can assure you, the Princess does not have a serious list to starboard as this photograph might suggest.

20120517-07.jpg

5ltr V8. Craig has awesome taste.

20120517-12.jpg

There's a reason they call him Dangerous Dave, I'm not entirely sure what that reason is yet.

20120517-13.jpg

OMGKORTINAKHAOS

20120517-14.jpg

These seem to have risen in popularity of late, I think 4 turned up to the meet, all in various guises.

20120517-19.jpg

Mick's spotless Escort Cabby in metallic blue over silver is a beautiful thing.

20120517-20.jpg

Timewarp condition, one might say.

20120517-21.jpg

:D

20120517-26.jpg

I promise, I haven't broken down again! I was demonstrating to my brother that there is no way to see the front displacers and suddenly, the Princess was surrounded by men having a look under the bonnet and reminiscing about Princesses and the good old days. I was pleasantly baffled by this.

20120517-27.jpg

Not just a sneaky sleeper Viva, but a two-door estate. Fantastic understated thing with a Ford engine!

20120517-29.jpg

Luxo-shite, with a sumptuous oxblood leather interior.

20120517-31.jpg

This Beetle had us all baffled. I suspect it was running Porsche Boxter underpinnings what with the 4-stud hubs and the engine that while aircooled, didn't sound right for a Beetle. Also, it's lowered and has none of the usual Beetle camber on the back end. Very interesting, and not a rat-look pretender but a genuine work in progress as we found out from the lady in the chippy who had spoken to the lad about his car. All we know is apparently it's modern underneath and old on top... would like to know more.

20120517-33.jpg

I've saved possibly the best shite until last. This gold Toyota Tercel on MR2 alloys was excellent and had my brother drooling over it and asking if it were for sale. The interior is a lovely gold shade of brown from dashboard to tweed seats to carpets.

20120517-37.jpg

20120517-38.jpg

I needed this meet, it perked me up and highlighted who the decent people are once again. Cars keep me sane(ish).

I have corrected the picture links. Not entirely sure why they weren't working, this photoset seems to be recalcitrant.

That Beetle looks VERY similar to one that used to turn up to the Random Nights meets in Sheffield/Rotherham. Can't remember the guys name, it was about ten years ago but that was a pretty bog stock standard Beetle with more or less the same combination of panel colours. Perhaps it's coincidence. DVLA have it down as a 1285cc which is standard VW 1300 T1 engine, so either fancy tailpipes or undeclared mods.....

I'd love to know if Random Nights still do their thing - meet in a carpark and spend most of the night driving between different places, usually pubs. Once you got there, you started putting ideas about where to drive to next. I remember calling it a night once having started in the centre of Sheffield, leaving the pub and heading towards the motorway to find I was at Junction 42 or something daft, we'd gone miles.

Posted

The consensus thus far does seem to be it's a very well modified standard Beetle engine but it really didn't sound like a Beetle, it sounded much, much better. Perhaps the chap building it is one of those rare people who actually knows what he's doing?

Indeed. I have met several dubbers who actually know things. I said this in the RR thread, but Beetles went to 4 x 130 in the early sixties (I think). It was only the really early [rare and valuable] stuff that was 5 stud - at 5 x 205 or something insane like that.

Still, it'll be funny when my mate gets his Hebmuller drophead out. No-one knows about that, or where it is, or that it still exists. Gonna be a laugh watching the dub droogs dribble over that. Might actually go to the VW thing at Tatton when that happens. Normally it's:

'Oh look, a Beetle. IT HAS BEEN LOWERED. Wow.

Oh look, a Mk 2 Golf. It is orange. IT HAS BEEN LOWERED. Wow.

Oh look, a Polo. It has Porsche wheels and IT HAS BEEN LOWERED. Wow.'

Been a while since I spotted anything and had my camera with me, but today I took the camera on the off chance and I'm super happy that I did!

Sadly, I couldn't photograph the Autoshite brown Skoda Estelle driven by a smiling lady, or the beige and brown Renault camper driven by a grumpy man. Nor was I quick enough off the mark to get a snap of the pre-smiley face Granada Scorpio in Chianti. But, I did get these lovelies for you all.

This probably belongs to the Funeral Director, they had the fleet of DS420s and Jags out today and this lovely Daimler Consort (Thank you for the correction, Sir Tainly Barking, probably of Stanton Ho!) was parked nearby.

201206-01.jpg.fb86cb9325c74a2f6ee6fec3e371454c.jpg

As I was about to set off, giddy at such a wonderful spot, this delightful and pristine Alfa Romeo saloon drove by. Apologies for the atrocious photograph.

201206-02.jpg.ab849d7b3b8b649ff01a2389990b4113.jpg

Went to get some petrol and finally remembered to take a picture of the rather sorry looking day van they've had on the forecourt since forever. It really is a shed.

201206-03.jpg.07040e938a49dd635b96b5835af51f08.jpg

Then, in Chesterfield, there was this nice little Peugeot 309 (thanks for the correction, Albert) in the staff car park at the motor factors.

my bad... I get so confused with Peugeot 'names'.

Posted

That dead van is a mid 1990s Chevrolet or GMC. The fault which resulted in it's being parked up must be quite terminal as live ones are worth a reasonable amount to those who desire such things, particularly when appropriate bling is attached.

Made it along to the Motornutz Chippy Meet over in Rotherham tonight. Pleasantly colourful selection of cars there and even though I didn't stop long due to other commitments today, I still got my fill of interesting tin and even some admiration for the Princess in daily driver spec complete with bird poo on the roof and mud fans on the rear quarters.

Finally managed to park next to something that makes the Princess look as big as she is! British Leyland Mini and Steve's glorious powder blue Triumph that is *still* a favourite car.

20120620-01.jpg

Steve's Triumph is, as I've said many times before, a lovely thing. Currently wearing winter boots, I'm looking forward to it getting it's summer shoes back on.

20120620-02.jpg

I'd got this shot lined up nicely, then that chap stood in the way... I should've asked him to move, but I was feeling socially awkward so didn't.

20120620-03.jpg

I think that the Sirocco was for sale, the Porsche is a very handsome regular (the car that is, I don't know who the owner is, they could be a munter).

20120620-04.jpg

Line up shot.

20120620-05.jpg

Some lovely Capris. Fun fact; the collective noun for 80s Capris is a Frown (I may have made this up).

20120620-06.jpg

20120620-07.jpg

This was lovely, for most it's just a Lada but when it purred into the car park for me it was something of a head turner. The wheels are a love-hate thing for some, but I think they work quite well. Sounded super healthy.

20120620-08.jpg

One of the myriad club Cortinas.

20120620-15.jpg

20120620-16.jpg

That Porsche again.

20120620-17.jpg

The variety of colours was great this meet, really cheery looking. One could be fooled into thinking it was summer.

20120620-18.jpg

A handsome black Escort, nicely detailed.

20120620-20.jpg

20120620-19.jpg

Dangerous' Range Rover. This is far from being a Chelsea tractor. I need to get a shot of this from an even lower angle for maximum effect, but I was on the floor as it was so this will have to do for now.

20120620-21.jpg

This little orange Fiesta was new to me.

20120620-28.jpg

The chap that owns the Tercel has been umming and ahhing about selling it with the wheels and a whole bunch of spares for not a lot of pennies. If you're interested, seek out banzai-nath on the afore-linked Motornutz forum.
