Here is a 1958-60 Commer van. This is a genuine one owner, 15k miler and still owned by the original guy who had it built with the fruit and veg stall canvas and wood backend from new and was in service until 1976 when it was parked up in the workshop it now sits in. Mr Jermy is in ill health so this is possibly for sale but needs LOADS of work to the panels, outriggers, floors and a bit on the chassis, woodwork and canvas have survived better than the metal!!! What a find! There can't be many Commer vans of that vintage around nowadays.

I hope someone takes this on and restores it to it's former glory, it looks lovely!

Ditto what everyone else said. That's a very early one of those, isn't it?

Posted

The PB came out in 1960 so that could be one of the oldest, if not the oldest one left.

I'd love to see that restored to spot-on mechanical condition but with all the patina, original signwriting etc retained.

Props to Mr Jermy for keeping it alive-ish all the years.

That's utterly brilliant. I hope it gets restored, but I hope it doesn't get TOO restored. Far too many vans have all the character restored out of them and end up shinier than when they left the factory.

I just registered in order to say - wow, that is incredible.

Posted

That's fantastic. I hope it gets saved and is restored to how it was was.

I didnt know these were made that early - that would look awesome rolling up to the local town market on a Saturday morning!

I know someone who'd love that, and he's into restoring old trucks so it'd be easy for him.

Defo needs to be saved- that's a good candidate for oldest surviving. Believe it or not all the panels are available for these. A guy in coventry makes them

Quite frankly too much want. I *love* rolypoly Commers, and I'd love to own one eventually.

What a find! I was given a copy of the monthly magazine for enthusiats of classic vans/light commercials a few months ago and there was a feature within of the chap who remanufactures panels for these Commer/Dodge vehicles and the collection of them he has himself, he would certainly be the best person to give this one the best chance of restoration and survival

That's lovely. Did the pick-up version leave the factory with timber drop sides like this :?:

There was a collector of these recently on our local 'Look North'. He's in Leeds or somewhere I think.

His Fire Service version was in a recent edition of Practical Classics...

That'd be Martin Maltas. He's nuts on commers and has about a dozen I think. He even operates a hire service where you can rent out a '60s commer camper.

If its still going check out commervanfan.co.uk, a band of enthusiasts who probably already know about that pick up

I put it on car and classic for the guy who rents the workshop where this is parked up as the old fella who owns it isnt well at all and its got to go but I have withdrawn the ad as I want the best possible price for the commer along with the best home. Going to take a breath before deciding its fate. The phone didnt stop ringing...........................

Got a local person coming to view wednesday. The best part is she is a distance relative to the original owner, is totally van mad and wants to restore this classic piece of family and automotive history, its a win win.

haven't seen one of those since i was a toddler :D

though i do hope he never left any fruit in those boxes when he parked it up as it would be rank by now

"well not as rank as that car that was full of shit on here"

That looks like a result! Keep us posted, won't you? I'd love to see this finished... in a 1970s lashed-up kind of way rather than over-restored. :D

If this is for sale, I have a buyer.... a serious one, who'd restore it properly.

She found a new home with best possible person, a distant relative of the original owner who is a van nut and loves restoring vans. She has promised to send me updates so as I get them I will post on here. :D
