They did do some cracking castings back then. As you say, usually in normal colours too.
In all that stuff this morning but not photographed were loads of them. Saab 9000 in that metallic red, Toyota Supra in the white with side graphics, Cavalier in red, Volvo 480… another one I loved (also in that box!) was the white Mercury station wagon. Not a car you saw much if at all but very cool non the less. Oddly (to me) it came out in white then disappeared never to be seen again. Another favourite were the Ford Thunderbird Turbo coupe’s - three of those in the box! Red, blue & colour changer.
It was around that era I’d have been getting them new. I definitely remember that Mercedes knew, pretty sure it came in one of the little single vehicle boxes. Likewise the Saab 9000 which I’m sure came at a similar time.
The Saab I can remember playing with in a big pile of builders sand we had delivered for dad to lay a patio, which I drove my toy cars around making little roads up to the top f the pile! The Saab has actually had its glazing and insides stained in a funny yellow from all the wet sand!

Gah! The Volvo 480 too! Forgot that one. Also a little bit earlier but the Sierra XR4i was another favourite. I loved the original white release with the special branded packaging. Much nicer than the silly yellow one with incorrect XR4X4 side graphics!

I’ve got quite a few of those Sierra’s. I did have the white original one still boxed but I think it went to @andy18s not long back?
Still got the green laser wheels one, red tizer one, yellow XR4x4, blue team pack one and silver one.
The ovloV 480 is a real gem imho, but is another strangely underused casting - came out in white, then never used again.

Evening all

I've currently got a hankering for a Dinky Vega Major coach. However there seem to be different versions. Some with a battery hole, some with a battery hole & little thing that swivels across the battery hole, some without a battery, some with jewelled lights, some without.

Does anyone have a timeline for production of the various versions & know roughly when the changes were made ?

It's just i'm a geek for knowing stuff like that, so it'd be interesting - to me at any rate 😂

Also how does the indicator thing work on the battery versions, is it easy to fix if broken & are there any particular versions to look out for ?

Cheers

Polistil Fiat 500 @Split_Pin it is missing part of a wheel, but looks like you could put a tyre over it. I may have a look in my tyre box tomorrow.

Also @Split_Pin I saw a Gorgi 1/36 Mercedes taxi in yellow, are you interested if I see one again? I also saw this Saico PT cruiser labelled £4, but probably could have got it for less, I know you like larger scale and everyday cars and I think it must be 1/32. Would you want it if I see it next time?

Hey @FakeConcern cheers, can you add the Fiat 500 to my box please, I could certainly bring that one back to life.

If the Merc Taxi isn't too dear, say a tenner max, then could I trouble you to lift it for me next time please?

I already have a lovely 1/18 Scale PT Cruiser so I'll pass on the Siaco one but that kind of car does indeed make an interesting model!

I had that exact Matchbox Dinky '59 Cadillac, as well as the non-metallic red '57 Chevy and peppermint green split window Beetle when I was about 11 or 12. They were a good balance between model accuracy and toy robustness, other than one wheel always coming off the Beetle! Didn't think they were Atlas though, just Matchbox using the Dinky name they owned?

Good score on the VW Notchback, worth a little more than £4 I'd say.

It may not be Atlas, just my guess as it's obviously not a 60s original so I expect you're right.

Yes I just had a look on ebay and I'm pleased with the VW. It was from the chap I have bought lots of Spot Ons from, but he didn't have any I fancied today.

Here's a fake for you.

matchbox-rw-nr-13-dodge-wreck-truck-vari

The three give aways are it is not in a new model box with the correct colours on the truck image, the tow hook is red and the BP decal is too small.

Wonder how easy it would be to convincingly fake one 🤣

The biggest hurdle to making a fake is the jib. Green jib has thinner arms...

than yellow jib.

I reckon a bit of attention from a file should thin the arms and shape them to match the rare truck.

Were the reverse colour ones pre production versions or something? I guess they then found the arms a bit weak so beefed them up a bit, then swapped the colours over?

The first Vega was Dinky Supertoys 952. This had the working indicators that operated when you pushed the side of teh coach down. It also made the wheels steer at the same time. I think these were made from 1964 to 1971. The version without lights is Dinky 954 which was made between 1972 and 1977. There is another version, Dinky 961, which is in Swiss PTT Postal livery.

If you want to see a restoration here's a youtube of one.

And then we have an R5 Turbo

Complete with knob.

DSCF6120.thumb.JPG.a0ea2f87ad1267cbd482740c10b330d1.JPG

It's a Majorette Motor that does not motor much. I took it apart but there's not much that you can get at. The spring is probably weak as it does not hold much power. the red knob is so you can lock the drive and release it when you want.

I completely lost my mojo  after the big Volvo F12 truck, I don't know why as it was an easy project and went well.

Anyway, this has piqued my interest, Rover 600 3d print has arrived! Very clean print, I wasn't expecting that from the pictures. Almost zero sanding needed here.

I can't wait to get started, I'll begin by fashioning some glass and front light lenses.

That does look a nice print.
Just a suggestion, but the windows and lights you might be able to use Deluxe Materials Glue n Glaze to make them.
Headlights will work with it if you paint the insides of the light opening in silver or something then put the glue n glaze over it and let it set. It should dry clear like a plastic light lense.
The windows you can apply the glue n glaze around the edge then stretch it across the opening with a cocktail stick or similar. There’s some good vids on YouTube showing it being done on model aircraft windows.
You might be better painting the car fist though if you do use it.

There is obviously a limit to how big an opening you can bridge or fill with it but for a 1:76 car it should work?

Looks good from the video, I have bought some, comes tomorrow!

I think the windscreen might be pushing it a bit but it should do a grand job of the front lights and side windows. Plus it will glue in the acetate for the windscreen just nicely by the looks of it.

It’s very good for gluing in windows and glazing as it doesn’t cloud up the plastic like cyano superglue does. I use it on all mine for that.

Tamiya do some very nice tint paints too which are excellent for doing lights. The amber and red clear are perfect for indicators and tail lights. They’ll look great onto the casting or even better if you paint it over clear plastic or the glue n glaze.

Theres a few other colours in the clear range but red and amber are probably most useful.

I have some Glue N Glaze, but only used it to repair the edge of a windscreen which was partially successful. It did cover the area fine, but was not an invisible repair as it was far clearer than the original screen! It says on the bottle it will make screens up to 6mm so I should think it would work for that tiny model Rover.

There may be more in a later chapter about innovations Dinky made etc, but I've not read that bit yet!

I only have an old pretty broken one, but the four front wheels steer as you press on that side which in turn pushes the switch to connect the lights. There is a cam on the rear axle that makes them flash as the coach is pushed along.

You are supposed to be able to do the same thing with Humbrol Clearfix. I use this stuff to stick widows, lights and chrome plated parts onto models as it does not react.

30 minutes later those air bubbles seem to have grown.

Another 30 minutes and the air bubbles are still their, but the pain has thinned down, it is still soft but is sticking to the body.

Maybe with a quicker application, I double dipped to get enough in the hole, you might not get so many air bubbles, Also this was a first attempt and I could probably get better at doing it. However, I think you are better off just cutting up some of that clear plastic stuff that a lot of things are packed in to make windows.
