I had a Cogbox delivery today to stem my withdrawal symptoms from being out bid on ebay and not going to any boot fairs lately....

So from left, Clio Mk1 in great condition, I have a Mk2 already as we got the kids MK2 Clios as their first cars, but Mrs Concern had a Mk 1 just before her current Modus. Next the Dinky Aston is really pretty nice and just needs some repair work to the bumpers and side windows, how they got broken when the screen is fine is hard see. Next the Corgi Austin Se7en, I only have my childhood one of these which I restored as it had both A pillars broken and roof bent down, plus bad repaint in yellow. this one is much better. The Corgi Custom Consul Cortina I accidentally bought is much better condition than the three i already had! Result! Plus it has interesting stuff in the back and the three lamps on the front. Are they from a Dinky Mk2 Cortina? I'll have to check them against mine. The burnt out Corgi Lancia I'll get back to...

Corgi MGA is a lovely little model I want to repaint when i get a chance. I have one with the screen so should be able to copy that rather than buying a repro.

Corgi Aston in yellow, I had one as a kid I no longer have it, I also got another one at a boot fair recently and they look almost identical and both are just as I remeber mine looking back in the 60s.

So the Lancia is to replace my bodged together Whizzwheels version on the Tri deck transporter

Looks great! Maybe not as good as the bodge job one tho...

If I use the base plate from the genuine Whizzwheels one I will have pretty much the complete set at last

I can also see that the colour orange I've used is a pretty close match

I've been busy doing domestic chores all day but I've time now to devote a bit of time to Day 1's whirlwind auction of a Hollywood director's collection of largely unloved diecast toot.

 

Bidding looked to be slow to start with.

 

 

But then Big Guns Bidder #930 entered the scene.

 

 

Can't remember if this was #930's buy but if not, someone else had equally deep pockets and equally asinine taste.

 

Yellow car not as favourable, it seems.

 

Uggers Pierce Arrow passed/not sold at $19. A lot of this stuff actually had a reserve!

 

Another #930 mic drop.

 

19 US dollars deemed an insufficient amount to bag a dusty, unboxed Rio Bugatti Royale with a broken bumper. This specialist auction house has certainly got its finger on the pulse of diecast values, of that there is no doubt.

 

Then came the whirlwind lots of Yesteryear Model T vans:

 

 

 

Van after van failed to attract any bids. Funny, that...

But then, lo and behold! A sale!

Nah, just kidding. Like you thought a paltry $8 would buy this collectible! Come on man, it's advertising a car collection; this stuff is super desirable!

 

This one documented purely for North Yorkshire content. Incidentally, all these vans that hadn't attracted any pre-bids were being rifled through in about 4-5 seconds, so my screenshot fingers were fast at work!

And look at the plummeting viewer numbers...

 

Boomer livery tax just kicked in, yo.

There's certainly more than 57 varieties of this worthless dross, eh shiters?!!!!!@

 

Then came one I had my eye on*. The eponymous Lot 273. Should attract a flurry of bids from cardboard enthusiasts.

What?! There's just no accounting for taste. Should anyone really wish to surprise me and contact the auction house to buy the cardboard promotional van and send it to me in NZ, then I'd certainly be likely to make mention of it on here, that's for sure.

 

A bunch of these generic old vans came up and were equally as popular as the Yesteryear Ts. But again, no dice on a van advertising a motor show/car museum/car auction, all of which had higher reserves than their cohorts.

 

Then they started selling racing Ferraris, which is where I zoned out. But the few I saw sell were making $40-60. Some sap bid $25 on this obviously broken one, and they still didn't meet its reserve!

 

Anyway, I don't think I'll be tuning in for days 2 & 3 of the auction but I'll admit, it was quite fun to watch a load of stuff meet nowhere near their crazy estimates.

I wonder how the owner(s) who were bequeathed this collection (and held on to it for over 20 years) feel. I'm guessing a little concerned that they won't be realising even a fraction of the $180000-540000 the auction house predicted they'd reel in...

I got £15 on a Yesteryear not long back which is top top whack. That was some odd third party limited edition, boxed in absolutely perfect condition.

I thought it might be scarce in the UK, because of what it is.  But no, eBayUK has plenty to choose from, boxed as new AND without a dust covering, starting at £25 inc P&P

I remember all these titles like Brooklyn and Franklin Mint etc from reading Model Collector in the 90’s. They seemed really overpriced and not terribly detailed at the time in the case of the 1/43 limited run models.

Edit, just looked they weren’t Brooklyn they were another white metal make, the name escapes me. Franklin Mint were the preserve of the back pages of old giffers magazines. I’ve noticed they came with gloves which seems really pretentious now. You could pay in instalments 😂

Update on my projects for those interested!

Matchbox Kingsize (early wheels type) Mercury Commuter wagon. Had its roof light holes and siren mount filled then smoothed off with filler. Primed and now top coated. Just going to leave it to harden off now.

In the back is the Corgi Buick Regal I painted in metallic red…    
I screwed it up though! 
Where the original roof lights went through I filled the holes, but the car must have been hit quite hard by something on the roof lights at some point as it had actually dented the roof in around the middle light hole. You couldn’t see it in primer but once the colour went on you could see the dent in certain light. This bugged me enough that I stripped it again, filled it and flatted it. There was also a big lump of metal flash in one corner of the windscreen so I filed that out while I was at it.

 

Then opened another one up to start.

This one’s a 007 Part work Ford Taunus TC2. Which is near as damn it identical to a Cortina mk4.

 

Really easy to take to bits. Couple of screws then just push all the plastic bits out from inside the shell. 
Interior unit is a nice little design! I might take the dash off and swap it around to RHD, as per a Cortina.

 

Body casting is quite basic, but I like it. Details are all there and it looks right. Old paint shrivelled up and fell off within seconds of the stripper going on. Wire brush sorted the bits left in shut lines etc. I’ve since filed off the wing mounted side repeaters as the Cortina didn’t have them.                                     

 

I like these! They’re about a quarter the price of the Vanguards version. Ok, it’s probably not as good truth be told but it’s not half bad imho. Certainly good enough to tear to bits and paint!

What colour though?  There were some right wafty colours on the Mk4 to choose from!

Got my daughters staying this weekend, popped into Tesco to buy vegan food for the eldest so stopped to look at Hot Wheels. Same old stuff that's been kicking about for months, except for this which she spotted in the wrong place on a different shelf

I know this has been very sought-after by the JDM collectors so I didn't think I was likely to see one

That’s one thing about it, yes. I could fill the old wiper holes then drill new ones the right way round.

Colours, I’m not sure. But I’ve got 3 of these Taunuses (Tauni!?) so I can make a few in different colours! I must admit Nordic blue on the mk4 was always a favourite. We’ll see!

I can’t even make up my mind about the Corgi A60 colour(s)! It’s sat in primer still.

I think that 007 collection was by Altaya.

 

Signal Green 2.0S would get my vote on the colour for a MkIV Cortina.

The Pierce Arrow was the first model done by Brooklin, when they were originally made in Canada. When the manufacture moved to England the Pierce was still being made. Like most of the early stuff from Brooklin they were produced in quite large numbers (for white metal models) so are quite common and not of significant value. Also the casting and detailing is quite crude compared with todays offerings. The last one I had I got £30 for on Ebay.

These days the Brooklins of 1960s stuff can fetch better prices such as this GT350 Hertz in white.

I quite like the Mustang, but the screws on the base look a bit ‘DIY store’ like an afterthought (especially the back one!).

@danthecapriman Lansdowne, who are one of the Brooklin brands, do a MkIV Cortina in Bermuda Blue. They've been make in them for years, so there is no need to pay the £132 asking price of a new one. You should be able to find a second hand one at around the £50 mark.

It was a handy thing that the baseplate's about the only undamaged part on it, other than (maybe) the steering wheel!

It genuinely pleases me to see broken and discarded toys live on in some way, and the effort you've made to recreate the Scammell transporter and its Whizzwheels load is to be commended. Glad to be part of the story!

There’s another series I found too, 1/43 again, but cars & small commercial vehicles from South America or Mexico. Some of the vehicles are basically American or European vehicles made or sold there.

Again, no idea who actually made them. 
I know of IXO, I’ve got quite a few of their models. They do seem pretty good overall.
