I think it was near the end of the run of the pre-facelift model. All my Chevettes wore this type of front, and all were red!

Got some more pics at the ready. Will start uploading onto Photophucket later and bung them on here if anyone wants to see them.

Just got two big boxes of photos out of the wardrobe. Should be able to find something among that lot! :D

What does that tunnel go under? nothing to do with the river is it? - looks much too early.

(I know nothing about Liverpool, as you can tell)

Posted

Anthony that entrance is no longer in use, but you are correct it does indeed go under the River Mersey.

The tunnels now are Kingsway and Queensway (Or commonly known as Wallasey and Birkenhead tunnel(s) from this side of the water)

Posted

Ah right, having only ever driven under the 1970s one, I thought that was the only one, didn't realise there are two.

It is, that's the Dale St entrance to Queensway in the pic. It's been there since 1934, ffs...

Having actually looked at the picture propperly, i now know how wrong i am

Did you think it was the redundant one, over the other side? I know a lot of the buildings there have been knocked down, but still, even I knew which side we were at!

TWO Anglebox estates!! There's about as many left on the road now...

And a great plate on the saloon to the right; when we used to visit my grandparents in Llandudno in the 70s, there was always an increasingly decrepit mk2 Consul parked on Trinity Road (never saw it moving and it was always in the same place!) registered 4444 K.

Ref Anglia estates - I own one of the 2 left then  according to AOC the estates are rarer than the Van's. And the standard estates are in single figures (i think less than 3 roadworthy)

And regards the Chevettes pre face lift were available to Jan 1980

Some cracking photos there Warren (and others of course), many thanks for posting. I'd never been to Liverpool until a few years ago, when they were just starting to redevelop the Docks area with art galleries, shops, etc, and my main memory is that the rest of the city centre looked like a building site, so it's fascinating to see what it used to look like. So please everyone try and capture those threatened street scenes (like Pete-M has) along with the shite in them before it's too late; history is always on the move.

I don't want to hi-jack your thread but:

Only just a couple of years ago, but could have been the 80s. Now college, bus stand and buses have all gone, guess what has taken their place

I'm pretty sure this pic is from the 80s Brixton riots, location being the Atlantic Road juntion with the A23 Brighton Road. Ironically if you were to pan 180 degress you'd be opposite the footlocker they set fire to in the riots last summer. Some things never change eh.

Great thread BTW, come next December this will probably be up there in the Thread of the Year poll :)

Queensway tunnel opened in 1934

[useless fact=] The Rotherhithe tunnel (under the Thames) was built in the days of horse drawn vehicles and that is why it has bends near the ends. Horses had a tendency to bolt when they saw the light at the end of the tunnel so the bends reduced the bolting distance. [/useless fact]

That TunnelDibble Landie. I know where there's an old Ford van from the 40's that used to do that job. It's still going. I'll try and grab a pic sometime.

I'm hoping to go out with my camera and do a bit of a here and now for tomorrows update. Weather permitting!

Or have i gone wrong somewhere?

The old photo is the main Liverpool entrance at the bottom of William Brown St, by the museum. It doesn't look very different now!

Heh, nope. The modern pic you've posted is of the Dock road exit of the Queensway tunnel.

This is the Dale St entrance nowadays.

Ok peeps, mindful that local history is only interesting if you're local I've tried to upload as many pics that I have that contain at least 30% chod content. Here's a few more and as a bonus I've uploaded a few then and now pics taken in roughly the same location.

Let's start with this gem from the summer of 1985

Looks like Fido is in trouble for eating the engine in Alberts new Skoda! I wonder how long the Estelle lasted for?

nb9.jpg

Here's some bus shite. Wallasey Corporation was the first in the country to buy those new fangled, rear engined Leyland Atlanteans. I think this is the first one with an appropriate number. Pic taken at Seacombe ferry where the wet cobbles were the first port of call for any RWD hooning on a wet day.

owp16.jpg

The first of our now and then shots is this view of Mount Pleasant Rd. Loadsa Herald content in this shot.

owp15.jpg

new6.jpg

The next couple of photos were taken in the same road which by coincidence is where the former Claim matrimonial home is situated! Needless to say I took these pics sharpish and made a swift exit!

Looks like a wedding is going on in the first pic.

owp3.jpg

Obviously the next photo was taken later in the year (1967) cos it's snowing. Yes those cobbles are a bastard in the snow! MASSHOOVE GRADIENT.

owp6.jpg

And the view today. No ADO16 or Prefect content I'm afraid.

new1.jpg

This next couple of photos are at the start of King St.

owp5.jpg

owp4.jpg

And the same scene today....

new2.jpg

Junction of Martins La and Liscard Rd Circa 1982.

owp21.jpg

And the view today...

new3.jpg

Here's a few pics of the bottom end of Victoria Rd. One of them is a repost so you can see how it's changed. The 928 belonged to the pub landlord and the Rover P4 was an antique when the original pic was taken. I wonder if it still survives?

nb5.jpg

owp10.jpg

owp9.jpg

And the same scenes today...

new8.jpg

new7.jpg

Being a bunch of inbred weirdos we like to dress our ADO16s up.

owp7.jpg

And today...

new4.jpg

Here's Wallasey Rd in the late 70s. Sceptre-A-Go Go!

owp8.jpg

And today.

new5.jpg

Due to OMG lack of memory card there's no "now" pics of the following but I think they're worth a butchers anyway...

Borough Rd Wallasey.

owp14.jpg

This is now a shopping centre.

owp20.jpg

This is the entrance to Cammel Lairds shipbuilders. The gothic building in the background is now the Hotel California rock club.

owp18.jpg

Liscard shopping centre. Now pedestrianised.

owp17.jpg

Mr Flemming is very proud of his new Maxi and who can blame him?

owp2.jpg

This is Egremont Ferry. Note the "Hello Sailor!" and late Regal. When did it die?

owp1.jpg

I hope you've enjoyed my little time tour around Merseyside.

Posted

Yep, I did enjoy it... and I know how difficult it is to work out where the old photos were taken from because the different lens lengths and formats change the depth of field so it looks completely different through a modern camera. Thanks for taking the trouble.

We all like a bit of car content in our landscape pics, don't we? I hope so, because that's what I've got! :D We'll start with one in Liverpool, for continuity...

CenturyBuilding-vi.jpg

It's the spring of 2005, and I was out in my Buick Century at the eastern end of Liverpool's docklands. I couldn't resist this!

The rest are from just up the road, Southport; 1980s, 90s and even more recent. Let's start with the ATS tyre shop in Shakespeare St:

ATS-vi.jpg

That's my Polonez, so it must be 1994 or 95.

Next up is Lawson St, some time in 1990.

Celeste-vi.jpg

The Princess was mine, and coming down the path you will see my then-GF.

Another of my cars: the Sceptre at the back. This'll be 1983/4.

Humberpair-vi.jpg

The one in front belonged to a former neighbour who took on the newsagent shop. These shops are just across the railway line from Royal Birkdale golf course, and were my local shops all through my childhood.

Let's go to the pub, shall we?

Mount-vi.jpg

I'd be surprised if the Mount Pleasant shown here looks much different, although the pic is coming up on 10 years old. That's my Daimler in front...

There will be more, and I'm still looking for the really early stuff, that my dad shot when I was little.

Woke up one morning to find this scene. It must be between December 97 and December 2003, because that's the time we lived in this house. Dodworth Avenue, Southport, to be precise.

Posted

Don't know if it's just my preconceptions or time of year or whatever but almost all the "modern" images look really miserable...

That may be down to the shit January weather, or maybe we are now living in a post Thatcher wasteland where only evil thrives.
