New-old Renault hits the road

After all the stuff posted about new Renaults just recently, have an new old one.

After having made the tyres, exhaust, brakes, cambelt etc last for 26 years, this one really did need to have some money spent on bits. Having done the whole lot myself, I'm quite chuffed that it's just passed the MOT :D

In amongst all the work, which has involved replacing every brake part, decided to save money by restoring all of the alloys myself

I don't care, as these are the cars I love and, being a 2 Litre, I love this one even more. Find most of the parts to do the job either in the loft or garage, or buying them for sod-all from ex-dealers/Ebay, just make it even more satisfying. Finding a brand new genuine tailgate, which it needed, made it even better. I just need to find two chrome roof gutter strips and stop a minor coolant leak to complete the job. Here are some more shots - ALL in full Beige-o-colour.

Proper nice, that. Good work there sir. I haven't seen those funny Froggie battery terminals since I had my Samba. Engine bay looks GR32.

want,,want,,want,, :shock::shock::shock:

Richard,,you must be running out of space?

That looks ace! 8)

My uncle had a R18 for a few years, fantastic old bus it was.

Beauiful!, I can remember these coming of the car transporter when brand new having grown up opposite and Renault dealers, I love these early 80's Renaults.

Looks fantastic, in such a great condition. Being a 2.0 I bet it shifts when it needs to.

I can relate to you finding stuff on ebay/loft/garage as thats where I find most of my stuff too.

Oh man, that is simply gorgeous. I just want to curl up in that beige velour interior and go to sleep.

I needed cheering up, and that's properly done it.

I love to see someone caring for a relatively unloved not-old-enough-to-be-classic-yet family car like this. Well done sir.

It's old enough to get free entry into most shows! Well done that man!

Magic Darts!

I really do need to pop over and look at your superb collection Richard. (I know, I've been saying that for the last 2 years!) Are you around next week between Christmas and New Year?

Thats incredibly lovely. Want.

Richard, btw - don't forget I still have a much smaller R18 waiting for you as well when you want it :D

Delightful. That interior looks so good.

I knew someone whose parents had one of these years ago, the metallic paint lacquer had peeled most spectacularly all over the place.

I really need to find another old Renault to keep the 505 company..It just doesnt feel right being Rennerless AND a Peugeot in the Garage. I must do something about it. A 25 would make a nice companion for the 505.

What about looking for a Volvo 440/460? It's a Renner 19 after all under the skin :D

Posted

Sir!! That is TEH SEKS.

Ma and Pa had a 1980 TS Estate, and I begged them to buy a GTX as a replacement, but they bought a Montego instead. I've been depressed ever since.

The 505 has the same engine as a 25, but that doesn't make it a Renault

Thanks for these comments. I've probably got as many Renaults here now, as my local Renault dealer (Alan Pond - then Paul Crow) used to keep in stock during the eighties! When I had my 18 American and 11 Electronic at Tatton show, people were genuinely interested and enthusiastic about them - especially the 18, which although forgotten, appears to really evoke (good) memories.

I can remember my dad reading What Car's used review of the 18 and saying "I knew they were great cars!"

When my 9 Avenue is painted, I'll post pics of that too. Sadly, I've got a nasty feeling that the car count here still isn't over yet!

It's definitely a bona-fide classic in my book.

Thats a lovely 18,real stunner

I love old Renaults, and as you know my Safrane V6 is my baby, but i hold a flame for old models as they are simply great cars which people seem to forget.

I,ve worked for Renault for 20 years now and have owned loads of them including V6s ,Turbos, and normal 1.1 models and really enjoyed them, the modern stuff doesn,t interest me,but it should as in 20-30 years time i will regret not taken more interest in it now!!

I,ve not posted on the recent Renault thread, but read with interest the comments placed and it seems like they are not liked in todays market,a shame they have got a bad reputation, but these old models like your 18 are a reminder of the good old days Renault had a great(if slightly rusty!)reputition...

Thats lovely, good work.

In 1998 I was offered a free Renault 18 by a farmer in Herefordshire when I was 23 ish, unfortunately in those days I wanted something "more fashionable"!!

If you fancy another Renault there is a low mileage Renault 9 about to go round the oval! :(
