m.o.t: October 2012

I bought this car a couple of months ago with the intention of swapping over some body panels with my SRi. Both cars are the same colour and the paint had faded, and laquer peeling off on the bonnet and wings on the SRi. All ive swapped is the wing mirror plastic skins as in the end I got a decent bonnet and wings from elsewhere dirt cheap.

Its a decent motor to be fair, plenty of life in it yet, got a long MOT - October 2012 and although ive not driven it much other than back from where I bought it from and around the block, it seems to go really well. The odd battle scar here and there but its solid too.

what a nob I am, just edited it.

£295.

That is proper value for a usable car with 10 months of ticket.

ta mate. yeah, need it gone asap as ive got another 5 vehicles on my drive and the Neighbours are giving me funny looks!

That Cav is a far better punt than an 800 with MOT in minutes. Less to go on strike, and plenty of ticket, and parts in much more plentiful supply! Only real thing wrong with these is the sohc Vaux lumps have cam lobe wear. A cheap set of seat covers to hide the muntered seat, and bingo. I'd touch in the rust on the dented corner though. At £295 for a reliable used family motor with 10 months test, someone will rip your arm off & beat you with the soggy end. I would set it at an 'honest' £325 ONO, which then gives you a bit of haggle room

Thats very nice.

Would it be a fiscally prudent purchase though?!!!

Pub talk nonsense! Vauxhall had this licked by about 1986 man, I dont think i've encountered a Mk3 cav with a clattery cam EVER.

That's a Bargainasaurus Rex!

I love the MK3 Cavalier, had quite a few over the years. The only one which sounded a bit "Cammy" was a 2.0 GLI, it had done 187,000 miles though :P

What Sir 10X said. There isn't a problem with the cams on these, that's rubbish. Sorry for saying this for the 1,067th time this year (or whatever) but these engines are bullet proof. I've honestly yet to find an engine that can take as much abuse/neglect and lack of servicing and just keep going. 1.8s are usually minegbag spec'd but they're brilliant for their simplicity and reliability.

If it wasn't Christmas/my hat was red rather than blue/I wasn't allergic to that colour of paint I'd be all over that. It's a sodding great car for a sodding great price.

Admittedly you did used to see stacks of Mk1 and 2 astras, and early Mk2 cavs, clattering themselves to bits all over the shop, that was YONKS ago however.

Was gonna stick the Classic up as well but seems like a bad time... so many of the buggers on here now! I'll probably put it back on the road in the spring when I can be arsed investigating the heater issues.

The 1.8 8v in mine has done 140k and runs like a sweety despite minimal maintainance for some time - think the last known service was carried out at 59k and the oil was like sludge; having dug the 2.0 8v SRi back out though I think work shall commence apace to put it right, as it's just so much nicer to drive...

I think the biggest engine problems on these are the cam and crank sensors packing up and the car going into limp mode, the Astra i had and the Cavalier SRi off my in laws both suffered from it.

If it was any other time of year id spend a few hours sorting out the cosmetics.

I HATE winter though with a passion and if it was up to me, if hibernate until about March.

I really need the old Cav gone, so if you can all spread the word and keep your ears to the ground for someone wanting a decent old workhorse with a long MOT then that would be great. Cheers guys

That's more of a problem with later Ecotec engines tbf.
