Registration transfer question

Ok am in the middle of buying another scoob. Will post pics when broadband is working again...storm took it out last night.

Ok.....the vendor has a private plate on his scooby, he's just bought a passat and wants to trasfer the reg to the passat. his insurance policy is set to transfer to passat on friday.

He wants to visit dvla glasgow to transfer his private plate to his we car and is under the imp ression that the dvla will automatically reassign the subarus number back to what it was before it was he bought it 5 yearsago.

From what I understand he'll have to transfer the number from tge scooby to the vw..cost 80. and then apply for a new number for the subaru...cost another 80. it will take a few week s for his new v5 to turn up and then he'll have to transfer it to me.

Of course the eegit should have done all this before he offered the car for sale.

which of us is right?

It'll take weeks! Use this to barter him down a few quid.

The Subaru will revert back to it's original number plate. He shouldn't need to go to the DVLA office either, pretty sure you can post your doc's off now. I don't think he'll have to pay another £60 to 're register' the Subaru either, any fees will just relate to transfer of number to Passat.

He won't have to pay to get the original number re-assigned. IIRC officially they assign it a reg which could be anything, but 99.999% of the time it is the original number - there's no guarantee of that. It will be a couple of weeks before the v5 comes back and he should definitely have taken the private reg off and got the v5 back before he offered it for sale.

When I swapped my number around, each time the XMs got their original registrations back; 'virtually', in the case of the G-reg, as it had already been dismantled!

Cost eighty sheets a pop though, as you say Scoots...

When I took YFR 716 off my leBaron Preston DVLA gave me G427 FKC, which is what it wore before I got it. Then all I had to do was get new plates made up. All the DVLA fees related to YFR, none to FKC.

I can attest popping to the Doovlay office makes for a swifter transfer of plates than posting.

Preston Doovlay swapped the plates off the Zafira onto the C8 in just 4 days (log book back, and corrected for incorrect owner details too).

Ta...the dvla are such twunts my default relationship is one of distrust.

Can't go to weegie with him tommorrow but I do trust him to do it.

Thanks all...personally I don't understand private plates..an expensive vain hassle that draws unnecessary attention to you but as I said just my personal opinion

They're ok if you get a good one. I like the XJR one on the Jag. Wouldn't pay money for it, but I'm glad it's there.

Something I really don't understand is the NI "Council Vanity Plate" thing that seems to happen to anything with a 3.0+ engine when it reaches eight years old, quickly followed by chrome wheel arches. More often than not the car is then left to rot for a year and replaced by a beige'n'chrome Mitsubishi Pikey with too many chrome plated mirrors, bull bars and a NI reg plate often spelling "BAZ", "DAZ" or something equally shit.

I did this too when I transferred a 'plate onto my car. It may even have been faster - three days rings a bell. It is much quicker if you go in person.

I inherited my 'plate from my dad so it has sentimental value to me. I like having it.
