Bus Shite

I seem to remember a few years back that all First companies were obliged to send all their used buses for scrap.  Was I wrong, or has it changed, or is this example of the open toppers and exception?  They've lasted well if they are just coming off now, that's for sure.

Popped out to do a wee airport transfer in Melbourne 15 years ago but by the time I got there the airline had shut.

Giles Fearnley, the new gaffer at First bus division scrapped that rule, I know of one operator that's had a fair few Wright bodied Scanias and Volvo Olympians for further use from First Leeds, Huddersfield, Norwich and Essex. There are quite a few escapees now, but knowing how First treat their buses, I wouldn't touch em with a bargepole

I've got to be honest, there's plenty of operators I'd not be buying from before I decided to not buy from First! I can't speak for anywhere apart from Cornwall but I'd say these days First have sorted themselves out a bit with regards to looking after vehicles.

My Olympian is ex Stagecoach and in all fairness, isn't the worst. Isn't exactly the best either but seeing as I didn't have first pickings I can't complain. Also being a school bus for years meant it wasn't exactly top priority.

Anyone got a spare £3500 for a gearbox overhaul?

I could probably lay my hands on a replacement gearbox - we've got a few Olympians in the yard.

Very smart Paramount by the way!

I daren't think what that costs on the IOW ferry.

Another one for the bus-lickers. Aplogies for the grainy picture, but I don't actually live in the ferry terminal

Re the Badgerline comment, Badgerline merged with Grampian to become FirstBus, then when they started playing with choochoos, First Group

Probably a diesel burning heater. Sometimes they're connected to the main heating system, on larger coaches or a separate blower, usually to be found on smaller minibuses or if it has been added at at later date.

I've been idly flicking through pictures on Flickr of buses that used to be around when I was a wee lad, and found the most Autoshite bus ever -

Anyone fancy a circuitous tour of the East Midlands from Lincoln to Manchester via Newark, Mansfield, Chesterfield and Bakewell on a MkII National? Thought not.

I always thought these were funny little things -

And these definitely fell out the ugly tree when they were built.....

The bottom one is ex Liverpool and bought by Chesterfield to replace Daimler Roadliners which were spectacularly unreliable machines. It's a bit like replacing a Moskvitch with a Lada though as Panthers weren't much better.

I always remember one of them ending up at Ambergate in Derbyshire as a roadside cafe. Sadly it's long gone now but what a place to have a greasy fry-up!

That old roadside caf was used as a donor for another Scouse Leyland Panther

Nah, an Ailsa B55 sounds much nicer, especially when it is being thrashed and slam changed

This morning I went to visit an old customer of mine to call in a favour and was greeted with these in his yard--
