Quelle surprise...😁

Those Nationals were a bit special. Specced with the highest rated engine and the highest rear axle ratio but no seats, destination gear and in all over cream, but they were delivered with overhead luggage racks. The seats were built specially and the buses were finished off at Walsall. Truly capable of 70mph motorway running  and were spread around to offer a private hire service alongside the regular bus services. If not on coaching duties, they were fitted for stage carriage work and so would go out on normal service work (or the few, at the time, limited stop express services offered by the PTE).

After we got bought out in 1992, a number were transferred over to us, including ex Coventry TVP854S. That one had done very little work in the previous 14 years and was like new inside. We kept it immaculate and used it for P/H jobs in-between stage work, just as it was envisioned to be used. We did fit a standard National destination display to it and you could always pick it out after we were closed down and the fleet repained/re-engined/dispersed due to its three track number blind. IIRC it ended its WMT days at Walsall.

I passed my first PSV test in similar TVP864S.

Walsall Bradford Place bus station mobile canteen, it was replaced with a decker which was still in use in the mid 70's when I started.

Staffed by two ladies and crews could buy a cooked meal seven days a week.

Replaced with an service bus with a seated area and vendin machines.

I received an aux cable through the post today and was pleased to see this rather tasteful stamp attached to the package.

Thinking about this surely stamps without a barcode are no longer useable and Google says this one dates from 2001.

Yes, you were lucky to get it without paying for the postage, as I've had to do for a couple of Christmas cards. Maybe the Postie was also into buses?

Yup, Den Oudsten.

There isn't a lot of info about this one I'm afraid, not even wether this was a one off. They did a number of Royal Tigers for the NBM, which were a bit less extravagant.

My favourite Dutch bodied Leyland has to be this:

Maarse en Kroon Aalsmeer 251 Jules Verne, Boulevard Noordwijk

Many new features for the time. Air Con; tints and air suspension! 👌😎

Seems there's a tenuous connection to ADL...

A postie into buses?  Seems very unlikely to me @Yoss

Yeah, never heard of such things.

I remember those stamps. And you were lucky to get it through as all stamps are now supposed to have the little barcodes alongside them. But I would have delivered it too. Those sort of things are supposed to be picked up long before it gets to me. If it's got as far as me I'm going to deliver it. This may* not be official company policy.

I thought commemorative stamps were ok to use even if they don't have a barcode?

I've got the rest of the line of buses in that stamp set, but I used the really most vintage ones as a stamp when I needed one in a hurry.

I don't think so anymore. There was a period when you could exchange any older non barcode stamps for barcode ones free of charge. As far as I know (and I'll admit they don't really tell us what's going on and I forget stuff) no non barcode stamps are valid anymore.

This made me curious as I've used commemorative stamps quite a few times without issue, so I just checked and the royal mail website seems to suggest that they're still legal and there was no need to have sent these back for swapping with new ones. It seems a bit like the no MOT or TAX status for old cars - a nice little loophole bonus. (Hopefully I've read the site correctly.)

Yes. It will be to do with stamps like this. Returning a letter or charging more for what was a legal commemorative stamp with a Royal on it would be considered disrespectful and cause some anger. Sort of thing the would feature in the Daily Mail.

Just proves there's nothing new under the sun, you just can't trust any photo - what would we say today? 'AI slop' I think.

You could be right, like I say they never tell us anything we don't need to know, and any surcharges should be hooked out at the mail centre (we are a delivery office, the mail centre is a giant warehouse type place near the airport that brings mail from all over the country to the Southampton, Portsmouth and Salisbury postcode areas and sorts it to go out to the individual delivery offices and vice versa).

So like I say once it gets to me I'm going to deliver it anyway.
