What are those little extra exhausts that you often see on old minibuses and coaches?

Probably a diesel burning heater. Sometimes they're connected to the main heating system, on larger coaches or a separate blower, usually to be found on smaller minibuses or if it has been added at at later date.

I've been idly flicking through pictures on Flickr of buses that used to be around when I was a wee lad, and found the most Autoshite bus ever -

 

 

Anyone fancy a circuitous tour of the East Midlands from Lincoln to Manchester via Newark, Mansfield, Chesterfield and Bakewell on a MkII National? Thought not.

The bottom one is ex Liverpool and bought by Chesterfield to replace Daimler Roadliners which were spectacularly unreliable machines. It's a bit like replacing a Moskvitch with a Lada though as Panthers weren't much better.

I always remember one of them ending up at Ambergate in Derbyshire as a roadside cafe. Sadly it's long gone now but what a place to have a greasy fry-up!
