The interior needs the mother of all valets and the paintwork could do with a good T Cut which I'll do tomorrow.

The central locking needs looking at.

The aircon doesn't work.

A wheelbearing sounds like it's beginning to groan a bit.

A bit of wind noise is coming from poorly sealed doors and windows.

The lower tailgate trim is missing.

Sounds perfect for this place!

Any car for £300 with nearly a year's Mot and some rent is a definite WIN. Its probably worth £200 over the bridge, unless the price has gone down recently.

Well played! At least if you've got a long list of stuff that's dodgy, it means fewer things to go unexpectedly wrong.

Plus I think you'll find it's compulsory to have the tailgate trim missing on these.

I remember the central locking tomfoolery on my dad's 405. You'd turn the key then it would lock and unlock for the next 20 seconds or so. You'd have to plan your pull on the handle to be in time with the pin being up! Then it would randomly do it in the middle of journeys as well. Class cars though, my BX was equally lacking turbo power.

Posted

None of those jobs sound too bad tbh and you could do them all yourself I bet and save loads of money. For the kind of money you paid it sounds like a bit of a bargain to be honest.

Old French diesel shite is the misers choice. Xantia or 405 FTW. Well batted.

Oh, and they are that slow. I had a 405 GED many moons ago and it was out accelerated by tectonic plates.

Posted

My BX feels slow (same engine, but earlier 65bhp incarnation). I can't work out if it's got a problem or if I've just been spoilt by the Rover's turbo.

Posted

You can live with that list of faults I reckon (the aircon will be R12 so not easy to fix); checking the throttle cable is a good idea and a service kit (oil, air and fuel filter) can be scored for under £15 delivered on the Bay.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure most non-turbo 405 dizzlers have Lucas pumps so not GR8 4 veg. Good score for 300 notes.

Posted

I think you made the right choice, although it does makes the mint L reg GLDT estate I sold 2 years ago for £350 seem like even more of a bargain.

Posted

Hmm.... After an exhaustive road test I've discovered a couple of things.

It does 170 miles of mixed motoring to £23 worth of diesel,

It only does 82mph flat out on a level road but seems happy enough at that speed and doesn't sound in the leas bit strained.

I'm getting 100% throttle travel as well.

I might open the bonnet and have a look at the air filter tomorrow.

Any other thoughts to its lack of speed? Other than it's a diesel!

Well bought. I look forward to seeing some photos of the car in due course :)

I guess it's worth giving it a good service, For what it cost's it won't do it any harm, The XUD lump in my old works van, a 1986 Pug 205 XRD used to go like a rocket, It would pull a ton without much grief so I'm sure 86 doesn't sound right.

Posted

I'm glad you've got something that suits. May it give you years of good service. :D Or for that price, at least the length of the ticket!

Posted

If it does have a Bosch pump then lob a lot of veg oil in it and hammer it around for a few weeks. It's honestly like having a turbo once you've run on it for a while.

Posted
So we have a winner. The 405 dizzler estate has been bought by myself for the princely sum of £295. I managed to get him to come down £55 so not all bad news.

It's as slow as you like, even by non turbo standards so I think that maybe the throttle cable might be a bit stretched.

The interior needs the mother of all valets and the paintwork could do with a good T Cut which I'll do tomorrow.

wouldn't bother th Pug CL is made of cheese and is also usually linked into the imobilizer system. There are fixes for the problems whch are usually caused by the flimsy loom to the doors shorting but it can effect your imobilzer I disconnected the CL on the 306 and removed the relay

The aircon doesn't work.

A wheelbearing sounds like it's beginning to groan a bit.

A bit of wind noise is coming from poorly sealed doors and windows.

rub in some silicon grease - usually does the trick, I'd probably lob a caravan dehumidifier - the type that is a tray of silica gel into the boot - it will take the moisture tha will have got in out of the car which will be a G9 idea before the cold hits us

The tailgate gas struts are knackered.

The lower tailgate trim is missing.

It boasts 11 months ticket and it's taxed until March 2012.

result!

Pics to follow when it's daylight.

top buy mate - keep the coolant topped up and you have nothing to fear - quite a low mileage one as well. Seriously, this is the best car you could have bought for your circumstances - I was on the miserably useles ESA for 6 months and when I went into it I had no idea irt was going to take so long to get treatment nor how the stupid costs in gas and electircity would make it so difficult to support a family on the low, and on ESA at least - sporadic payments - a car like this would have beed a winner all round.

When you come to sell it it migt be worth breaking it - if it has the Bosch fuel pump they go for £200+ second hand due to their tunability and ve oil properties.

Power wise I would give it a rddy good service -as Billy says the air filter will be a suspect. Also, if it still bothers you you can tune up the fuel pup easily just be careful not to over cook it - obviously the trade off is fuel consumption

an 850 was the drivers choice and the Suzuki a brilliant car but our of the ones you listed, when every penny counts, and it will, then you've done the right thing!

I've at last had the chance to go over the 405 in daylight. Fortunately for all you shite fans I brought a camera with me so you can see the sort of thing a modern DHSS scrounging gentleman drives these days.

From about 10 yards it looks really tidy but it could benefit (no pun intended) from a good mopping. Nice alloys though. Are they original? Chrome trimmed grille looks classy.

PICT0002.jpg

A few supermarket dents and scratches along the flanks. Nothing I can't live with.

PICT0001.jpg

Looking suspiciously like a straight car here. The trim around the door mirror has been superglued on and the glue has dripped down onto the paintwork. I made a similar error fixing the mirror on my old '89 Range Rover so Mr Bodger is forgiven.

PICT0004.jpg

The missing tailgate trim! If anyone sees a replacement in a scrappy then please let me know. I'm not arsed if it's off a Stlye, GRDT, etc. Towbar will come in handy if I can liberate a few more BHP.

PICT0006.jpg

The interior is suffering from it being used by a tradesman in the past with bits of paint here and there and what looks like a sealant leakage on the carpet. Mega comfy though. Clutch slightly stiff.

PICT0007.jpg

CD player hasn't been wired up properly and it loses its settings whenever the engine is turned off. Also the front door speakers are missing. Aircon clutch seem to work ok. Ebay DIY regas in April 2012 FTW.

A fair old bus there, are they 306 facelift wheels? Being a cock, why the sudden change of employment to her majesty Warren? Fixable?

I hope it's fixable soon! Using a 41yr old spine to try and carry a 114kg box unaided and with no equipment for a "blue chip PLC" client has pretty much screwed up my ability to work. :(

Posted

Back = bad times, but at least the Pug seems pretty decent. I'd be chucking a new fuel filter on it ASAP. Pretty sure that's what's choking up my BX. Even the NA XUD should be able to knock on the door of the ton, though they get a bit frenetic beyond 85mph.

Posted

Ouch. On the sick (and sticks!) here, but full pay luckily. Hope thats cheered you up* Like Ian sez, fuel and air filter, with a brucie bonus bottle of forte (if your not wasting your cash on food or heating like).

Posted

Looks like it's a really good car, especially considering the amount you paid for it :)

Posted

Tidy that! LX was a runout job, so the chrome grill will be standard but, as others have already identified, those alloys aren't original. Heavy clutch = they all do that, sir.

Posted

405 Diesels for the win!

Being a P reg, I would imagine its a lucas pump but you might be lucky.

Posted

That looks tidy! Well done. From memory, 405 seats should be extremely comfy, so your back will thank you. :D Maybe I should be driving a 405 too, given the state of mine atm....

^ +1 on thronery.

See my missive In Bangernomics about my 405.

Mines a turbot though, I turned up the fool a tad and cut some of the baffles out of the back box and she spins up a lot quicker, they do get, or mine was certainly very blocked so maybe a coat of looking at the back box may help it along?

Yep I have comedy locking.

By al accounts you have to be careful not to overload them as the rear beam axle can bend?

Top purchase though Sir.

Congrats of the 405 Estate!

Here's the one I owned from 1994 to 2000, a uber-rare USA-spec 1990 405 DL. It had the 8 valve 1.9 petrol, a five speed gearbox and the earlier-style dash. Seen here with Munich-reg plates to give it that authentic Euro look! Apologies for crap 1990s era digital camera pics.

Peugeot sold only a handful of these before pulling out of North America in August 1991. I sold it (and the 1985 505 Turbo saloon I also ran at the time) because the local dealer had shut and nobody would dare touch it! Pity, I really miss that car.

Automatic seatbelts FTW!

I think it's about time for a quick update now nine days and 650 miles of ownership has passed.

On the mechanical side I've begrudgingly chucked a new fuel filter in its general direction and lobbed some injector cleaner in the tank. Took a quick look at the air filter which didn't look very old at all so it was treated to a blast compressed air to clean its little lungs.

On the bodywork front I treated it to a half arsed attempt at a cut and polish and it's come up quite nice, still a few scratches and it'll never win any beauty contests but I wasn't really expecting miracles.

Decided to hang fire on dedicating too much time on the interior as I'm waiting for an allegedly mint 405 estate interior to finish on EvilBay. If I don't win it I'll get some specialist cleaners and attack it in my (plentiful) spare time.

It was standing for the last day so when I fired it up I was treated to a hideous, noxious smell out of the exhaust probably caused by the injection cleaner sinking to the bottom of the tank. to clear it I took it for a blast up my M53 shaped test track and I can happily report that the top speed has increased from 82mph to a much more respectable 95.5. Isn't it amazing what a few simple jobs can achieve? Mindful of the fact that a flat out run from Wigan to Wirral destroyed a similarly engined BX 19RD Estate I owned I didn't attempt to hold this high speed cos I need the thing to last a while. If the weather's ok tomorrow I might just give the beast an oil and filter change to reward it. A new cambelt and seal is a definite necessity in the near future as well.

So far. So good. Lets see how its first long run on Sunday goes.

Posted

Blimey. That's a serious improvement! Right, I'm going to change the fuel filter on the BX then as that's flatter than a witch's tit at the moment. Air filter cleaned, fuel filter next and I might try some magic potion of some sort as well.

Posted

The strange thing is I can move the arm on the injection pump a good 20 degrees before the revs start to rise. Is this normal?
