The Lada's dashboard is just wonderful. Love the Russian gauges so much.

A mate of mine's dad had several Ladas in the 70s. We were very amused by the Russian gauges and I still occasionally refer to petrol as SIx-eh-threen!

The Lada is fab! 8) My ex brother in law had a red one like that with the quad headlamps and a black vinyl roof in the mid 1980s. I think the number plate was something like VAH 100S :?: I think it was a 1600cc model.

What I remember is that it had odd seat belts - just the black belts with no clip & a lever on the buckle next the handbrake that locked into place. Can't imagine that it would be very effective in a crash.

My Lada had those belts, you loop the belt under the bar on the stalk and it locks into place... I can't see how it would be less secure than a conventional set-up, and I presume it met the relevant BS at the time? :?

Back in the eighties i had a Fiat "mirror fury" with belts like that................ How did they spell that????????

Old SAABS had the same set up and THEY INVETED SAFETY so I assume it's cool.

Mirafiori I think.

IIRC the saab lock bars that held the belt in seemed to be kind of serrated - which always seemed a bit dodgy.

Edit: Here's some. Although they look completely different. So I was probably imagining it.

Further edit: Like these!

OK, I've forgotten why I was looking for those now. Umm... carry on.

Yup, that looks more like it, cheers.

I don't know about everyone else but Fiat 131s are always going to be 'Mirror Furies' to me from now on :D

Andrew a delightfull find, but how did you get this over Torsten - has he been kidnapped

I'm pretty sure VW had a seatbelt system like that in the late 70's/early 80's, I recall a Derby being so equipped.

GR8 Lada. As someone who had to suffer riding in one in my formative years (my mum had a 1200 estate, then a Riva 1200L and finally a Samara 1300 3-door before I got her into a Rover Metro when I got to driving age!) I'm feeling nostalgic seeing that lovely 1500.

I think they're called TORIC belts.

What is this type of seatbelt called? Seems like a good idea, I am intrigued.

edit: Thanks!

That Lada is fantastic. How would a firm of solicitors know that they have to call you if they have a problem with old cars?

My first (1980) golf had those belts, I used to belt the passengers in rather than explain them!

Today my Lada went for its M.O.T. Here it is in the bay....

It passed, with NO advisories!! Here's a shot of the underside, showing the TOTAL lack of any rust or any other gunge!

After adjusting the headlight beam (one too low & one too high!) I picked up this...

So I'm a happy bunny! I took it for a full valet, inside and out. Here's the eastern European car washers, having a good time remembering their childhood in distant lands....

After their efforts I took a few other photos. I think the car looks really great! I've already had loads of admiring looks and comments!!! It's been hard work, but definitely worth it!

The work's been a labour of love, but worth every moment! The parts were a new clutch master & slave cylinder, 2 new rear brake cylinders, some (well, quite a lot) brake fluid, 5 litres of Castrol 10/40 magnetec, oil, air and fuel filters, a new fuel pump, some fuel pipes, some anti-freeze, a new battery & a new alternator. All in all it's probably in the region of £300. Does that sound about right? I didn't keep all the bills, but even if it was £400, I'm still happy! I had the yellow headlight bulbs in stock..... Road tax was £130 & the MOT £46 (trade)

I'm going to put a decent radio/CD player in soon, as I want to use it. HEYYYYYY!!!! I'm happy! It's the Wartburg Tourist estate next!

Posted

I like old Ladas to be honest. Happy motoring. You need a 70s period radio to go with that tbh, not some modern fangled CD player. Tapes are the future I tell you :P

Posted

Right bloody result, nice work!

Posted

Excellent work! That's a top save, well done indeed. And don't ruin it with a CD player, man! What are you thinking of! Pye radio/cassette FTW! :D

Posted

Brilliant that is superb....

And an inspired idea could be to follow your example and get all of us to write to half a dozen solicitors each ..a national network of emergency chod recovery

VWs had them, my old boy was given a B1 Passat hatchback* by a colleague that possessed this type of seatbelt clasp. I've since thought it a very elegant solution.

*The Passat never saw the road again, despite my interest in returning it to the road as but for 2 driveshaft boots and a little inner wing welding it would have been my first car, and it drove very well on the long driveway (about 200 feet) that we had. It smelled lovely and musty too! such is parental sour grapes and jealousy

This may be the best thing I've ever seen in the whole wide world ever. Not sure how it would be possible to top a two-tone beige/brown round light Lada in totally original condition.

Shame about the 'Cavette school of photography' shots though, this thing deserves a proper HI-RES HD MEGABOLLOCKS PROFESSIONAL PHOTOSHOOT to do it justice. You own the coolest car in the universe so it seems rather churlish to criticise your photography skills, but how hard is it to get the whole thing in shot man? I guess I'm just jealous.

Pleased to the Lada on the road. It looks great. :D May it survive many Siberian winters.
