Some of you may remember this, spotted by Spottedlaurel in deepest, darkest Suffolk over a year ago.

I have wanted one of these for many years so all common sense went out the window and I bought it based on the sellers description and some photographs, can you see where this is going? :D

Here are some of the pictures he DIDN'T send me........

I think we are all allowed one monumentally stupid car buying episode, this is mine.

Apart from the roof having the consistency of weetabix it would not run for more than 20 yards without stalling (despite having a brand new MOT ) It turned out the fuel tank was completely shot.

I managed to track down the only known NOS roof skin on the planet and the second last tank.

Rear screen out without damage thankfully.

Old roof off, new roof on.

If you've taken on a Fiat 130 in your time, surely you're well placed to have a go at anything this side of the Bismarck.

Roof transplant now finished and glass back in.

Stripping the front end revealed yet another nasty surprise. Some A grade bodging is in evidence all over this one.

Moar eyewateringly expensive German parts.

Great to see this one saved! I'm glad that a spot of mine led to this outcome, I hope you'll say the same...

Do you know much about its previous owners? Had it been off the road for a while?

New windscreen from Pilkington.

If they still have the tooling they will make one off screens with a choice of tints and sunstrips for not much more than Autoglass etc.

New bonnet as the old one was full of wob and/or rot.

Starting to look a little better!

Hi Nigel,

All I know at present is it was owned by the guy in Suffolk since 1989 and its been off the road since 1991.

Now that's some real dedication!, I remember Nigel posting this one, wasn't it from Sudbury way or am i thinking of something else?, anyway it great to see some real money being spend on a car like this, I'm sure all the hard work will be worth it in the end!

Fabulous!! I'm feeling absolute admiration here. Someone saving an Audi that isn't an "OMG QUATRO INNIT!"

Posted

ooh, looking forward to seeing more about this. Kudos for your efforts so far, as Ian said said, admiration goes to someone saving a non-Quattro Audi.

Bugger me, this looks very nice as well as eye-wateringly expensive! Glad you persevered with it!

I, on the other hand, chopped up a biscuit tin and self tapped it onto the front wing so that it will pass an MOT (well at least the no sharp edges clause) this morning.

Still, once it has a ticket I'll get it welded properly.

Nice Audi.

Keep up the good work! That is one hell of a restoration!

Are you going to keep it stock? :)

Or nasty Halfords alloys and ratlook? :(

It will be completely stock, no RR type nastiness of any kind. :D

Wow! Can't wait to see the end result.

That is going to look stunning once its done. :D I've always liked these older style Audis. Much classier than the newer stuff. I used to see a black V reg 200 like this with black tinted windows in the mid 90s and thinking that it looked the biz.

1980s Audis, for the win. 8)

I didn't realise it was so grotty. Great work, it must be pleasing bolting all of those shiny new bits on.

Posted

That will be amazing when it's done. Take it to a German car show (either here or in the fatherland) and people will be all over it :)

Well done for the effort!

I remember being taken for a ride in one when it was new, my uncle was service manager for the local VW Audi dealer and he borrowed one. It was an automatic, so when you floored the throttle it would kick down a gear then the turbo would spin up, it was like the whole car was taking a deep breath. Then it accelerated like when the captain opens the throttles on a jumbo jet. Endless power :D

Keep at it!

THAT is one amazing resoration job! Well done to you for perservering. Hope it all goes to plan, your Audi will come out looking and feeling almost new.

I've always dreamed of doing a restoration job like that on my Rover 800s. Funds needed though as are the availability of new parts.

Posted

well done sir - top effort - so much more important than restoring another fekin stag...

nice motah

Posted

Well, I am damn impressed with the amount of effort you've put into this.

Sehr Gut! I have a green Siku one, but its a bit smaller! How the hell did you come by a new old stock roof skin?

Posted

As discussed previously, the only car I have ever regretted selling.

If you ever think of moving it on, I request first refusal.

Despite an extensive search, I no longer have the scatter cushions, just a few relays.

With great difficulty :D

I found a German bloke who had a barn full of parts.

He didn't speak English and I don't speak German so we communicated via pictures and shouting in our respective languages :D

Sutton Bank.

If any of you know this hill,

went on holiday many years ago, had to meet us parents somewhere in the dales...

kid brother had 2CV & on arrival boasted of his double de-clutching exploits down into first

to negotiate the infamous 'Sutton Bank'

The wife & I were in the 200T & saw the signs...

that was it, some signs...

'Was that the bit where the Astra SRI thing that had been up my arse suddenly vanished?' said I

Seriously, hit the hill at about 50mph,

turbo whined...

turbo howled...

Astra vanished, but 200T crested hill without dropping down a gear - Spectacular.

Fuck all to the gallon though.
