A trickier one is Skoda...whose real name is Å koda, which is also read as the 'sh' in shite (what a happy coincidence )

Å koda is a regular word in Czech vocabulary as I'm sure most of you know. I annoy everyone in work by always putting the accent above the S whenever I get the chance.

 

For those who don't know, Å koda translates as; damage, pity, shame, loss, harm, injury, detriment, mischief, crime, scathe, lesion, overkill, or disadvantage. The name came from Emil Å koda who's company bought Laurin & Klement in the 1920s. L&K were credited in 1900 with being the worlds first manufacturer of motorcycles, fact fans.

 

An unfortunate choice of name, but with Czechs, always expect the unexpected.

It was the name of one their board member's (Emil Jellinek) Daughter. She was a renowned beauty apparently. The pictures I've seen are a little grainy, so it's hard to tell. Spanish/Austrian Jewish influences abound, the the pronunciation is proably a bloody mightmare.

Strangely on the subject of FIAT/BMW, I've always pronounced DAF as 'daff', but MAN as 'em-ay-enn'. No idea why.

 

I used to say Renault exactly as it's spelled, but was bollocked by my French teacher who assured me it was Rennoh. I tend to say Rennoh for cars and Renault-Dodge for things like those lovely 50-series things.

Obviously, I wouldn't be surprised if nobody outside of Spain/S. America uses that pronounciation! I think the Germans read it Mer-che (as in 'Che Guevara')-des.

It's pronounced "Mare-tsay-days" in German

 

And Adidas is correctly pronounced "addy-das". It comes from the company founder's name, Adolf Dassler – "Adi" is a common contraction of Adolf (or rather was, the name isn't as common as it used to be for some reason lolz)

UK/US/AUS/NZ owner's pronunciation is usually "Stage er"

 

I constantly hear Stag ear, Stadg er or stadg e ar which is fine it's rare over hear so you don't expect people to know how to pronounce it however...................... what really pisses me off is people who say it's just a Volvo made under License by Nissan or ask why I put a Nissan badge on a Subaru/Volvo/Mitsubishi, Thursday's was "just because it's got a Skyline Owners sticker on it doesn't mean it is, I see loads of cars with them on" they then asked me what it really was while stood next to their scabby "scene" lowered Polo "my turbo'd four wheel drive Skyline based daily driver........."
