What car do you regret not keeping/saving

A 20v Quattro one of these. 4WD didn't work properly, rear brakes didn't work at all, and the only thing stopping the boot flying open was the heavy spoiler. Loved it though, those red instruments and THAT sound. Had to get rid as I needed a reliable car for work (got a TDi Goof :( )

It would have been impossible, and I have mentioned it so many times, but my Gran had one of these for years, and it failed an MOT and was then scrapped, I loved that car. Might see if there is any actual photos of it about, that would be nice. But it was basically this, bar the LHD.

It was actually a rare car when it was scrapped too, even worse!

From a purely financial position every RWD Escort I destroyed when they were worthless, up to and including the RS1800 I helped to finish off.

From an emotional point of view then it has to be my black 2 door 325i BMW E30 , a car that made me feel good about myself and I'll always associate with the summer of 2005 when everything in my life seemed to be going great.

Sadly, 2 door E30s of any engine size are getting pricey.

OK, it wasn't mine, but it could have been, gratis. At the end of the day I just didn't have space for a rusty 16' V8 coupe. Anguish here.

I should have kept at least the reg. from my old Acclaim, ELR90Y. We called it Elroy.

Should have kept this:-

but my welding skills weren't up to what the Eurosport bodykit was hiding - rust, rust and more rust generously covered in filler

The plan when buying it was a Uno Turbo transplant but I think I was taking too many projects on which was why another 'one' goy away, this was a semi-stripped Bond Bug which came my way for next to nothing. Had that sat for nearly 3 years bofore it dawned on me it would never get done.

And talking of RWD Escorts why didn't i keep the 2-door Mk 2 my dad had in the Eighties and just stick it at the bottom of the garden.

Oh and my first road-legal car:-

Must have regretted scrapping it (c.1985) as I went back to the yard to get the photo.

There's probably more I regret but those are the memorable ones.

I regret us not saving a 1972 Vauxhall Victor FD 2000 SL which has layed to sink in the grass since 1988;when we first had it,it would have been a fairly fast fix,but it was 'saved' for a friend of my dad who then after a while decieded he didn't want it after all - sadly, its died a death which is a shame.

Another I miss is a Mercedes W124 300 CE which was sold by mistake ( long story ). She is a dark grey bodykitted coupe on 17" wheels;the total opposite to what I usually like, but in this case, opposites attracted.Very distinctive looking car,and missed very much - E219WCL

You're joking, right? After 33 years driving? I could send you to sleep with the list! :D However, just some edited highlights (in no particular order):

And finally, another two-shot, and yes, again I would have loved to keep both.

My Starion everytime, even though it was a nightmare. I sold it because I lost my job.

I was speaking to workmates about loving to own a Starion. Next week I found out my mate was selling one and it was picked up and on the driveway in about three hours. :D

IFC63, how much do those X1/9's go for? I've always wanted one.

There was one of those bodykitted in red a few weeks ago on ebay.

First one:

Reason: To young, stupid and penniless. Still got the wheels though.

Second and most recent:

cbeb9943.jpg

Reason: Too much bodge work found too late.

I bought the White 825 Sterling in mid 2009. It was to be to my dream Rover 825 Sterling as my Dad had an early D-plate when I was a kid and it became the car I had always wanted.

When I bought this one, it was rather tired looking, the paint was quite matted and the engine was crying out for a service. I also found a few bodywork bodges here and there, but with my mate Brads help I got the car serviced, renewed a few parts including the middle pipe, some interior trim and got the paint shined up again with a mop,of T-cut and polish.

The old thing served me well, including through 2009s OMG SNO KAOS!!! until one day mid 2010 when I returned home from work with white smoke billowing from the exhaust. The dreaded head gasket that went, which is rare for a Honda but not unheard of. I also discovered that many parts of the engine had been cheaply bodged, crudely cut coolant pipework and so on.... The car laid outside my house looking rather forlorn everyday that went by until my mate offered me somewhere to keep it, we loaded it on the truck and off it went to his house.

Recently, same mate made me an offer, he had an identical car, same colour/spec etc... the deal was we would swap cars, and I'd take everything I wanted off my old one which meant I'd have a nice full car in better condition and a almost a full car full of spares and he'd get scrap money for the shell + a load of stuff he wanted rid of.

Whilst breaking the car for parts I rather discovered that I do get attached to my cars and that I am a rather sensitive soul

Thankfully I wasnt around to see it being taken away.

Bloody loads. Mostly though D178 OTX, Cavalier Mk2 'facelift' 1.8 SRi saloon. I also regret flogging a Vectra (yeah, I know) Supertouring which I only had for about a week or so.

E372 KRN

Fiesta 1.1 Pop Plus.

I went to the moon and back in that car. Loved every minute of its ownership. I had a gas cooker in the boot, 12v electric shower, water container, tent, air beds, sheepskin rug on the back seat, mood lighting in the back and a really nice sound system.

I used to smoke about in a 2007 Bugatti Veyron but I weighed it in when the MOT ran out. Wish I still had it now!

Citroen GS 1220 - my first Citroen.

Renault 11 TXE Electronic, with a very ranty voice synthesizer that saved me from a drink driving ban one NYE. Never had a drop before driving since.

Renault 30 TX - never actually drove it, blew a head gasket when my brother test drove it up an eight mile bank at 100 mph. Let it go back to the previous owner before I had collected it. Big mistake.

Similar story with a Dolomite Sprint - it was delivered to my dad's and he had his tame 'engineer' check it out, said it was a death trap so it went back. Was still driving around five years later. Was a £40 car in excellent nick, just needed the strut tops welding :(

None of them to be honest. To be honest there's several cars i wish Id sold sooner

Now there's a whole other thread...!

Not so much in a "they were shit" way, but as in I could have owned all sorts of different money pits in the period I only owned one

I'd take either as a valid reason to regret a purchase, really...

ABV 441R, A common or garden Volvo 244dl bought by my Father from its original owner in 1992, (still had the Hindle and Walker of Preston sticker and number plates when he got it) first car I remember him having above 1500cc, finally bought it off him in 1995 for £200 (Yeah I know  ) and kept it till 1998 when it was px'd for a G reg Peugeot 405 auto that was a complete shitbox!

Also met the former Mrs Clamp when I had the 244, having experienced the joys of courtship in a 1975 Beetle with non reclining vinyl seats the luxurious crushed velour upholstery and belting heater of the Swedish interloper made for a much more relaxed atmosphere.

Yes, I had my 244 when I met the present Mrs Ramrod in 1997... :)

Tragically, no score on that front, I'm quite the wrong shape to do any of the things I'd like to do in a car.... hardly any point in my having wipe clean seats, really.

Nothing I've had since was really better, and I still see it round town, and it still gleams and looks like brand new.

mk3 Vauxhall Astra.

Though to be honest I think most cars are far too small for that sort of thing.

Nah! Ingenuity is the mother of invention!

If after an hour or so your MOT reminder sticker hasn't fallen off due to the steamed up windows you're just not trying hard enough 8) .

You honestly regret not keeping a P38?

I wish I had the money to have kept it right. When it worked properly, the thing was sublime.

Unfortunately, that didn't happen as often as it should have.

Did you for one moment think that P38 ownership was going to be trouble free?
