The "Not seen one of these before" thread

Just perusing Ebay for stuff for the tat thread, when I found this beauty:

$(KGrHqMOKiEE3ykefpeNBOB2m8e5pQ~~_12.JPG

Appears to be a Fiat take on the Citroen Mehari, MiniMoke or the Renault 4 "Pleinaire" (sic?)

It's a Fiat Jolly, based on the original 500, and apparently, rare as rocking horse shit.

(The one above is not the one the bloke is selling however.)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1960-Fiat-500-Jol ... 3a679251ba

Didn't Fiat make another convertible 500, often seen painted up as Noddy's car?

Anyone got any more, or comments on this?

Posted

There were Jolly versions of the 600 too. I saw one in Sicily a few years ago - the woman was reversing it out of her garage as Iwas walking past - I nearly had a seizure  I'll find the pics later ...

Posted

I know these are rare bu £16 grand for a total rebuild!!!

will be interesting to see if he gets it

Those look like the same bug-eye headlamps they used on the US spec 500.

I'd never seen one of these until a few weeks ago:

I thought at first someone had just stuck a VW engine in a Hilux and added a corresponding badge to the grille. Turns out it's actually a VW Taro - a rebadged and slightly (very slightly - they changed the grille and the little window behind the doors) restyled Toyota Hilux.

Posted

There was one of those around here about five years back, took me a good long time to click on that he hadn't been fiddling with badges. I saw a brand new one the other week too, again a bit WTF

An Amarok apparently :?

On a recent episode of Chasing Classic Cars on Discovery I'm sure they sold a Fiat based Jolly for about £30k, it was bought off a guy who had half a dozen in his private collection.

In a similar vein to the Taro, I've only just become aware of these:

Bertone-Freeclimber2-1992-J.jpg

The Bertone Freeclimber 2. More than just a rebadge this time, this is essentially a Daihatsu Sportrak, but with a BMW six cylinder M40 engine.

From what I can gather the Freeclimber 1 was based on the Fourtrak, and may have included BMW based turbodiesels in the engine line-up:

From what I can gather (from the Daily Express World Car Guide 1994), these were intended to be imported to the UK. Did any make it here, I wonder?

HOLY THREAD RESURRECTION BATMAN!!!

Never knew about these; I'm sure some of you Reno-Anoraks will have, while you Reno-Pervs are going to love this.....

2708831.jpg

An ordinary R6? Nope, it's a SINPAR 4x4 as used by the military apparently. £5345 and it's in Budapest.

Four-wheel-drive teamed with skinny little cross-ply tyres seems to make no sense whatsoever! I therefore declare it fabulous and want one immediately. As do I want a supercharger for my KV6.

There were Sinpar versions of the R4 and R6. Both proper rare now. Theres a chap on the South coast with a Sinpar R4 though, its very capable off road - he uses it for going shooting in.

I knew about the R4, didn't occur to me that the R6 would be fitted with the same gear - it's obviously really....would gladly have either....

This may be common knowledge on here, but I only just discovered them

Looks like a BMC J4, doesn't it? its not-its a spanish built Pegaso J4. Built under license, maybe?

funky "modernised" (ie, plastic grille and different headlights) version too.

I would love to get hold of one of these. a rust free J4 and then do it in royal mail livery

I remember reading about the Spectre when it was new. It's certainly interesting.. It looks like a cheap kit car though. I'd still have it in my eccentric millionaire dream world though. In the real world I'd sooner spend my pounds on a TVR Cerbera or a 97ish Marcos Mantis

Yup, the Noddy Fiat was the Gamini - heres a linky to one that was recently for sale :

And quite right - rarer than rockin horse poo!

I know where one of these lives, on a country lane on the northern fringe of Greater Madchester. The owner is a fan of the "smaller" classic car (he had an ex-Met Police Mk 2 Metro a few years back  , and always has a couple of Minis kicking about in his stables), and he has a covered vehicle transporter based on a Ducato or similar which is used professionally (he took a neighbour's Bugatti away then returned it some weeks later, a couple of years ago).

Never spoken to him, but I always give him a toot if I see him - and get a cheery wave back 8) !

I've seen one of those Spectre things at a country pile on the Wirral.

Looked kinda funky, but very DIY in bits. Whoever paid the asking price for one new must have been certifiable.

A few I spotted at Goodwood FoS a couple of years ago

How about the 1957 Fiat 600 Jolly Marbella..?

Possibly my favourite car of all time, the Citroen SM Opera by Henri Chapron. One of two, and something I never thought I'd see

Another favourite, the 1954 Maserati A6GCS Berlinetta

It appears to be EXTRA shit.

Is the Sceptre R42 the thing that originally had Orion rear lights?

I remember seeing it at a motor show in the olden days, and my first thought was that it meant you could fit Mk 4 "Cortina 80" rear lights if you wanted.....

BMW 200c. Proof they could make fuck ugly cars long before the 1 series was but a glint in their eye

I saw this yesterday afternoon. It's a 1955 Lester-MG and it belongs to a chap who lives a couple of streets away, which was a nice surprise.

Whilst I was 'aware' of Harry Lester and his MG Specials, I had never seen this particular car before - They all look completely different. This is the last of 9 that were built from 1949 and the owner was just bringing it out of hibernation ahead of this weekend's Prescott Hillclimb which he'll be attending.

A pal of mine has a Jeffery. It's a seriously handy bit of kit, but looks dreadful (in a good way). Function over form and why not?

They all end up looking like Sevens because how different can you make a super-basic bodywork look? Under the skin, the Jeffery has rather fine, rose-jointed suspension so even with standard Minor mechanicals, they corner exceedingly well.

I like that, but mostly for the name. telling people you have a Jeffery is almost as good as telling them you have a Cedric.

Hey, that's the Snapper TR3! I love that car. Microplas Mistral bodyshell on a Triumph TR3 chassis/ running gear. Built by a chap called Anthony Snapper over in Worthing in the '60s and was a local Sussex car for many years (somebody I know took some photos of it parked in Brighton in the late '70s). The rear end has been modified a fair bit from the original Mistral and looks all the better for it I reckon.

I must say it's looking a little unhealthy since the last time I saw it, but it was running regularly up until quite recently and should be an easy fix to get back on the road. If I had £11,000 I'd be on my down there now....

I saw one of those with a Luxembourg plate on the Konigsallee in Dusseldorf (outside what used to be C&A ironically enough) in about 1988. A really nice thing and I suspect it was the very same car despite the Spanish plate in those photos.
