Bored with my car

I keep saying this but I really have to get rid of the Micra. Its boring me titless.

Small and fast?

Large and chunky?

Luxobarge?

I really dont know what I want :?

Faster than the Micra

More comfortable than the Micra

Not as rust prone as the Micra.

I think thats it.

I had the same itchy feet with my Micra, apart from mine made the decision for me by shitting its waterpump and cooking the engine.

Im now rocking around in a '89 Prelude and its fappin' ace. Granted its not quite as good on juice (although I never thought the K10 was that good) but its quieter, smoother, more comfortable (seats and ride quality) quicker, its got a bigger boot so some modicum of practicality and pop-up lights which make letting people out of side-streets or through gaps in traffic a bit of an event.

Not saying thats what you should get, as I can totally see how its not for everyone (its quite low even at standard height, so I kind of have to roll out sometimes...) but I can see now just how grim a k10 micra was. Competent. but grim.

Spending some time with Google has given me (so far) this list:

Fiesta XR2 (mk2)

Fiesta XR2i/Si (Mk3)

Fiesta Zetec S (mk4)

Fiesta Zetec SE (mk5)

Shitroen Saxo VTS

Pugger 106 GTi

Pugger 106 XS

Clio RS

Micra K12 160SR

Polo Mk3F GTi

Anything with a 90 or 110 BHP DW10 donkey that can be chipped.

Night shifts - fricking GR9 for mad ideas and talking to myself.

So your looking at hot-hatchs...

Firstly, there was no hot mk4 fiesta (they're the droopy looking ones) The zetecS came in on the mk5.

Any hot fiesta is pretty good, they handle alright and go well. Parts can be got almost anywhere aswell. Usually got quite high insurance though Ive found.

Saxo/106's are a good shout. They seem to be coming out of the Chav/numpty stage and becoming genuinely cheap, quick cars, if you can find a un-messed-with one. Personally I find the 106 more attractive.

I know nothing of K12 micras (im assuming they're the ugly-as last shape ones)

6n Polos are nice places to be. I know some had problems with the bulkhead and pedalbox, something to do with stress cracks.

Can be expensive to buy due to 'dubbers' and VW dealership prices can be eyewatering for parts. Although GSF/EuroCarParts and Ebay can be the answer.

Get yourself a test drive in a Mk4 Fiesta 1.25, they are much quicker then people give them credit for, both my mums and sisters ones went like shit of a stick, try and get a Si or Ghia spec if you like things like electric windows and central locking.

Someone my wife works with was selling their R reg 1.25 Ghia recently that they had from new with only 38k for £800, i would have been tempted myself if we hadnt just bought the Escort.

Vauxhall Cors... oh wait.

Fiesta 1.1 (carb) 3 door hatchback sounds like the best car for you. Ideally about a 1992 model in blue with no door mirror.

kei ... 660cc turbo, got to have a turbo.

If I'm sensible on a run I get 50mpg+ around town and general sillyness 40mpg. Comfy seats, a/c, electric windows/mirrors, but they do rust a bit.

Punto hgt? They seem to be dirt cheap now. Or whatever that sporty hatch hirst was flogging. Baleno gsr?

Valencia Donkey? I'd rather walk.

Saxo VTR? Grp 7 insurance, pretty good on juice and GR8 FUN ON BACK ROADS N THAT. They don't rust much, (not terminally anyway) and are comfortable enough really.

My mate bought a very tidy un dicked about with 51 plate one (one of them two tone silver and grey ones) with about 70k miles and plenty of test for £800. Lovely car.

We've dicked about with it now but only to remove the shitty aftermarket immobiliser and also remove 40mm from the ride height.

I've had loads of 106/saxos and really rate them. Saxo VTR is about the best for price/insurance/economy/chance of getting a not fucked one if you want something a bit sporty. VTS is same car but with 25 more bhp, but they aren't as good on juice and the early ones never idle properly and can misfire terribly unless they have just had a recon ECU and coilpack on them which is a £300 hit. All the second hand stuff is either fucked already (OE coilpacks break down internally and spike the ECU) or not far off.

The VTRs use a more reliable setup.

106s are a nicer looking car, but they seem to hold a bit of a price premium, and there is no real alternative to the VTR in the series 2 cars.

S1 106 XSis are cracking, but harder to find a goodun and they tend to be rustyer. Slightly less refined than the saxo, but not much. 1.4 ones are revvy things and go well but need winding up. 1600s are a bit easier to drive

I'd never heard of this, but a quick search on ebay shows it to be like the cool little Colts.

I'm currently running around in a Mk2 XR2, and as lovely as it is, they aren't a "comfortable" car. Big bundle of fun, though, even before you open the second choke, and they get planty looks now there aren't many standard ones left (mines bone stock, right down to the factory steels and wheeltrims!)

Thing is, I feel the same about this as you do about the Micra. I just can't take to it. It's a great car, and does everything I need, maybe I should have waited and gone to see the Corrado I had my eye on..... Anyway, you don't want this Fez, do you?

Metro GTa 8v (R6). 75BHP as standard, but feel like more, handle well, shite points for Hydragas. Mine was carbed and cammed up, a little rocket.

Metro GTi 16v (R6) 95 or 103 BHP, rest as above. 95 BHP model (triangular air filter) is closed deck block.

Talbot Samba 1.4 litre on twin carbs. Comfy, fun and different.

I've always wanted a spin in a Proton Satria. I’ve always liked the look of these. Our local Chinese chippy had a GTi as a delivery vehicle for about four years!

I had an 'S' plate Corsa 1.6 Sport and thought it was a cracking little motor. Never missed a beat in the two years I had it and from my experience, certainly built better than the Corsa C. Very brisk and no where near as ‘in your face’ as the earlier GSi models. A much underrated supermini in this guise and happily took me on a 1200 mile tour of Scotland in decent comfort considering. Leccy widows, heated mirrors as standard as well as air con from 1999 onwards. Sadly, finding an un-chavved example these days is near enough zero. Mind you after saying that, here’s a decent standard one on eBay at the moment.

Seconded on the mk4 Fiesta 1.25. A very, very sweet little motor and indeed, brisker than some may think. Will quite happily cruise at ‘naughty’ speeds on motorways. It feels flimsier than the Corsa B in my opinion, then you have the rot most seem to suffer these days but still one of the better handling front wheel drive cars out there that I’ve driven.

Even if that was next door to you it would still be £995 overpriced.

I absolutely *HEART* these - but don't get one if your commute is in heavy traffic. The lumpy idle, heavyish clutch and drivetrain shunt will piss you off within a week.

If on the otherhand, there are twisty backroads........

Oh I agree, Golden Hill are not cheap to buy from, plus their write ups smack of old style car dealer in sheepskin coats.

Nah seriously, check out the MK4 Fiesta LankyTim's selling on here.

I hate Xsaras. They're everything a Citroen shouldn't be. Dull and rather pointless - just a Peugeot 306 with all of the glamour removed.

I vote late 80s/early 90s Honda Civic. Insane fun yet great on fuel. They can rot though, but I'm starting to think that 'modern cars don't rot' is a load of rubbish anyway. Saw a Mk3 Golf today and I could see straight through the sills!
