Well, to be fair it was 15 years and 90'000 miles old. Not bad going even back then.

Thousands and thousands of old cars were dropped whole into this MoFo.

And it's gone, just like that. Nothing of it remains. Where is the steel from it now, 41 years on?

A 2CV gets the Swan Vestas trick. But how were they there as it was burning? I reckon they owned it and torched it for the pics.

Spring 1975, and post oil crisis, a tatty 1965 S Type manual is worth fuck all, and dumped.

The Youth of 1972 was driving some real old shit. This Minor 1000 (around 1957-60) wasn't far behind Mrs Barnett's splittie.

Alan Trueman was a hero though - tidy Z Magnette. It didn't survive the seventies though. :-(

"It's got a flighty look and I will never be as fond of it" - marvellous, the kind of turn of phrase my dear old nan used to have :D

The lament of the Minor puts me in mind of the "Secret Life of Machines" episode on cars - Mk2 Escort fans look away from 4 minutes in. Plus bonus rolling 100A content:

Has there ever been a rougher Anglia than this?

IMG_0008.jpg

This what DRIVE bought for £65. A shagged 1957 A55 Mk11. It was worth £30 at most....my Mum's Mini was £45 in 1972 and it was much better than this turd.

Felicity Underhill is now 58, and probably a Grandmother.

F-u-c-k-i-n-g H-e-l-l !!!

How did that survive?????

That has to be a loigbook job - someone saw the reg in the mag, rang up DVLA (No Boyo, it's not been taxed since 1976, isn't it?) and applied for the 'book.

So did the mag do a super-resto on it, ensuring it's survival?

Any more of that dissapearing 2CV article? I'm intrigued!

Even if the Anglia were restored in 1972 when the article was published, it would have been rusted out again in the early eighties. All I can assume is that the geezer kept it out of sentiment and restored it at a later date.

The 2CV was burnt out late 1974/early '75. Don't know what year it is, but it's between March 1963 (introduction of windows in rear quarters) and December 1965 (end of the suicide front doors).....so it was pretty old.

Bloody hell, I actually remember this mag! Well I remember the blue Cambridge, and the teens' cars are ringing bells... OK, so the Anglia survives; do any of the others? And is anyone else interested in catching up with the people now? It's been 40 years, they must have stories to tell...

I checked all the cars - all apart from the Ford Angular are dead with no record at DeVeeLA. I facebooked them all - no luck. Trouble is, they're all giffers now. Some of them are 60+. The young bird with her A35 is (was) cute though.

Do a FB seach for Felicity Underhill..... The picture is intriguing.

I remember the magazine, my uncle had it and I used to read it when I went round to his house. I would have sworn the car that got burnt out was a Minor traveller, tho'... funny how your mind plays tricks.

Posted

I remember in another issue they rebuilt a Mini estate using the front half of an old saloon, as a "research" feature; could it be done and if so, how? Apart from painting it beige they made what I thought was a pretty good job too, but at the end of the article said the car was destroyed on safety grounds.

It would have burned well!

Drive did two other features that spring to mind.

One was 'The Austin Seven', the 1962 - 71 life story of a red Austin Mini Estate and the 6 people who owned it. That one didn't make it onto the DVLA computer. 643WBH iirc.

Then there was an article about rebuilt write offs and a 'comic strip' style story of a guy going for a drive in his brand new Avenger, crashing it and the insurance company selling it to a dodgy salvage broker.

I'll try and dig these out.

I remember that red Mini... :D One woman hated it, I think she was the one who had the roof sprayed black "to make it look a bit sporty."

Also from FR.

"I registered on here ages ago, then forgot and never checked anything and changed my email address so for all I know could have been contacted by loads of thrilling people from my past. I'm still working in education in a variety of ways with a pretty good work life balance but sadly no pension scheme. So will be still at it till I drop. I've got 4 children (17-27) but no grandchildren yet and no current partner."

Would she be pissed off though?

Aah bollocks, DO IT!! :D

Who could have imagined in 1972 that 39 years later, the pics would be here....?

Invitation sent. :D

I wondered if any of these guys and girls would even remember it, but I can think back to 1972. My first Lego set, my Dad buying a Mini 1275GT and watching Top of the Pops - all aged 5.

I can recall quite clearly watching The Strawbs playing 'Part of the Union' on TOTP. Christ, it was a long time ago.......

I remember that one - it was to illustrate the dangers of 'cut and shut' salvage jobs.

My grandparents had loads of these during the 1970s, I remember an article about motorcycle safety that said more motorcycle dispatch riders were killed in the second world war in bike accidents than combat!

there are two Felicity Underhill's showing in the UK - I'd reckon there's a good chance that's the right one - nice boobs for 58!
