Diary of a Trainee Shiteist

Finally got these photos off the phone so many apologies for shiteness of shots...

Alongside my rotten Cavalier SRi and the two Leyland Nationals my shite fleet recently expanded to include this which was a bit of a bargain. I hope. I think I've rumbled about it previously, but it should hopefully (depending on the amount of welding required/finding people who know more about them/people who just know better) make a triumphant return the road in the near to distant future. Last on the road in 1997, 20k on the clock, plenty of grot but more or less everything seems to be available and it's still got it's original wheeltrims and dealer plates. I suspect that's all that's going for it right enough, but heyho... with a bit of luck I'll have somewhere to put it shortly and take it from there.

Looks crunchy!!!

I expect it will be, but for fifty quid I can't really argue cos it'll probably still be worth that in bits to someone else... it was another "here, I've got this thing in my bloody garage I'm wanting shot of, you interested... ?"

Tontops, that may all be true, but stop trying to put the poor lad off! Look, he's taken a chance to try and save an old car, rather than just sign on the dotted to make bankers and Koreans rich. This is the actual "green" option, proper recycling! Give him a bit of positive encouragement, FFS! (I feel like Oddball in Kelly's Heroes here... )

I had three (count 'em) of the old model 500, the one that preceded the 126, and trust me, around town they are a hoot! If you can weld, cms, then you are going to have such a laugh. Hundreds of mpg (if Brussels will still allow us miles and gallons); easy parking; and I suspect yours may even be the hatchback, built in sunny Poland. It's almost free motoring, enjoy, I'm with you all the way.*

*As long as I don't have to fly up there from Cyprus and actually put hand to spanner, I have enough of that to do here.

Cheers Eddy!

I won't take offence tontops, I know what these things can be like, my nervousness stems from only really knowing Leyland and Gardner engines to any degree and the fact that I fear my 6ft 2in frame'll find it difficult to squeeze into the ikkle Fiat with any regularity

I know several men of your height who deliberately choose tiny cars: Mini, 500, Fiesta Mk1, Polo, etc etc... so don't worry about that, the seat will adjust. Everything else about this car will seem like a Corgi model if you spend all day under buses and trucks!

Good luck CMS! I love these little cars. YS = Dundee registration?

Glasgow area, not sure which Hamilton Brothers branch supplied it new though - I suspect somewhere in East Kilbride as that's the area it still more or less lurks in.

I'm new around here, and the Fiat's delicious and all, but YOU OWN TWO LEYLAND NATIONALS?!?!!!!! (1)

Good luck with the 126 chap, it'll be a great save if you can pull off the resto.

I hope the front panel's not too bad, they're full of brackets and stiffeners.

I look forward to finding out... it's also hopefully going to allow me to learn to weld things which aren't a complete mess, if there is any metal left to weld to.

Cheers for the other words of confidence and photos of crumbly things and sunroofs and water, when I get it dragged out of that hidey hole I'll update further... probably going to be a few more big stuff posts as well, currently working on readying PIL 7013 for test and after than SHH 389X'll be due...

An unenviable task..but good on ya fer undertaking such a project..the resto thread will be a good read..and the buses are well cool...cheers..RAB

Well, at least if it starts raining, you can just move the Fiat onto one of the buses to keep dry. Sorted!

Can't wait to see a pohot of 126 and National. Rear engined might against rear engined mouse!

Posted

I've fancied a South Yorkshire Transport liveried National for some time. Good work :)

This is fantastic.

Is it me or has this forum suddenly come good all over again. So much proper shite saving type activity going on...

Photos of buses

Oooh. Two MkIIs and a MkI, all without roof pods. I'm 29 and that's made me all nostalgic for the my school bus days. I can still hear that 690s offbeat idle in one of Eastern Nationals MJN registered machines.

Myself and 3 mates skived off college one dull afternoon in 1993 (16 or 17 at the time :D ) and bought one of these from a scrapyard with the sole intention of thrashing the bejesus out the little bugger at a nearby derelict brickworks. It was in the yard minus battery, bootlid and rear wheels. We got a pair of wheels from a dead Panda which gave it an amusing rake and the first battery that would fit and then kicked its arse until the already slipping clutch gave out.

Its the first car I ever got airbourne, first car I nose dived into the ground and first and only car I nearly crashed onto a working railway line.... 8)

Look forward to some progress pics cms206

So, as progress crawls on with the Fiat, a call from fellow autoshiter rml245 has seen me become proud owner of approximately one Volvoweight of dark grey 740GLE. It's not at all clever looking and lasted three whole days before I managed to break it.

It's a 2.3 with ZF slushbox gearchanging method, and will hopefully be running properly again tomorrow now the nice man with the orange van has tapped various parts of the engine bay with a hammer and declared the coil to be "fucked".

More photos tomorrow, probably, as it's now been recovered to my work...

You broke a 740?

The Volvo has stayed resolutely unbroken in the eight years and 70,000 miles it's been with me, apart from the dash gauges, which despite my best efforts have never worked properly :(

Have you tried tightening all the screws on the back of the cluster? I cured my intermittent speedo by doing that.

Yes; not sure if I should be proud or not... appears the coil has gone and fried itself causing intermittent bouts of running, normally lasting no more than 20 seconds. Purchased new one today which is the wrong one, new part should be here on Monday to restore it's rightful place as the rattiest car in the street. Looking forward to it, 24mpg has never been so comfortable...
