Cars You Never Knew They Made (until some time later...)

Recommended Posts

Over the last couple of years I've come across a few cars (well, actually versions of cars) that I didn't realise existed.

Example:

Anglia Estate

Skoda Fabia Saloon

Renault Clio Estate

Any more?

Crap, dunno what happened to the Clio link, let me try again....

Wait, you've never seen an Anglia estate before?? :? ??

Then you may quite literally SHIT YOURSELF when you see this then - Anglia hatchback!

There are a couple of cars I didn't know about that I found recently, i'll get some pics together tomorrow. Mustard mitt I've not seen that Clio estate before either.

Seat 1200 Sport - only found this one the other day, it pretty much ticks all the boxes for me - obscure 70s euro coupe to the max

Make a nice stablemate for a Renner 15, no?

Seat have pretty much cornered the market in 'WTF?' moments for me actually, I didn't know about these till pretty recently..

And that's without taking into account some of the super low volume coachbuilt stuff too, like this (which might be one of the most handsome cars i've ever seen)

I saw a Clio Estate the other day and thought it was quite a good idea. There should me more small estates.

I'd love something Clio sized, Estate, but with something mental like a 3.5 V6 and RWD.

Also, while we're on about stuff that we never knew existed. Cool small cars.

I wonder if they'd do Hirst a Stanza?

That made me proper LOL everywhere. Were they joking when they made that? I love it. 8)

I remember about 7 years ago in Spain coming round a corner and suddenly coming face to face with a Renault 7 parked under a tree. Wasn't ever aware of its existence til that moment, and what a moment it was.

Ford Capri, not the one you're thinking of

For me it has to be the Nissan Micra Box (K11 estate)

I am consumed with wantage for one of these.

About 75% of all the stuff made by the Rootes Group.

Fo some reason they were very thin on the ground 'when I were a lad', OK so you would get the occasional Hunter, Avenger or Imp, but the earlier Minxes, Sceptres, Vogues etc didn't register with me until much later.

Rover 800 coupe. Never knew they'd made them and was fascinated when I saw one. I think they look quite classy for a 'modern' Rover as it goes.

Posted

Focus Saloon.... not the Mk1, they were everywhere but the latest (or latest-1) shape. Look like a mini prev-gen Mondeo at the back, seen maybe 2 in evAr.

Lancia Prisma.

I've never seen one on the road, and only learned of its existence from Daily Express World Car Guides that I was flicking through about ten years ago.

I'm guessing it was phenomenally unsuccessful in the UK.

I thought some muppet had just changed the badges, but no they do exist

Have you seen them in NZ?

Yes, never heard of them before I came here

Anyone else seeing this...?

Posted

Yup, I can see the Daf/Volvoness now :)

I never knew Volvo made a 2-door 700 until not long back.

Posted Image

I'm sure the 780 would have been a bigger seller had they offered it to the UK market.... and with a decent engine instead of the V6

They were fitted with the VW LT 2.4 6-pot turbo diesel too.

ohhhh i got one of those, the engine not the volvo, funny enough still in my LT

Those 2dr 700s are really handsome motors. Not sure who styled them but I know it was a Bertone job. I like all 2dr post-Amazon Ovlovs actually, I dont think i'd ever seen one before I went to America when I was 15, and they were bloody everywhere. Very confusing.

SL will probably be along with one of the 2 or so uk versions that have been spotted.

Shouldn't this apply only to UK-market cars? Obviously you're not going to be aware of foreign oddities!

One car I wasn't aware of until recently was the Granada Scorpio estate - they didn't sell many.

That was released about same time as the hatch, not a big seller in the UK, only ever seen two in the past five years.

I think most '70s and '80s Italian cars, especially the medium/large saloons etc have totally fallen off my radar. Even when I see one now I cannot really recall seeing them when they were newish.

Agreed!

Scorpio Estate, my mate had one after his 940. He fell headlong for the 2.9V6, automatic, leather interior etc etc (he's had so many Granadas even I've lost count, and we had our first ones together in 1985!). The Ford's engine electronics died, he scrapped it and bought a 740 estate instead, which he still has, and loves.

Astra Mk1 saloon.

To be fair, they're hard to spot, as they are almost identical to the hatches unless you look closely. The giveaway is the two small plastic blocks underneath the rear window.

This had to be a hard sell for a car salesman when a virtually identical hatchback was also available.
