What's the first car you remember your family owning?

A 1979 silver Mk2 Escort Ghia. Main memories: the ghia badges; sliding round the back seat (three girls, two seatbelts); the headlining... it was a perforated type affair but a big splodge-shaped area of the holes above the rear seat were filled in by my sister's icecream and it never came out.

That was briefly replaced by a Peugeot 304 estate and then there was an AX new in 1989. I think they got it wrong though and supplied a 4 speed when Ma and Pa ordered a 5 speed so we got a Gold GSA as a courtesy car while it was sorted.

The thing I can remember about it was the way the roof overhung the back window, and the little chrome extractor vents in the overhang... I would have been 4 or 5 at the time I recon.

Memories, eh!

Yes well know area to rust out up there. I have a high level third brake light inside the centre vent, it cannot be seen until the brake is applied and then it reflects in the rear screen - well it will do if ever I get around to connecting the bloody thing up that is.

Here's some from the Harper family album for you to enjoy;

The first car i remember having was a grey 105e ford anglia LRP 889E. I loved that car and actuly cried when it was traded in around 1975 for a yellow escort 1300xl SHG966K which we seemed to go everywhere in. We then got a M reg Humber Sceptre in metalic lilac/light purple. The colour was amazing and ive never seen another the same before or since. Must have been a eyecatcher as someone nicked it after about 3 months and it was never seen again. WNA???M was the number. We then got a nordic blue escort 1300L 2 door MWU471V which i learnd to drive in. One car i do have very fond memories of was my uncles morris marina 1.3 in black tulip which was a dark purple. He got it brand new in 71 or 72. I remenber most of the reg ENV???K. I would love to find out what happend to them. The marina in particullar .Oh my dad now drives a modern S type.

My earliest memories are of the white Fiesta Mk1 that we had when my brother was born in 82. I just remember the black and white check-patterned seats. Also a beige Escort 1.1 APG ***Y. Briefly we had a Volvo 340/360 - I can't recall why we didn't have it long. Maybe it was a loan car. I just remember sitting in it and trying to find out how to work the headlamp wipers...

Memories from 85/86 include being in our blue Escort 1.3 B528 JPB, parked in our road, when it started to roll away, and mum running up and trying to stop it and her feet being dragged along the road. Also Dad thinking it was a good idea to reverse it down the steep drive so we could load our holiday gear more easily.... but then it wouldn't start because there wasn't enough petrol in the tank to start at that angle and we had to be towed up the drive by a recovery truck  .

A Citroen Ami 8 would have been about 1973 -

we would drive from home - Inverness to my grandfather's - Bournemouth - on a fairly frequent basis

dad loved it

 In one go? How long did that take?

I'd be put to bed on the back seat with my sister at 6.00pm and we would typically arrive in Bournemouth at about lunchtime on the following day!

that was down the old A9 as well!

two cars on the drive then.

Renault Dauphine Ondine Gordini (bronze/gold colour) and 4CV '750' (dark blue).

Dauphine was replaced by an R10 (dark green) and the the 4CV was replaced by another 4CV but a red one.

XR3i With awful stripes down it some 15 years ago. The other kids loved it though when I got picked up from school!

My folks had a white Renault 14 when I was born. Had lovely red interior and a cool switch on the dashboard that could turn the moon on and off (or so my dad had me believe, it seemed to work though!!)

Was bought new and scrapped by us a few years later when it had rusted to nothing. All that survives is the rear number plate which is hanging up in my shed and the spare wheel which is acting as a bumper in my mum's garage.

Dad had a V8 Ford Pilot before the CA but can't honestly say I remember the Ford

The first car I have recollections of was my dad's Mk1 Capri 1300. It was red and on a G reg. This got traded in for a Capri 3000E in light blue but I recall him having the bonnet sprayed mat black. We went to Scotland on holiday in that car and I was just saying to wifey the other day as I was securely strapping my two daughters into their car seats that my sister and I (aged 5 and 2) were just plonked in the back seat of the Capri back then,no belts, safety seats etc. and off to Jockoland we went!

I was born in Poland in the mid 1970s.

The first car I've ever been in was my grandad's two stroke Trabant, similar to:

Followed by a Polski Fiat 126p, same as this one, down to the colour and wheels:

My dad's first car was a sandy coloured FSO 1500, a bit like this one:

Bet you're all jealous now!

Another Avenger for me, this one to be precise:

It replaced a 2dr Mk1 Escort I think, and I believe was the first brand new car my dad bought. It’s certainly the first car I can recall.

I think my memories of it are exaggerated by it remaining in the village until 1985 or so, after it was traded-in against an Allegro in 1974. I regularly used to see it, but after being well cared-for by the next owners (Mr & Mrs Tricker) it then went to a young lad called Fraser Green. It gradually went downhill then languished in the corner of a council flats car park where I used to see it every day on my paper round before it eventually disappeared (I would guess to the nearby scrapyard down at Assington).

Proper shite there Peter. I always had soft spot for theose Polski/FSO things.

The first car I remember was a 76 Escort mark 2 in midnight blue. 2 door with kph instruments running a tuned 1600 crossflow built by my Uncle and his mate Andy. Chopped in, at a profit, for a new FC Viva. Which was shitter than a shit thing covered in shit.

You got a seat? Bloody luxury!

People used to buy estate cars and large hatchbacks so they could put surplus children in the boot.

Indeed. Try being cramped up in the boot of an Austin Maxi (OFO 9M) with a large, drooling dog and a shitload of holiday gear on a very long journey to Scotland.

coming from a family of shite car owners the earliest cars i remember when i was about 2 or 3,are my dads S reg Austin Princess that gave way to a mk5 Cortina an mums Y reg Austin Maestro which she loved dearly until dad bought her a Metro VDP(B784DCA) that was so well loved she kept it for 10 yrs until it fell apart then cried when my dad swapped it for a corsa! now im 23 an have a strong likeing for crappy old cars, mum an dad both have modern stuff now but still enjoy the nostalgia my cars provide

I remember in the mid '70s sitting in the back of my mums blue Vauxhall Viva when it was hit up the arse at some speed. I fell off the seat, but I was fine as I'd heard the screech of tyres and turned to look as the Marina behind locked up the fronts before hitting the Viva.

No childseat or seatbelt malarky in the back in those days.

Bugger all up with me. I was rather amused by the truly stoned face of the Marina driver. I was dying to laugh, so I said nothing as mum was furious at the guy and I realised that laughing might not be the best idea. I was probably four or five at the time, so I could spot furious mum from a million miles away. She thought I'd been hurt because I "looked confused" so she swapped insurance details with Cheech Marina and rushed me straight to my dads garage. (Although I have to state not to have parts replaced..).

I remember being in my dads office and mum is describing a the accident from the point of view of someone who didn't know exactly what had happened, or exactly what type of car had hit it (she had the drivers details, reg and contact number on a bit of paper) and she was saying that I'd not spoken since it happened and should I go to hospital and get checked over? Dad sits me down and says "Are you alright, what happened?" so I described exactly what happened, the Marina, the full scene. Nobody else had asked me.

Dad near pissed himself laughing. Mum was somewhat furious..

First memory of our cars was BCF213C, a Minor (still exists somewhere) and a damask red Triumph 1300. Old man has a pic of us washing it somewhere - I'll dig it out - exactly the same period as Marshall judging by the hair and clothes (and stance!)

I remember moving from Bury St Eds to Peterborough in 1975 in a red Marina 1.8 estate, to be replaced quickly by a Triumph 2000. It is the Minor I remember most of all though.

I also recall sitting in the middle of the back seat of a very early Rover SD1 (uncle had a BL dealership), and said uncle stomping on the brakes sending an obviously unbelted 4 year old between the front seats and up the central console to the gear shifter with enough force to put it in park - the resulting screeching to a halt sending me somersaulting (my head as a pivot) until my heels hit the windscreen. I ended up a crumpled heap in the passenger footwell. Everyone laughing except my mother who gave me a right bollocking.

Don't think I've replied on this thread yet... I are only TEH YUNGZ so I don't remember back years ago, but my dad was an autoshitest before his time (like all dads were), but I'm reliably informed that the car we had when I was born was a gold Starlet with a brown vinyl roof, but it was traded in for a two-tone blue & silver Chevette (EGG 48X) before I got out the hospital. It lasted a couple of years, was chopped in for a beige A-reg Metro HLS, which was in turn traded in for a C-reg Montego 1.3HL? Then it all went downhill; a Proton 1.3GLS (H346 XDS), a J-reg Nova 1.2 Luxe saloon (J281 XUE rings a bell but I don't think thats right... J281 anyway!), a grey Sierra hatchback (G588 PNS) before becoming proud owner of brand new Ford Escort Finesse T160 JGD, a car I'd really like to get my hands on - it's still taxed, but none of the others are. Spotted it a few months ago in Kirkintilloch still wearing it's original Clanford dealer numberplates... where are you now?!

My mum had a 1962 Singer gazelle, from 1964 to about 1982. 8265SP, this was followed by an Aqua Starmist Viva HB UTJ745H, then a Datsun 100A-F11-CSX730S.

At the same time my brother had a Riley RME, my sister a Datsun 120Y coupe, HSN68N, and my other sister a Datsun 120Y 4-door in metallic brown.

Here's me in the Gazelle in about 1976ish?

First car was a maroon 1965 Austin Mini when it was 18 months old. Then a blue and white 1966 Morris Mini Cooper and then a white 1275GT on a J. Mum's first car was a red and white 1960 Mini with Cosmic wheels, Austin 1100 engine, madadash and all the usual seventies Mini accessories. 1974 saw a new Mexico on the drive and the white 1275GT went to Mother. 1977 and the Mex was chopped for a Capri 2000S and the 1275GT was traded for a new Polo L in 1978.

Needless to say, none of them still exist and none of my folks cars from the 1980's made it either. :(

I strongly remember sitting in the back of our Morris A60 van, then our Anglia van, on a regular basis! The Anglia van (DWM 242C) left us in about 1969, and since then I've mostly had actual seats...

A 1966 blue Vauxhall Viva. Used to go to Cornwall in it sat on a cushion on the back seat. No seatbelts or anything. I remember them having it from about 1974.

Ooh look, this one's got my initials!

Apparently they had a 1962 Herald before it, but the lights kept falling out.

Something akin to this:

... but with added rust, and an aroma of hot vinyl seats, engine oil and general decay. In my memories it broke down alot and also had an exhaust constructed entirely of putty and pop cans.

Heh, so, you'll know all about just how hot the big bolts that hold the front seatbelt buckles in those can get...

When I arrived the old fella had an 18mth old A35.

After that fell aprt we didn't have a car for a while

A Raleigh Wisp was followed by a Honda 90 :cry::cry::cry:

Then came a Reliant Regal Supervan III - LVL 937J. Guess what it WASN'T yellow. It didn't have windows in when he bought it. To do so he also had to pay purchase tax as it was now considered a passenger vehicle (or something like that).

Then a Renault 12 (H plate) follwed by a Renault 18TL (T) then a f**** w** Montego diesel est :oops::oops::oops::oops::oops::oops::oops::oops::oops::oops:

Then a Rover 825SLD and now a Pug 306 est.
