Parking a car with no reg plates on the road - legal?

Can a car be legally parked on the road without number plates? The car is taxed, insured and MoT'd.

If not, why not?

Cheers guys.

PS: Thank god it's Friday!!!!!!

I'm no lawyer but I'm pretty sure it's illegal, same as not displaying a tax disc.

PS: Damn right!! 8)

Can't you print out some temporary number plates on the computer and stick them in the windows or something? Not strictly legal, but better than no plates at all I'd've thought.

It wouldn't pass an MOT test with no plates would it? And therefore if seen by the authorities it would be deemed unroadworthy? Maybe?

I very highly recommend this guy on ebay, I've bought a few sets of him recently and they are top notch, cheapest price on the net, Next day delivery (Although you might not get them until Tuesday now due to bank holiday weekend) and there's no need for giving all your details like there is in Halfords (Which are £12.99 each iirc).

The story is that my next door neighbour has gone on holiday to the States for two weeks and left me looking after his house. I noticed this morning that someone had stolen both number plates off his Boxster S. I reported the theft to the rozzers who said that the car must be taken off the road!

That's just daft!, I'd personally order the plates above, and just hope no-one sticks a fine on the car meanwhile then claim the £7.99 back of the neighbour when he gets home as he'll need some plates anyway.

Maybe stick a note just saying the plates have been reported to the police in case a jobs worth copper takes a fancy to it?.

You'll have Wazza and Bonehead from the Interceptors coming round to destroy the car. Any excuse for the VOSA, Traffic Warden, Traffic Police, etc to ticket it!

I love that! I hope they also set the wheels in motion to try and apprehend the actual, factual criminals here, put out an 'APB' (or whatever it's called) to look out for a car now sporting those plates etc. Or perhaps it's just easier to come round and slap a fine on the victim of this crime?

fuckin typical attitude from the authorishites - I had a scooter stolen in London 7 years back - kids trashed the hell out of it and abandoned it - I got a call from the police telling me that I had illegally parked it on a pavement 7 miles away and had an hour to move it or I would get a £200 fine - this the same officer who I had reported the theft to - I kicked up merry hell with the victims support unit and plod wound his neck in - tossers - missing the point entirely!

Interesting one.

You can MOT a plateless car-done it several times, when I've imported a'foreign'without plates.

You can therefore drive one, legally(insured on VIN) to a prebooked MOT station -if needs be,at the far end of the country...

But parked? Doubtful.

However- a large notice on the screens explaining would convince a Magistrate -(take a pic) should a plastic bobby be daft enough to try..

Reckon you're probably 'safe' till tuesday....

I once had the plates nicked from my Volvo when in Solihull, they said it was fine to drive it back to Stoke without any, just aslong as I got some made up as soon as I could.

The car has a private plate with fancy Porsche dealer plates. I've left a note on the windscreen (in a watertight sleeve) with the crime ref number and my contact details.

I am amazed that the rozzers picked up on it. I live in a remote Chiltern village and in the four years we've been here I've never seen a f'ing rozzer on patrol. That said, this issue aside, the area is crime free.

Funny how my neighbour trusted me with keeping an eye on his £500k house, his BMW 528i, his cat and fish pond but took the keys to the Boxster with him all the way with to California!

If the rozzers know it cant be moved easily as the owner is away and is aware the porka is there, I cant see the problem with leaving it exactly where it is. they can see the reg number on the tax disc anyway.

You've done everything you can, Peter C. Did your neighbour leave a contact number? If so, call him - he can chat to the police about it.

You'd hope that any other police seeing the car would receive the crime details when they called in for details of the car through the PNC or whatever.

I've let my neighbour know and told him to enjoy his holiday.

Some of the rules and regulations that the authorities have to follow are just plain crazy.
