TJ’s were sold in the UK until the mid 70’s, by the end it was big fleet operators still the main buyer like The AA and Post Office Telephones.
They continued to be built as an export model though by Bedford and its successors until… 1998!! They were/are very popular trucks in certain African countries, India and Pakistan.

If you look at the Pakistani truck mechanic videos on YouTube, where they rebuild destroyed trucks around a totally rebuilt and reinforced chassis, you will see one or two TJs.

The Leyland Marathon, so named because it would run for 26 miles between breakdowns.

I think I have a meeting in the marathon room later.

40% if what we make is a customer specific design.

Which is where I am right now. Should be Discussing cold weather testing of Battery Electric XBs  with the homologation team.

In this satellite image you can see the cabs and wheels waiting to be brought inside.

I remember before the big test track was built, they used to test chassis on the roads around Leyland. Quite cool seeing a bare chassis with a seat steering wheel &  very little else & a guy with goggles on driving around.

Test Track?  Housing estate! Screenshot_20260107_105317_Maps.jpg.fa7aec93d5141dc02664218cd54fa155.jpg

We sell a cab-less chassis to a bus company.

All test track vehicles have a full body as well as the cab for safety reasons.

Test Tracks used tend to be Lomel (Ford Europe), Daf's own track in Holland, or Millbrook innthe UK.

There is an endurance route that takes in the Yorkshire Dales.

When I lived near Waterlooville I used to see new bare chassis driven to the Wadham’s coach builders site. Always looked strange seeing them running around like that. They were for bus building, but also did ambulances and stuff like that too.

When Salvador Catano took it all over they stopped doing that though and they came on trucks instead. I guess for safety etc reasons.

Superking on the go and probably reaching for a yorkie - classic trucking right there.

Bare Dennis bus chassis were a common sight on the A3 near Guildford being  driven flat out by some intrepid soul in waterproofs and a full face crash helmet.

I could see the attraction to that job in summer, but screw that in winter! It must’ve been absolutely awful😆

They used to do a fair distance too. From the factory on the Guildford Bypass up to the M25 intersection and back. Before the M25 they used to come to the Oxshott junction which is even further.

Not sure what would be worse, my face icing up in February or wasps hitting me at 50mph in the summer

They used to go over Shap in winter taking various bus chassis up to Alexander's in Falkirk for bodying. Suffering from exposure was not unknown.

I was there back in 2016. Got a lift in this. Didn't get to visit sadly. I was offered a ride out in a fire appliance. A first. Who wouldn't jump at that?
