Tech for the sake of it

Yep, I am the driver and driving is all my responsibility, just like it was 100 years ago.

It is just so much harder to actually drive the sodding car with this artificial layer of "assistance" in the way.

So many distractions, such poor visibility, basic vehicle functions completely decoupled from the driver...

It's such a shame because often, underneath all of this crap, there is a good, safe, enjoyable car.

But that's what the average sheep wants as it's such a chore & it interferes with screen time. Rollon self driving vehicles.

I've got used to driving my dad's enyaq now, but only from learning the hard way 😂 Even when the car is happily driving itself I'm covering the pedals incase it suddenly thinks the NSL motorway we are on has turned into a 40, or as Mr @Mondeo Enjoyer said, another car does it's own thing 2 lanes away and the car reacts to is as if we're about to collide.

They don't stop you actually crashing though. We turned a corner in London somewhere at 45/50mph on the auto cruise to be met with stopped traffic. The car started to slow quite hard, but then went 'nah m8, your going to have a colission' and let off everything so the car started hurtling towards the traffic again.

I owned the xsara at the time so went for the brakes forgetting I wasn't in that and was in a then 3 month old brand ne car with massive brakes and we stopped with plenty of room to spare with little fuss but it made me wonder in 15 years what someone who has ONLY driven cars with this shit in would do... "I guess we'll crash 🤷"

Watched a guy on a big motorbike doing long, lazy 'S's as we went along a dual carriageway - he's in the inside lane about 60 mph. There's a Tesla in lane two doing about 65mph who cannot get past the bike. Every time he starts to creep past it, the bike meanders off it's centre line and the Tesla brakes back.

We sat behind the Tesla for about five miles wondering if he'd kick into manual mode and overtake the bike - nope.

Biker guy pulled off at the next junction - I bet he was grinning like fuck.

My Infiniti has a very rudimentary  collision warning system that I think is in a lot of similiar age Mercedes (the Q30 is 85% A Class).

All it does it put a light on the dash and make an alarming buzzing noise that makes you shit yourself think you've lost engine oil pressure. If anything it's off putting and I'm not sure how it would stop a crash.

It comes on if you're too close to a car on the motorway, you stop quickly behind another car,   pass a bollard, there's a sea gull in the road, it see's the ghost of the white lady of Hamilton hall crossing a field, it hits a crisp packet and many other useless scenarios. Not helpful at all.

I had a Hyundai Tuscon as a hire car last year and while a nice car the safety system was constantly grabbing the steering wheel as it thinks you've crossed a while line. It felt really dangerous as you're instinct it to counter steer what it's doing.  I know my Leapmotor is going to be full of this shite hopefully it's easy to turn off.

I've turned off the lane assist in dad's cars on every trip . So does he.

His prior ioniqs had a physical button. Ws always worn smoothb🤣 Enyaq is hidden behind a touchscreen press then an OK press! Dad has it by muscle memory now but I don't.

If we set off from his it's off 3 miles up the road because in the fens if you don't straddle the white line and  centere of the road you either fall off it or rip an axle out from under the car. Leaving from mine the roads are wider and not collapsing into the dykes so I'll get to the m40 not triggering it then suddenly shit myself as I go to change lane or wander over the white line going round the on slip and it fights me from nowhere.

I had it refuse to let me merge before! There was no gap in the stationary traffic at the time but the guy behind me had flashed. So I try to creep over but because the blind spot thing was active it wouldn't fucking do it. The traffic infront was pulling away at this point and I had to floor it to override the sensor which then threw me into the other lane faster than I wanted to just merge into it at 😡 in a normal car I'd just creep slowly into the gap as it made itself naturally. Having the indicator on didn't help either which I thought would turn off the sensor as it knows you mean to do it

I quite liked the idea of self driving vehicles,  the idea it’d take you out to Derbyshire to some pub you’d never been to before, allow you to sink several pints then take you home asleep to your house. Until I found however that you still had to be in control of it which pretty much negates the point.

Warren could do that for you in his taxi!

I've said it before on here but it bears repeating that if I'm ever driving a car that prevents me from steering my chosen direction, or steers without my direct input, or brakes when I don't want to brake, it's getting left at the side of the road and set on fire.

I never realised you could fuck about with modern cars and make them slow down and stop them overtaking, I'll have to try that.

Its the little led in the wing mirror you need to look for, it's great fun!

I undertake them slowly in l1 causing it to light up and I imagine bong their dash! Then I'll speed up and cut infront of them (not too dangerously) to kick their radar cruise in they've just left set to 64mph for the past who knows how long in lane 2.

I got the same white tesla 3 times in one trip! I kept weaving across from l1 to l3 then back to l1 again when needed with the traffic and he just stayed in lane 3. I'd out pace him down lane 1, then not be able to undertake so into l2 then l3 back infront of him, making him slow even more. It's great fun!

All of this feels like shit web design from the early 2000s.
