Is a Scooter classed as a Moped..?

I only ask as there may be one coming my way. It's only 49cc and I got my full car licence in 1992 which to me means I don't need 'L' plates or need to pass a CBT test.... or do I? :?

think you still need cbt unless it's one of those crazy pedal-to-start affairs...?

Check your licence. They did away with automatic grouping so unless you applied for it you may not have correct coding. Unless you have 'grandfather' rights, but fairly sure it was about that time the changes went through.

nar, if you have had a car licence since pre '96 you are "advised" that a cbt might be useful (like if you never rode a bike before) but it isn't required to ride a 50 twist. You can even take a passenger if you can find one brave enough.

O RLY.

I thought it only applied to pedal-things.... now someone show me an AR50, tonight I'm gonna roll like it's 1995.

don't up the powha (3.5bhp only) or fit an 80 barrel kit then... you will need CBT/bike test/it was like that when I bought it offissa otherwise ;)

We had a TS50X when my daughter was 16. That didn't have an 80 barrel and a powerpipe, honest...

At one time a moped had to have pedals but now anything under 50cc is classed as a moped. You need to have Class P on your licence.

Hmm, I'm convinced that no matter when you passed your car test you still need a CBT. Only possible exception is if it's the first time you've applied for a blike entitlement on your licence then you used to get two years before you had to do CBT.

If you don't get the 'ped you are after Dukestar give me a shout, I'll be offloading my ChinookieHiyawathKimbuchackerSsaigongEverlastElastoplast* 50cc soon.

*Not the real name but it's some Chinese shitty thing.

A moped has a maximum design speed not exceeding 50 km/h (approx. 31 mph). It has an engine capacity no greater than 50 cc and can be moved by pedals, if first used before 1 August 1977. A learner motorcycle has an engine up to 125 cc and a power output not exceeding 11 kW

I have the 'Class P' entitlement on the back of the plastic bit of the licence with the from and to dates opposite. So my presumptions were correct then :D ? Thanks guys...

Hmm. Mate of mine has what he's described as a "mint old pedal and go thing, P reg.. the old P" in his garage.

I'll have a look at it on Tuesday and report back.

50cc mopeds are FUCKING LETHAL

dont be a daft / tight cnut - do your bike test and ride something proper...

Christ - a CBT is only about £75 round this way, get one of them and you can at least ride a 125cc.

Honestly 50cc's are uber wank in traffic. They are too slow and too small.

Trust me on this, many years ago I went down the 50cc route with a Tomos Disco followed by a Honda Sky - both I got knocked off in traffic for not being fast enough for impatient cunts in faster cars. That said I did get knocked off a 500cc, but at least I put a sizeable dent in their door. The other thing about larger bikes is you comand a bit more road presence and can hold your own in traffic rather than being forced in the gutter.

Really - dont buy a 50cc unless your commute is less than a mile down some road where no body else ever goes.

Of course this is only my opinion.

I see someone has the moped experience then, I had Honda Camino with pedals - I didnt get knocked off but a bicycle was better - totally shit, couldn't even go up hills, got rid one week later and got a Honda C90, then a CG125, with a 125 at least you can ride in the traffic, Honda does a nice step through 125 now (The new version of the Honda Cub).

There's someone who rides a moped on the dual carriageway I go down - not helped by the fact he's 20 stone, and can't do more than 25mph, I'm thinking christ get a bigger engined bike

Do you remember Yamaha FS1E's ? Mate of mine use to derestrict his all the time, still goverment knows best don't they, and there's even more bike regulations on the way

I love my old QingQi 125cc 4 stroke scooter - it may be Chinese, but it is excellent fun. Can I import it into UK? What are the rules?

I'll take a guess and say it's a Puch Maxi. My dad had one of those that got nicked from Leigh station in 1991. Never did get it back, but he's still got the V5 for it. FGU 54J.

I dragged another one out of a river behind my house a few years back where it had been resting for 20 odd years. Didn't do much to it, the heap of barnacle encrusted, rusty, muddy mess was left in my parent's garage for five years until my dad put it in a skip. Oh and it wasn't his old one, we checked the frame number, this was an even earlier one, probably around 1969ish...early for a Puch Maxi.

there is a fella where I work in Skelmersdale who uses a 'moped' to travels from Old Swan and back every day (which must be at least 15 mile each direction)... I bet that's fun

as for me, I'm fairly new to the whole two-wheeled thing (I owned a Honda H100 years ago but was too young to ride it on the road  ) and just want to see what the fuss is about. I'm putting my Synergie back on the road this month as it's nearly time for the annual family holiday which means another incarceration spell for the Matiz (unless I sell it... pretty please  )

HOW DARE YOU - I look nothing like a Moped!

I owned a 50cc Vespa twist and go (variomatic!!) between 2000 and 2002 whilst living in London - absolutely fine provided most of your driving is within 30mph speed limits - 40 is ok but most cars will be speeding so can be intimidating

I wouldn't drive a 50cc on a 60mph road though

mind you some of these modern Aprillas only have 50cc but are pretty powerful some return better performance than old 125cc (depending on how fat you are)

That was a Honda Cub until he sat on it

I had a new water cooled Peugeot Speedfight 50 back in 1997. Did 1500KM's then it went for a service-check and derestriction. After that it pulled well and would do 80KP/H on the flat two up and go off the clock at 100KP/H down any sort of incline.

Great little scoot that, but restricted 50's are a nightmare
