Collection! Nibbler goes south! I’ve never owned a car with a straight 6 so I bought one! Sight unseen…

I haven’t been this excited about a new purchase since 1997 when I bought my first Capri Mk.1. This car is high up on my list. Really high! Let’s see if you guys can figure it out with the clues provided.

It all started with a picture sent to me by Rightnider. He was out on a visit to a workshop in the south of Sweden. Amongst a TR6, a Lotus Europa and a Rolls Royce was this fine piece of automotive history. I immediately fired on all cylinders as soon I was told that the car was for sale and within an hour I was in contact with the workshop owner. Trying to ignore the fact that I was second on the ball. Some sort of a YouTuber had first shot. This really dawned on me day 2 when I was told, nope the YouTuber has to look at it first. Aaarrgghhh the agony!

I was pretty sure that this car would just slip away, for that price, with that colour, the mileage, with that engine and with manual gearbox surely the YouTuber would buy it? Ignoring the fact that I’m probably the only one in the world that wants this engine more than the top of line engine. I even found a substitute vehicle that I would have a look at if this failed which I was pretty sure it would, just to numb the pain 😂 That car was a Citroën CX 2,5 GTI from 1986. A competitor to my new ride back in the days.

But on my way home from work on Monday I got a text message. The YouTuber had pulled out without even looking at the car. I was now first in line. I basically replied ”were should I send the money”

So here I am, at a hotel room outside of Stockholm the day after my friend Eskils wedding and the car is far from here, at the very south of Sweden. The radio is playing Ozzy Osbournes song Mr. Crowley but this must be a new version because it sounds like he’s singing Cowley instead of Crowley…how strange!

No I’m not at the hotel. Forgot to start this thread when I was supposed to. Right now I’m around halfway. Just passed Kalmar.

And a better picture of @Nibblers purchase.

He’s got 320 miles to drive tonight (and then return the trailer). Me, I’ve only got 60 miles.

Love it!  Nice to see the two coolest cars of the eighties back together again - oh for the days when all you had to do was walk round any housing estate in Britain to see multiple Rovers and Granadas.

Has the Rover got a 'sham' British number plate?

I’m speaking for Nibbler here, but the Rover seems to have been taken to Sweden by a Swedish citizen  moving back from Bath around 2007 and then never got round to registering it here. It even had Jane Austen cassette audiobooks in the glove box.

Oh yeah!  Didn't notice the car was RHD - suppose it just looks normal to me.

Jane Austen tapes might be a good listen, even though it doesn't sound as if Nibbler needed much persuasion (geddit?) to buy the Rover!

On the way home it started raining heavily. So I stopped for food. That’s when I noticed that one of the trailers wheels wasn’t happy…

The axle looks bent. You could easily see that the tire is at an angle. Last time I rented this specific trailer was when I bought the Audi 100 Avant 1,8 and then it had a bad wheel bearing that got really hot. This trailer is cursed. But I got it home.  Turned out the light at 1.30 AM and then the alarm went off at 4.30 AM so I’m really funny today.

The car is a 1986 2600 S with manual gearbox and really low mileage. So far all the electrics seem to work but it has some brake issues. Engine sounds sweet with good oil pressure.

Thank you!

The Tredia It’s a bit rough around the edges… but it’s a turbo and it must be pretty unique here I Sweden.

Driving a 6cyl manual SD1 whilst listening to Jane Austen.

Now THAT'S masochism

Excellent purchase, in a really lovely colour. would be interesting to have tried this alongside a CX 25 GTi.

But I'm confused about the British numberplate, if its a 1986 car, why is it wearing a number plate from 1964? (as in its a B suffix, not prefix) thats odd.

I'm glad you asked, I was wondering that too. 🤓

Private plate, I'd have thought

That makes sense

There is something about SD1s that is just right.

What work does it need?

I have owned these on and off since 1990. My current ( and sadly last) has been off the road since 2010 requiring many hours of body restoration.

Unfortunately parts availability is becoming an issue - any trim will be secondhand. Even vented brake discs for EFi cars are no longer available - I believe you can get them specially made when there is enough demand but they are £600+ a pair.
