Bottling it on Ebay, and Leyland Sherpa's question

OK, so i'm kicking myself stupid at the moment for not having had the gumption to bid on this yesterday...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT

I kept telling myself that it wasn't exactly what I wanted, and any other excuse I could find, and all the while hoping and waiting for the other half to say "Go on, do it" so I didn't have to take all the blame if it went tits up, like a complete gutless Tw@t.

:evil::cry::evil:

I even had my bid up and ready to win, but just couldn't bring myself to click the button, with all these things running round my head, when really, it was the first thing for a long time that I had actually felt comfortable about buying from Ebay.

Anyway, now i'm feeling like a right Billy Hunt 'cos I reckon i've missed a bloody good bargain, and really it would have been perfect for my plans, plus it went for much less than I expected, and it was really close to where I live.

I know it sounds daft, but I feel really stupid about it, and even the missus says she wished she'd pushed me a bit more.

So that aside, i'm looking at a really rather tidy 1975 Leyland Sherpa camper, it's quite a way away, but it's a fairly good price, and I wanted to ask if anyone could tell me a bit more about them, and whether they are a reasonable bet as campers go.

Also if anyone else has any ideas for a Classic Camper, or knows of any available at a good price.

I was thinking along the lines of a Bedford CA or CF, or Commer PB, but I don't want a VW, as I'd like to be a little different

Depends on how soon you want it?

I have got DollyWobblers old Bedford CF same spec.

Currently getting petrol gauge fitted and having a few more bits fettled on it next week before a two week trip to Outer Hebrides.

When we get back I will be looking to move it on. I am sure we can do a good price on it

Would this Sherpa be the one i posted on the ebay thread, if so i think it looks great, The interior looks lovely, I haven't got a clue what they drive like though, Quite steady i would have thought.

I was chatting to a couple at a show a few weeks ago who had just bought this CF for £700 of ebay, They said that all they had to do was clean it and fit new curtains, they showed me around it and it seemed really nice and the bloke said the 2300cc Victor engine wasn't as slow as he expected.

Yeah the 2.3 isn't too bad a lump, no racing machine but it's an old engine in an old van.

Sherpas are pretty lame to drive, iirc the one you mentioned is a 1700 'O' series petrol (or possibly 1800 Marine job) which will be laughably slow and parts will be slightly tricky, though that certainly doesn't mean it's not worth considering.

There are a few others out there possibly worth considering such as Renault Trafic/Fiat/Peugeot etc or a Mk2 Transit.

2.3 will drag the van up to really decent speeds. Had it up to 85 on motorway but then chickened it a bit

It is the drum brakes that really limit the speed. Got the 4 speed plus OD on the van and that makes a hell of a difference. At 50 it is really quite civilised.

Sounds interesting Moog, would you have any pics at all ?, what reg is it ?.

I wanted to try to get an early one if possible, but it really comes down to condition.

Trigger,

This was the Sherpa I was looking at, and i'm just waiting for an email back, although with what Cavette/ Billy has just said, and the fact it has an 1800 in it, I will think very carefully.

That CF is nice though, and very well bought by that couple you met.

I have also found a '64 CA, in primer basically with little between it and an MOT for about £1100 Neg., and a '68 Commer PB that needs some work, so I have a few options, but it was just that the one I "FAILED" on was in nice nick and an early '73.

I did actually mail the seller, after the end saying that i'd missed the end, and if for any reason it wasn't going to go through to contact me, and i'd more than likely have it.

I had asked him some questions about the van before, and do still have his mobile, so might call him just to check what the situation is.

Moog's van is called Bernard, but she's a girl. Think I forgot to explain that while we were exchanging pleasantries! If she becomes the club 'bike,' that'd be very cool.

As has been said, they really don't hang about with the 2.3 overdrive set-up. Bye bye VW scenesters!

I don't have that much experience of true sherpas but the LDV Pilot isn't a bad old van. Just remember to grease the kingpins or you will be buying a new front axle every MOT.

I expect you could twin carb the Sherpa, ala Marina TC, for a bit more oomph.

Just had this back from the owner of the Sherpa

"The bodywork / rusty bits are above the windscreen, both rear corners have been filled but rust breaking through, front arches the same, it had a full respray about 2 years ago but looks like the prep in these areas was poor. The rest of the van is pretty good for it's age, rear bumpers could really do with replacing, needs a general tune up, the steering is not a 100% but since we got the re-con steering box it's a load better. "

And anyway, i'm not in any tearing hurry, i'd rather wait and get what I want, plus it'll give me time to get some more cash together.

I do like this,

but a bit pricey considering you've got to pay an extra £500 for it to be ready to go.

"Looking for around £3995......as it is! Or £4500 MOT and Taxed"

I was thinking four grand seems steep for a Commer camper. Then I saw it. That's a right honey but probably still a bit overpriced.

It is being sold by a VW 'specialist' though, so in the real world you can halve that price.

If I complain to ebay about the misleading title ('VW Camper'), maybe it'll get pulled, and you can ring him up and make an offer instead of having to shell out for more listing fees....

My dad used to have a Sherpa camper identical to the one on Ebay. He said it had the heaviest steering of anything he'd ever driven, so bad it hurt his arms to haul it around corners - and he's driven some right tired old heaps. Apparently it was comically slow and noisy as well.

I can't link to it from this phone but there's a VW camper on retro rides at the moment for sale, he said that he'll take £750 for it and you might have to get your hands dirty but it might be worth a look.

Ahh obviously I haven't been calling her Bernard enough DW.

Had a petrol gauge fitted today (and they fixed the rev counter etc) but now she wont start. All fun and games considering we leave next friday for holiday. Hopefully the auto electric guys will fix it tomorrow.

It is a W reg so 1980. I have linked to DW photos. To be honest if you wanted a long term keeper that is mint then this probably isnt it. If you want a bit of fun then this is definitely is it.

Just took a look at that, even though it's a VW, it's quite tempting, as it would be worth getting done, then flog it on to some salivating VW Scene Monkey, for over what it's worth.

Only problem is, getting it back from Bedford to near Kent, as I would imagine a Hauler would cost silly money, thus negating any profit to be made, and I wouldn't want to try driving it back, i'm not that lucky

Moog, I am having a serious think about Bernard, it's not an impossibility.

Have you never considered a Mk1 transit? One of my members is selling a tax exempt pop top, if you are.

Hi Fred

I did have a look at that one you posted the link for and it's lovely, and if I had the money I would, but it's a bit beyond my means at the moment.

I've only got about £1700 to play with at the moment, but it's slowly rising, but £3000 plus might as well be a Million at the moment.

/\/\/\/\ Seller says it was one of the first types of motorhomes built by CI.

Those type of caravan windows didn't appear until the early 80's. Caravans and campers of that Transit's vintage would have surely have glass windows....

Interesting Merc peeping into one of the shots.

That caravan must have been going some speed down the hill to have ended on the chassis cab.

GR8 for Wannabe Pikey's.

All i'd need is more Tattoo's, not bath for a year, lose some teeth, and acquire a missus the size of an elephant, dripping with Gold of course, with less teeth than me, 8 shoeless brats of varying ages, all called Wayne or Shane or Luke or something equally suitable, and learn how to Tarmac Drives badly, or butcher peoples hedges, then use it to drive defenseless old ladies to the cash point, to plunder their life's savings, whilst threatning bodily harm.

Yeah, I could do that

Still, nice wellers.....

That's like saying "That girls got great legs, Shame the rest of her looks like she done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson whist licking piss of a stinging nettle".

Also with this guy i've just noticed that he's joined the Commervanfan club, and everyone's welcoming him, as they do here, and he's only really done it to get a price for his van, I mean, at least be honest, and say your selling it and what's it worth ?, he'd probably get some sensible offers.

Sounds like a typical VW Scenester to me
