I'm sorry for anyone on the A1 who needs to bare with a black Range Rover seemingly stuck at 50mph. I want to go faster, too.

At least I'll be able to achieve some decent mpg numbers after this 😂

Its interesting how different that part of the dashboard is between pre and post facelift cars.

The facelift interior makes all the difference for me, it feels a lot less utilitarian and plasticy and more like that of a luxury vehicle.

And said luxury vehicle has finally made it home, but not before putting it to good use and move some junk.

I've tried to see if I can diagnose the gearbox issue while on the road. When warm there is slip in 4th under wide open throttle, slip in 5th under anything but gentle throttle and slip almost permanently when giving it any throttle in 6th. That naturally triggers limp home mode pretty much instantly which locks you in 3rd. Since there's no slip in the other gears and it does actually shift into All gears smoothly I would assume the clutch packs are toast. How that happened in the high gears only is anyone's guess but I don't think individual solenoids are to blame here, neither will it be low on fluid I think. If anyone has any further insight into these early 6-speed gearboxes LR used in the L322, L320 and Discovery, let me know!

Haven't that German YouTube couple Landover Time(?) just rebuilt a gearbox with £30 of seals.

Sorry, not able to juggle this on the tablet, but the YouTube channel is actually, LR TIME and it's today's "DIY Transmission Shudder Fix ZF 6HP" if you googlify it.

Yeah, in this case it's a slip that is so severe that it's impossible to be anything other than smoked clutch packs.

It got up to 28.5mpg in the end. Who knows what it would do with twice the gears!

It’s actually cheaper to make.

Ford went through the L322 and found about £2k of cost savings per vehicle, one of which was getting rid of that full width piece of leather on the dashboard to cut down on wastage.

They've done an excellent job then as it actually feels higher quality. I'm not sure if the driver/front passenger facing panels running from left to right are leather in the Vogue SE and higher, if they are that's one of the first upgrades I'd want to do on mine.

it’s not that the panels aren’t leather, it’s the size .

Look at the piece which runs across the centre  vents, it’s huge in the 2002 car and is multiple pieces in the post facelift car.

I've always thought the facelift interior on these was a downgrade. Still nice, but never felt quite as nice to me.

Id disagree but obviously each to their own. The one thing thats undeniable is the increased reliability of the ford modules that will have rather than the BMW equipment the earlier models have.

There's a story that Bill Lyons, in an effort to cut costs, ordered that Jaguars didn't need carpeting under the front seats.  In a case of Chinese Whispers, line staff were bemused to be told to cut out the carpet and throw it away.

I used to sell quite a bit of this to a customer who would run worn out land rover autos.

Basically it's just mega thick ATF.

I actually have a bottle of this ready to go into slipping gearbox in my Lincoln 😂

I'll speak to my local Land Rover specialist this afternoon to have his thoughts, it very much sounds like rear stator bush, which basically means it needs a gearbox rebuild, unfortunately a fairly common problem with Land Rovers that have the ZF 6-speed. Good thing that I already expected this to be the case, now I just need to find the most cost effective way of getting it done to a high standard with as long of a warranty as I can get!

Obviously its not my money but personally at this price level I'd gamble on a used box and TC from a relatively known source, give it a full service, stick in some Dr Tranny and hope for the best.

When I was quoted thousands to rebuild the E46 ZF, this option was the only economically viable one based on the value of the car. Thankfully it paid off which is just as well as the willing gentleman who changed the box has had enough of that kind of job for a while now 😅

Unfortunately garages round my way weren't interested in gambling with me but NorthernMonkey did a brilliant job!

Try these guys in Burradon.

https://austrin-engineering.co.uk/

They're a very professional outfit and rebuilt my transit custom gearbox with a new clutch and flyweel. Dropped it off one day and picked it up next day all done. They've just rebuilt the autobox on my mate's 2018 large jeep something or other.
