Any of you perverts want to buy some pure Shiters gold?

Well, it's not actually gold - not even of the Harvest variety , but it is shite of the highest order, and pretty rare now I should think.

An accidental find this afternoon in the back of a dark and gloomy garage, this is something that'll blow your beige Maxis off the shite-o-meter. Initially spotted whilst talking to the garage owner about his "D" plate Cortina P100, I very nearly had a full on chubby when I spotted a set of little white sill stripes nestling in the corner, but I didn't take any pics... I'm going back next week to get those. If the car can be dug out from its hiding place for the last 10 years or so.

Shiters, you'll be proud of me for this, but I really don't want to end up owning it. It's far too shite for me.

It is, a 1972 Morris Marina 1.8 TC 4 door in purple. 38k miles, one owner from new, original plates, mint looking orangey red vinyl interior, original radio etc... and it's an AUTO.

Now, if I can persuade the bloke to flog it, who's interested? It actually appears rather tidy under the dust.

i used to think the TC meant twincam - how wrong i was

id be interested in the P100 though

It means MGB powaaaaah. As you no doubt know.

He's had the P100 for about 18 years, and it's been off the road for all of 'em. It had a bump when 2 years old and he's fixed it rather well. The bed is off at the moment, but that looks mint. He may sell. It's done 48k miles, and he's fitted a 2.0 to it, so it should go well.

He's after a tail light for it if anyone has one.

Heh, I drove a Marina in 1989 and that was enough for me. Owning one would just be taking the piss somewhat, and it'd dig into the resto funds of the others.

I should imagine it'd be cheap. The chap who's got it knows exactly how shite it is.

When I was 16 a mate had a purple TC marina Cooop. I thought it was the dogs dicks

If A5 doesn't want the P100 I'll have next dibs please :D

Pics/price/location please!

I still did!, What does it mean then? Twin Carb?.

Is it true the handling on the Coupes were a bit dire to say the least?.

Posted

It meant Twin Carb if you had a Marina, Triumph or Rover 2000.

The handling on them all was a bit lairy, but it became more of an issue on the more powerful variants.

I read they understeered slightly, I've never driven one. Think they look as good as a mk2 Escort, probably due to dwindling loss of familiarity.

I thought the title was a reference to this. I saw a story somewhere this morning but didn't read it. Thought it was in The Register or on the Beeb's news site, apparently not :(

Keep it that way chief, they're fucking horrible things.

Marina understeer has to be experienced to be believed. I realise at the moment there are people reading this, who've not driven a Marina, who think that it's all just a nasty smear campaign set up by car snobs, but it isn't. They really are as bad as all that, and they get worse the faster they go.

If I can get this thing for a price I'd pay for it, I'll let you find out for yourself.

I had the pleasure of owning a manual on of these. I didn't buy it of course, I swapped it for a Datsun 180B SSSSSSSSSS that I couldn't shift 'cos it had a dogleg box which frightened everone off. IIRC if you booted it on the motorway it would jump a lane, sometimes to the left and sometimes to the right..... It would always jump a lane for certain though.

I don't remember mine understeering excessively.

In comparison to what? A canal barge?

MGB-spec engine wasn't quite the same as the Marina TC one, biggest difference was that Marina ones had crankshafts made from beetroot or similar, Bs had decent quality, forged steel. Here's the story of the how and the why, I challenge anyone to remain awake to the end of that.

TC auto eh? Ooh, lovely, 'cos a BW35 is sure to be heavy enough to give the suspension a proper workout, not like the girlie bloody Herald 'box in the manuals.

I'd have one, but only if it came with some real weight at the pointy end, none of that B-series nonsense for me, oh no, I want an Australian one with the 2.6 litre 'E' series straight six. Now that is a heavy engine and yes, from what I can gather, they shared the suspension with the lesser model.

I can only marvel at how it is that tens of thousands of innocent Australian motorists weren't Marina'd to death back in the day.

'B' series, heavy and car fitted with it understeery? Depends upon what you're comparing it to.

But a TC auto is a rarity, so really it ought to be photographed extensively prior to being crushed under a pile of collapsing masonry in some form of bizarre accident.

My Marina TC made my Mk3 2000 GT Cortina with shagged shocks and void bushes feel like a Lotus Esprit.

Turning the steering wheel in my old Marina made no difference whatsoever to the direction it wanted to go in , really scarry shit

@ warren t claim: Your current avatar makes me feel like locking all of the doors and windows, then sleeping with a loaded rifle under the bed, unless they catch the bad man soon.....

Here's a vid of a Marina, see how well it corners:

Marina Club Concours winner attempts to leave the showfield discretely...

I'd rather sit through 2 girls 1 cup again than watch that Marina vid.

Marina press photo, or the result of a terrible understeer-related near-miss testing incident at MIRA?

You decide...

Nope.

I lost the will to live after the first paragraph.

I'd love another Marina.

Especially an early TC in black tulip.

But I hate automatics. Grr!

How much is this Marina then? a 1.8 TC auto sounds absolutely dire, I would like to drive one to experience that new low in vehicle dynamics.

Can we have pictures, as i like cars that cant turn corners, thats why i also like 60s american cars ;)

In the mean time, have a cool marina......

I don't know yet, but I'm gonna go back to find out.. I will report back.

The only Marina I've ever driven was a late estate with a 1.7 O-series - were the O's lighter than the B's? The car didn't drive as badly as I was expecting, although to be fair I didn't push it too hard.

I'd heard the 1.3 Marinas stay on the road a lot better than the 1.8s - a combination of a much lighter engine giving the Moggie front suspension more of a chance, and the fact that they're so underpowered they never really get going fast enough to get into major trouble.
