Some of my random London spots from the last year..

I`ve not logged in for a while, so apologies for the overload.. 🤪
99.5% of this lot are within the London ULEZ, so the non-compliant (pre-March 2001 & under 40yo) driving spots are either paying the "tax", or, are registered disabled.

Some cracking stuff there. Great to see the utter prick of a mayor hasn’t managed to destroy everything unique, old or interesting yet. Tosser.

That white 73 Cadillac has a similar reg number to my Mercury. YND XXXL - must have come over at a similar time.

Posted

What a haul! Good to know there’s a decent amount of old grot still kicking about, though you must have covered a decent number of miles to pick up that lot.

Hard to choose a highlight, though a V-plate Renner 18 that survived past about 1995 is a vanishingly rare thing.

Oof, that '93-96 Cadillac Fleetwood is particularly interesting, not all that many of them around!

Posted

Unsurprisingly I recognise a large number of these. There are quite a few which I used to see out and about but haven't since ULEZ, but I can see above, so glad to see they survive even if not used much nowadays.

Posted

I don’t know anything really about those stupid ULEZ and those others around the country, but if I understand it right…

You could use that 73 Cadillac as a daily driver and have no issues and no charges? But you get shafted if you want to use a 98 Vauxhall Corsa (for example)?
If that’s the case I’d just get something enormous and ancient and stick it to Mayor Wankstain that way!

It’s absolutely crazy then really. Not that I see any problem with using the Cadillac or any other big engine but how is it right?! Your essentially being penalised for trying to do the right thing!

Huge monster classic as a toy - fine.
Small cheap efficient car as daily - great.

Not here it seems.

I would imagine Khan wanted to charge the over 40 year old cars too but all the rich classic E type and Aston owners who vote for him would be upset so he didn't!

Same reason he doesn't seem to think there's anything wrong with driving massive SUVs and Supercars around central London

Wow, almost too many spots to take them all in, but I love the SD3 Rover 200 series.

I can buy that Renner, & I want to, as its ULEZ exempt (I had a 1.6 TS estate back in the early 90`s, looked mint, unfortunately the inner wings were parting company from the bulkhead, so I got shot ASAP!) Its got a stupidly low mileage (34k), but hasn't seen the road since the 90`s, so its gonna need a lot of work, especially to the fuel & braking systems & all new bushes.. When the money/time/space combo is right, I`ll get it.. (which could take years!).

I`ve also been offered this very tidy & fully legal 105,000 mile 1994 Montego Countyman 2.0 estate from an OAP who worked for Rover as a consultant, & got it as an ex-demo, I want that too, although it makes less sense due to the fact its not ULEZ compliant, & wont be for some time (which is why he`s selling it)..

If you drive a Yaris 1.0 that was registered on the 28th of Feb 2001, you will also find yourself falling foul of the rules, even though it could well have come over on the same boat as one registered on the 1st of March 2001.. It will be compliant, but you have to get a compliance letter from Toyota, then get it registered with TFL London to get it accepted.. You`ll also have to register it in all the different cities who also operate LEZ`s if it falls foul of their rules, as they all work independently from each other.. Obviously my 4 pre-2000 Fiats are all shitoutaluck, so I barely use them these days..

Under 15,000 miles from new that VP, & very long term owned.. He also owns the Daimler SII & the Mk4 Escort Bonus van, which he has had from new!

Fantastic spots UKS. That '74 Blue Daimler 4.2 is the one for me. I'd love to have smoked about London in one of those. However, with the massive rise in bike use and sadly many of those being brain donors and entitled half-wits, it doesn't sound very attractive any longer.

When I visited central London years ago in my Mk1 Sterling, it was kind of a sweet spot, not enough bikes to cause misery, but the central London charge was in place (about £12 a day iirc).

Both of my cars are compliant so no issues going into Birmingham, London or Brussels.

Its not at all fun any more down here, I used to go out specifically to go spotting, I`d just aim for an area I`d never been to before & go exploring for autoshite, but no more, its just too stressful, with all the 20 zones, LTN`s, no left/right turns, box junctions, all policed by cameras.. Shame they couldn't pick up my Jag or the flatbed that took it when it got nicked a few months ago, despite all these camera`s surveying our every move..

And that says it all. All the cameras and for what? To catch a normal citizen commitment a minor offence. Yet when a major crime happens? "Oh, sorry, we're not able to use the cameras for that purpose because of 'xyz' etc..."

And that says it all. All the cameras and for what? To catch a normal citizen commitment a minor offence. Yet when a major crime happens? "Oh, sorry, we're not able to use the cameras for that purpose because of 'xyz' etc..."

Exactly that, I said to the copper on the phone, the place it was taken from is surrounded by ULEZ & traffic light cameras, some within 100 meters, & the van isnt ULEZ compliant, so it will have flagged on them, & so you should be able to trace at least some of its route, she said "our cameras aren't linked to TFL ones sir"...

Brilliant.. Just brilliant..

I also sent the CCTV stills twice, to specific emailed links they sent me, & 3 times they told me "I cant find them sir".. No idea if they got them the third time, I`ve totally given up on them..

I can trundle around in my Capri running on a carb, points, condenser etc quite happily. No ULEZ to pay.

The mondeo - 20 years later with fuel injection, ECUs and all that jazz - no chance!

Great spots as ever, and it is true that it's not quite as fruitful as it once was. I always do spotting on foot so don't get caught in the malady of ULEZ and LTNs, I can imagine those being very draining.

I did have to pay ULEZ a few weeks ago as I was diverted onto the North Circular due to roadworks (the cheek!!!) but I think in a big old diesel that's pretty fair.

Did the Montego guy give you any idea of price yet?

Indeed..

Also, speaking of nicked cars, this Cortina was nicked from a lockup up my road at the end of last summer, possibly by the bloke standing next to it (who was viewing it as it was up for sale), the owner lives down the end of my road, guess how the insurance company declined his claim? Because it was insured as being on his drive, not in a lockup...  As far as I know, its not been recovered & he never got a penny..

Cheers mate. No, not yet, I was thinking of popping down at some point, as its been a couple of months since he called me (its not changed ownership according to the DOOVLA, so should still be there). I`m just hoping he doesnt say he wants an outlandish amount, as I`ll have to walk if he does! (I think he just wants to to go to a good home, as his kids & grandkids aren't interested in it, but we`ll see)

I remember hearing about this '69 GT350 being nicked some years ago. It lived in Acton:

Comes as no surprise unfortunately.. I`ve now devoted a folder to my stolen ex spots on Flickr, there's that many that have gone, especially in the last 3-4 years..

Am pleased to see Apex still finding it better to keep their some non ulez smiley transits. Not really to surprised thats its financially viable to spunk 4.5 k a year on ulez charges ( if used every day) over paying for a new van and running costs. Aint been passed that way in a while they used to have loads and all in fine fettle too.

Cracking bunch of pics there. Well played.
