2009 CashCow - My friends wife's new qashqai

A friend asked me to nip him over to get his car from having it's mot, so I did a 5 mile round trip and the back discs are cleaning up nicely

No immediate seizing of a caliper either so hopefully that'll be good to go for a while now, will check it doesn't become unhappy on the m40 before calling it truly done, but I think I'm going to stay at home tomorrow so don't need to check

I fancied doing some pottering. Mostly because some post arrived. I was watching some generic k9k videos the other day and this part blowing apart/splitting is a common occurance

PXL_20250704_171139014.jpg.2b4a570d8c86ec7fdd3d2011bb5a368e.jpg

It has always been misting out oil, so I took it off

PXL_20250704_171655553.jpg.bd0d1c53f5e23db49068bd3bc2307f5d.jpg

The inner rubber seal was all folded back on itself, that won't be helping. But we're going further quickly. Covers off!

PXL_20250704_171809317.jpg.8206771f41f5415ac4db5ffb5f375374.jpg

I dropped a shit load of oil down here and from the looks of it wasn't the first person to do so

PXL_20250704_171812527.jpg.ce117a7daa4010b3f2a0da5698bf7106.jpg

What I also wanted to do was remove the big pile of dead leaves gathered in the lower engine plastics. These were bone dry when I did the cambelt but luckily* alot of the oil spillage must run down here as they were covered in oil

PXL_20250704_172326749.jpg.3fc729c37267ae10e3e7e25a10577460.jpg

Got my cordless shitter vac out

PXL_20250704_172333639.jpg.5c02d191da7271a85095a591d4426753.jpg

And sucked it all up, I cut down a little bit of hosepipe and sucked the oil out of the holes too

PXL_20250704_172606710.jpg.dced3808340dae5b0b6fedac38bea324.jpg

That done, I put the covers back on and cleaned this all up a bit

PXL_20250704_172613080.jpg.623f1ea5893f566a8db5499bdbd7f8e5.jpg

Got my new shiny £8 part

PXL_20250704_173114659.jpg.30cbe6d13a9020becd69e83223b8719c.jpg

Aaaaaand it's wrong 😡

PXL_20250704_173232939.jpg.594af190cc888120206291bd99be958d.jpg

I took a closer look at the rubber seal, which wasn't very rubbery anymore

PXL_20250704_173318830.jpg.5374597828c4b8763bcf6f46c557c46f.jpg

So I pretended it was a rubber hoover part, the bellows say from a 1950/60's vacuum and dunked it in boiling water and washing up liquid

PXL_20250704_173711326.jpg.7ae81e03a5aa92021e92c00233eb0867.jpg

I'm now drinking the cup of tea next to it whilst it heats up and hopefully goes more round.

It went back into shape well enough

PXL_20250704_175432301.jpg.917bf0e4723b9d2dabbaf1ce5f2d9e20.jpg

Once I looked at it clean it was clear it clips over the end of the plastic pipe which I did, making sure internally wasn't bent

PXL_20250704_175436176.jpg.db5bbb5c25aae67461404a8eae1f0913.jpg

And fitted it nicely on. Everything clamped and bolted down and I wasn't noticing an air leak before, will see if I notice there isn't one when I next drive it!

I dropped the bolt for the boost sensor down into the undertray so popped a corner off and fished it out. Replaced that corner with a new fixing, then went around the engine bay replacing really loose ones with the 7mm mushroom fixings I'm buying by the 20 pack 😂 Several things are now less loose which could be nice.

I topped the screenwash up then when my back was turned the cap popped off and clattered down into the undertray 😡 it can bloody stay there now, poxy thing

The handbrake was pretty shit. Went up six clicks and only did something on click 5. So, I got the car up in the air earlier, both sides on axle stands!

PXL_20250712_163121323.jpg.6a9e1f555c38c0459c1eb85ba835fe7e.jpg

The most iffy disc is cleaning up nicely, probably only done 100 miles though

PXL_20250712_163127769.jpg.a18346689813cf751578af08697a900d.jpg

I tried to adjust it all with the handbrake off but couldn't get the disc to lock, so pulled the lever to click 2 and got both sides locked solid on the adjuster. Backed each side off 1/2 a turn until the disc turned with mild catching then with the handbrake off all is well. Once the wheels are on the ground I'll let the lever adjuster off a few turns and try to make 4/5 clicks locked solid.

But the car is floating nicely

PXL_20250712_164502080.jpg.8bad5c2e43697f7cbbd27229d1f271fc.jpg

So, I spent 20 minutes taking ALL the rear plastics and bumper off, and got the pressure washer out!

PXL_20250712_171449450.jpg.81f463ec4063a8ec1553c449763aca99.jpg

The short lance made quick work of blasting all the remaining mud and shite out, I got all the back subframe and the fuel tank too. Came up nicely

PXL_20250712_172941415.jpg.bc0d59185d103474d23ba6383601f2db.jpg

I'm going to have my dinner then in about half an hour it should be dry to start painting the hammerite on 👌 I'm planning to do an coat over both back wheel wells entirely, then build up a few layers at the back.

It's like painting with clay 😂 I've used a quarter of the tin and done a big thick coat over everywhere I want to go. I was spooning it over where I did the Fibreglass and it filled all the little voids really nicely! Done the entire back corners of the body underneath, and did the big rail on the body and some other part. Hoping I can do another coat tomorrow morning when this has dried a bit

PXL_20250712_181740745.jpg.a4e58181730ffc08080bdefb3a023e69.jpg

I bought 50 brushes for £8 posted. Used 3 so far

Woke up this morning and got back to it! Put Charlie in some disposable clothes and he did the passenger arch and I did the drivers side

PXL_20250713_071222362.jpg.4824b8fe9d4d66ed89779e361c51e881.jpg

The thick coat yesterday had gone nice and solid, so we did one nice coat over everything, 2nd layer over what we did yesterday too

PXL_20250713_072952227.jpg.93a7991f808c6bc2cc7b1e8814171351.jpg

PXL_20250713_073001810.jpg.eb604c159ea25d84a9cc4e304314babc.jpg

Hopefully it'll stop the noise of all the little stones flinging out of the tyres and clattering around the wheel well too 🤞

I then busted out my pack of clips for the rear arch trim and replaced all the broken ones

PXL_20250713_080355509.jpg.730e6c4fab2fdc92e2f676e42cd9de41.jpg

Ignoring this little bubble along the way

PXL_20250713_080417632.jpg.355a736ff2943e8ed93a4714ec8cf31c.jpg

Every fixing now has a proper mushroom clip in it (some re used from before, and another new pack) and everything is solid, not moving about and probably together better than it has been in years! Zero cable ties used, and I don't want to be back here for a good while now! Stuck the plastics in without the waxoyl fully cured, I'm hoping it sort of sticks the edges down

PXL_20250713_081834746.jpg.539647f4e94c06303c33e0f338e181db.jpg

Having a coffee then I'll get the wheels back on, wash my hands for the 17th time and finish off the handbrake

Posted

Needed both back wheels off in turn to adjust it more! First test run the passenger side locked on and skidded the wheel but was still mega uneven so backed that side off a turn, put a turn on the driver's side and now it locks both wheels up pretty evenly and will drag the back end down the road (at low speed) at click 3 😉 Car is immobile on click 4

Obligatory high speed run check to make sure the shoes aren't dragging on the disc inside is still needed but it feels fine for now!

This is the last planned job now. Mot next, I'm still quite nervous about it all 😂 Hopefully my rear end repairs will be OK, it'll be something else I'm sure. Ah well, next months problem!

I'll be painting the underside of the Carina in goop soon, too.

It's very satisfying! Clean it up first though. I've done a few half arsed rounds with a wire brush and poking the worst flaky bits off with a screwdriver then a good jet wash. I've put rust converter over the subframe stuff and will keep doing that first, I don't fully trust the hammerite stuff to convert and treat what's underneath, but I can see both making a decent combo!

Goes reasonably hard too, I was worried how gloopy it would stay but it's going solid in this heat. That's why I tested some yesterday before doing the entire arch 😂 Remains to be seen how it holds up to being washed but I don't plan on doing that anytime soon

If the mot man doesn't poke any holes through anything I'll be covering the shit out of the structural bits over the autumn! May as well give it one good honest test first though, no good hiding something that is important (yet)

What specific Hammerite product is it? Assuming the ‘underbody seal’ in a tin?  Nice finish - I’ve used the aerosol on previous cars but it doesn’t really give a thick covering like this, which would stave off stones etc.

Seeing Charlie painting that car remaindered me of my dad sending me under Cortinas in the sixties armed with mastic paint to try and stop them rotting.

This exact listing. I've used half the tin but did all up under the back chassis rails and very VERY thickly 😂

I've been out twice too as eva wanted to go to the next village to play with her mates and it's cut down a shit ton of droning I didn't really notice anyway as a nice side effect! If it passes the mot I'm going to do the rest of the body just for that! Having all the rear plastics properly fixed in has stopped some rattles as well! Got no reason to have the front undertray off atm but it would benefit too as I used a mish mash of the half broken original fixings to do it back in the spring. I'll probably have a weekend doing this to the front subframe at some point and do the entire front end of the car

These are the brushes too. Again surprisingly OK. I scrubbed them out going around stuff before they truly died. No idea if any bristles came out as if they did it's added strength 🤷

Got 43 left...

Off to the tip in the morning bright and early so packed the car up. Was sat playing with the headunit afterwards and the front camera software had an update!

PXL_20250802_185841094.jpg.d4fd0eea3c79c880f1d5c55c099c55f1.jpg

PXL_20250802_185914540.jpg.563c9b0b3f0aa90dfb77f8e4e02a973d.jpg

And now there's lots more options!

PXL_20250802_185945136.jpg.cc2cc98f5e6761ebb78aeb151b243804.jpg

PXL_20250802_190006070.jpg.ebdb9b3a61de1b1f10ced23d31651243.jpg

I've now got lane guidance, speed limit sign reading, accident avoidance (I guess alerting) systems...all the things I hate about dad's car, but the Chinese version 😂 (that won't brake the car fucking sharply because it thinks it's a 30 when it's a 50 on the road we're physically on)

I got Charlie to run into the front of the car a few times and it did nothing, I guess it needs the GPS to be showing speed so we'll play with it on the way to the tip tomorrow, see if it does anything!

Another handy thing, possibly the most is it's switched/given the option to have the speed in mph not kmh

Im more amazed the built in app got an update and successfully installed it tbh

What are the other options for the overspeed alarm note apart from Dangdang?

Nothing, their just tick boxes. About to head out though so I'll see if it does anything

Its either DangDang or DangNothing I think

It worked/does some new stuff! It took half a mile for it to calibrate itself, but when it did the lane things as above started showing, and other cars! It speaks as well (which I want to turn off). Doesnt seem to read the speed signs or give any indication of the multiple times I was speeding, but it's fun to see! Charlie took some photos and a short video, which is at the start of there, before the entire trip to the tip! I've not actually really looked at the footage from it yet, it's not great but on par with the £30ish the dashcam cost (probably sub £10 on ali express)

Beko's trip to the tip!

I could never really do anything but that as a kid or I'd feel sick. Can't read in a moving thing even now 😂

Tbh he falls asleep anything over 45 minutes, then I can put my music back on and crack on (usually just as we leave Wing and enter the faster dual carriageway roads after maybe hitting 45mph from aylesbury, bloody road)
