On a related note - because it probably doesn’t warrant its own thread - thinking of how VW decided twice that they couldn’t be arsed to make a new Golf ragtop to go with the new model, and so just kept churning out the old one instead (at least they fitted the new face to the MK3, albeit the end result looked wank); are there any other mainstream examples of old/previous models carrying on because the new range didn’t provide a replacement?

Porsche 911 carried on a lot longer than the intended replacement, the 928.

BMW E30 Touring lasted a couple of years after the E36 Saloon and Coupe were introduced.

And of course the round nose Mini out lasted two replacements, the Clubman and the Metro.

Don't think the first gen Fiat Panda has been mentioned yet, that had a pretty good run 1980-2003

And of course the Fiat 126/126P with a run of 28 years, 1972-2000

Thus, the R52 allowed owners to continue the joy of owing* a Tritec engine.

Tritec or Prince ? I know which one I'd rather have...

Lada Niva, 1977-present.

We somehow have forgotten the Fiat 124, first sold in 1966, which remained in production as the Lada 2017 up to the mid-2010s :

Usually their 7th owner, when they realise what a poor choice they had made.

7th owners vehicles tend to be the ones at end of life so possibly more shit because of lack of maintenance and care for the previous 6? And the 7th owner is just glad they even have a car to drive to work in, so even though they know it’s shit, don’t care much

To now, although there was a fairly heavy revision in 2018.

That's me in the Mercedes showroom in downtown Munich in September 2018 being shown over it. The blazered gent is a friend of a friend who works as a sales trainer for Daimler-Benz.

It ended up only costing the equivalent of £4000 in Italy when production ceased.

I'm happy with the Tritecs that we've owned and the current R56/R55 Minis we have run on the BMW W16 engine (aka PSA HDi) - not had a Prince engine purely on their reputation. I have worked on the chain in a Prince pezz (N14) and that was a faffle. The engine's reputation also put me off a petrol RCZ

A friend of mine ran a petrol Peugeot RCZ a few years ago and had no end of trouble with it, ended up selling it for a thumping loss just to get shot of the fucker

I had a whim about them a maybe 2-3 years ago and did a bit of research on the petrol ones and the engine came across as just not being built for longevity.
Given my pockets are deep but my arms short then I quit the idea as it sounded a bit like a financial lottery.

p.s. now an HDi would be OK but the Financial Controller here says 'non'

It’s been a multitude of different cars along the way though?

The Beetle, Mini etc, they remained true to the original concept from start to finish.  Corolla is just a name Toyota stick on cars that change to something completely different next time around?

This is true, but they've always stayed true to their bloodline by being very boring. The nearest thing to interesting in the mundane versions was the E12.

Edit:- They are a great car to sell, though.

The thing is between Corollas and say, Renault 12s and Dacias is that 1 is recognisably the same car with different badges and the other is different cars with the same badges.

The thread is slightly confused between actual cars that have had a long production run and just a name being used for a long time but on essentially different cars.

 Land rover 1948 to 2016.

I'd argue that the early 80s coil sprung 90/110/130 is a very different vehicle from its predecessors. There might be the odd shared part and they are a similar type of vehicle but they are far from the same vehicles

The little Suzuki 4x4s definitely qualify.

SJ: 1981-1998 in Japan, into the 2000s elsewhere and right up to 2018 as a Maruti in India.

Jimny: 1998-2018 with only one facelift so subtle you wouldn't notice (and continued to 2022 in Brazil).

The E36 coupe, convertible and touring all carried on for a couple of years after the E46 was introduced, too.

& The LJ80 goes back to the early 70's I think.

But the van version goes all the way back to the XA Falcon of 1972!
