I keep saying that all the shit we said about Yugos in its homeland is caused by no one driving a Mini. You guys had it significantly worse than us, at least from the reliability perspective. 😅

I really really hope your experience ends up being different.

I’d love one, but not had the chance yet. I’m not sure I’m that much of a masochist

The word yet there is quite dangerous when I've turned a corner on BMW maintenance, have a Boxster to feed, and my C6 is giving me evil looks from the parking space over the road...

That’s hilarious, love it

fingerscrossed for a smooth rebuild (no chance obviously)

Well bought sir! Ignore all the reliability downers, these are probably the best car ever built (in my somewhat biased opinion). My wife used her clubby estate, that I restored for her, for 9 years in her day job as a supply teacher - up until a couple of years ago - and, in all that time (and 75,000 miles) had two breakdowns, both caused by leaky modern radiators.

1275 Cooper S engine, 3 synchro gearbox, never failed to start on the coldest, wettest Cornish mornings.

Service it like you're meant to, fit a splash shield in front of the dissy and you can't go wrong.

If you change your mind and decide to get rid of it..........

Ok, so, I have no clue about what engine it is, anyone know from looking at it?

second, look at the added lightness and extra gauges, it’s a rally car bro 😂

Can anyone identify these rather cool 10” alloys ?

Can't remember where the part number is cast into the head but if it's 12G940 that's first prize.

MG Metro rocker cover for +20 cool points.

I've never seen the Swiss cheese clutch housing (cooling?).

Mine had a similar dash with lots of switches and gauges to tell me when it was about to break down.

What manifolds are behind the head? Carb?

Peugeot 806 or dispatch, probably a 806 as it has a rev counter!

I should have explained, this was my (t)rusty tow vehicle.
the 220k mile 2.0 hdi just got a bit warmer than usual (only 5-8 degrees higher than normal) towing this 16ft x 6ft trailer with the tiny 650kg car on it.

I can recommend Phils tool  hire in Welshpool for the trailer hire. They were good as gold and really friendly. good day rates and got me a trailer next day no bother

would (and probably will) hire from them again for shite collection eleventy million out of ten for them, didn’t give a shit my tow vehicle was 22 years old and looks shite, makes me smile in this day and age

What size is the centre hole in the alloys? I have these if you want them. They fit in a 64mm hole. PM if you want them.20240710_210835.jpg.db150dbf7bdf986b273ef2347a7c3f40.jpg

Check if the clutch releases when you press it. If it's stuck remove the flywheel whilst the wing is off.

EDIT

Ah! no flywheel, I missed that.

That makes it easier*

The wheels look like Cosmics

They are indeed cosmics

Those cosmics won't fit the front if it's got discs and calipers though.

B reg should have discs, but I think a few really early one might still have been drums.

My first car was a B reg Mayfair that my dad bought new.

It cost £3850. Funny what you remember isn't it.

E was for economy, as apparently it had the economy tuned lump from the metro HLE

That is a really cool dashboard.

Any chance of a pic of the whole dash please?

I agree, but the short toggles must be tricky to use so close to the longer ones. Note the rally-style map-reading lamp with it's flexible head clipped to the dash. I have one of those somewhere that my Dad had for road rallies BITD.

That looks like a 1960s go-faster dash, so it is possibly transplanted from an earlier car.  I bet the wiring behind it is horrid, if there is any.

IIRC the City E had the A plus engine.  That engine is a normal A series.  The capacity  is usually embossed on the block  low down near the fuel pump.

Any ideas what’s been done though, I know absolutely nothing about minis or their engines at this point

I will get one when I’m back home, we are having a well deserved weekend in the Cotswolds

(except I keep looking at my phone for mini parts and to read autoshite)

Lovely! About time that there was another mini on here :-)

What is your plan for it?

That’s a night fine offer thanks, only issue is I only have 2 of the comics and we want to use 12” wheels not 10’s

Weld it up, get it running happily and it will become the other half’s daily as the diesel maestro is getting a bit tired and parts are very hard to find, it makes more sense to daily the mini

The dash is a weird one, it’s just two bits of flat black panel screwed on either side of the original big central speedo. I agree it’s definitely and earlier engine, as can be seen from earlier non verto clutch

IIRC Mini e is 80's? Overlap with Metro, hence A plus engine. Going by the looks of it, many things may have occurred. @Minimad5 or @Tommyboy12 might know?

The dash could have been bought as full width or half from all good accessory shops (such as Longlife!) Made by, or for, a firm like autoplas, or paddy hopkirk. Typical 70s upgrade* stuff.

I did think that. It’s ok, they are knackered anyway 😂

84G = 849
98G = 998
10G = 1098
12G = 1275

What about

970, 997 & 1070? The 1071 (I know) personally was an excellent balanced engine.
