jollyfkr2 Posted March 27 Posted March 27 Again, not my car, belongs to a friend who took it on when her Mum died. She lives in Hackney and can’t park it there, not ULEZ exempt so parked near me and just never uses it. The MOT is up at the end of April and a look at the advisory list on the current and previous MOT will need attending to for the next one. It hasn’t been looked at for this year. She has an emotional attachment to the car so doesn’t want to scrap it and would rather it go to someone who wants to do the work, price is negotiable. It’s 1999, done less than 100k and being a turbo Auto, goes very well. I believe it has good history but it’s in the car and I’m waiting for the keys! Joey spud, djimbob, pilninggas and 26 others 29
jmsguzzi Posted March 27 Posted March 27 Some inspiration for anyone thinking about taking this on: https://www.carandclassic.com/l/C1693371 Wish I could as an S Turbo of this shape would probably be my ideal car, but I'm already two Foresters deep and can't take a project on. Very rare in pre facelift guise. Vantman and jollyfkr2 2
cms206 Posted March 27 Posted March 27 My current London adventure finishes on April 11th and can do northward movements if required; had I the £400 quid I'd be tempted myself! Flat4, jollyfkr2 and twosmoke300 3

wuvvum Posted March 27 Posted March 27 Definitely a bargain at that money, even with the work it needs. I'm almost tempted but I really can't take on another car needing welding at the moment. jollyfkr2 1

bangernomics Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Could you grab a few pics of the crusty areas, not for me but a pal who has a fetish for them and would likely buy it and fix/run it. Gzongenflatch Flat4 1

DodgeRover Posted March 29 Posted March 29 MOT history isn't that horrific, if it was that crusty it would have been getting fails, sounds more like arse covering.

Back_For_More Posted March 31 Posted March 31 I have the manual 99 turbo and these are just fantastic....... I didn't see this or I'd have siezed it as a reserve - too many cars or not 😁 Enjoy Delux - best of luck with it. That CnC at 5500 though! I'm off to clean mine out and wash it 😉 delux 1

delux Posted April 11 Posted April 11 Picking it up Thursday 18th, was the cheapest day for Easyjet flight, LOL! If it makes it back ok I'll take it to work on Friday and make a list on it. If I expect the worst I'll hopefully be pleasantly surprised. (Dusts off welding mask...) Cavcraft, Coprolalia, jollyfkr2 and 4 others 7

delux Posted April 19 Posted April 19 Before I start, Mrs Delux has many talents. Documenting a roadtrip with a camera sadly isnt one of them! Strap in for a feast of pics of a depressed looking Subaru being dragged across a miserable country... Preparation is the key. Suitably dressed... Stupid O'clock in the morning arrival at los Aeropuerto... Deal done (thanks @jollyfkr2 ) Currency exchanged (Thanks Nancy) Handover complete (thanks Les from BL Transverse Mini specialists) Off to a place familiar to all Subaru drivers... The petrol station! Cobham services on the M25, is it really that bumpy all the way round? Primative satnav, basic but accurate... Never miss an opportunity to visit the UKs best race track, the M6 Toll road... Keele services M6, topping up coffee and tea levels Tebay services, was mugged in the shop as Mrs Delux insisted on 2 jars of £5 chilli jam! White van mans mate admires the luxury leather interior... Topping up KFC levels in Livingston, Scotland... Back home! Nearly 500 trouble free miles jostling between works vans and fat crossovers To everyone else we were 2 giggling idiots bombing about on a rough old £400 banger but to us we were breezing along in our leather armchairs in a smooth quiet, very comfy space. This car is genuinely far better than it looks! Usually, when commuting these sort of distances I'm in an ultramodern, soul-less blob with a couple of hundred miles on the clock. None of them comes close to the way this car feels. I am very grateful for those who made this possible. In the next action packed installment we discuss whats wrong with it! jmsguzzi, Semi-C, Coprolalia and 29 others 31 1
Marshall2810 Posted April 19 Posted April 19 @delux first off congrats on your purchase and epic collection journey, and now proven reliability of the forester. Looking forward to seeing how you get on and hope you're pleasantly surprised. Assume most of the suspension stuff is readily available if needed and perhaps the sub frame will clean up? 🙏 Mods can you move this to the main autoshite page please? Would make it much easier to follow progress. delux and Stinkwheel 2
jmsguzzi Posted April 19 Posted April 19 SF Forester = the peak of automotive travel Looking forward to seeing how this progresses, mine is equally as tatty but drives spot on, I think they suit looking a bit rough and ready. delux 1
delux Posted April 19 Posted April 19 Ok, so initial inspection this morning. Just to get an idea of the size of task. Before I go on, this isnt a post about me wingeing about the state of the car. Its not a dig at anyone who has owned or worked on the car up to this point. It was bought as a very cheap car that will need work to get it through another MOT. I was prepared for the worst! And it genuinely isnt that bad... In this pic of my finger you can see the underside in the background, LOL! When I last worked at Subaru, they recalled Legacy models up to 12 years old to replace brake pipes, we done several far worse than this! Sill (mentioned at last MOT) OSR turret requires pokey screwdriver assesment... Active anti corrosion system! LOL! Usual leaky rocker covers... I will be sticking a timing belt on it anyway but I will change the cam and crank seals when I am in there but yeah, rocker gaskets are on the list... Gearbox was a bit harsh when kicking down, oil level ok and didnt smell too burnt. Transmission relatively leak free. New gasket and filters please... Not the most flattering pic but flanges look strong enough to survive disassembly to change the cone... Mismatched rear shockers (think they are Impreza ones rather than Forester) and tired bushes explain cars 'saggy arse' stance! Not sure about aerodynamic modifications, may put it back to standard... If I can find a decent replacement bumper I may treat it to reversing sensors... Can only find US spec ones with amber reflector so if anyone knows a source it will save me having to deal with the pondlife... It needs a good clean/service/wiper blades/air freshener too but I'd do that on any new addition to the fleet. So whats the plan? I have a few things to put right on the Cube and get it thru an MOT then its up for sale. That has to get priority as I have space for 3 cars but currently have 4 cars! After that I'll do the service/MOT stuff on the Forester. On last years MOT there were advisories for corrosion on the rear subframe, front wishbones etc. They are all solid so a clean and repaint should do them. If I can find a decent rear bumper before I finish all that I think its worth sorting the rust/dents on the rest and having the wheels redone. 'Concrete effect' wheels have yet to become popular. If I go down that route I'll be looking for decent money for it. Its not that I am greedy, I'm just bad for overdoing it and overspending fixing things no-one else would bother their arse over. If I cant find a good bumper it will be up for sale as is, working on the principal whoever buys it is gonna chuck it about offroad and bump into things anyway! LOL! andrew e, AnnoyingPentium, Pat Earrings and 12 others 15

delux Posted October 6 Posted October 6 Stuffs been done! As the Forester has been relaxing in my lock up since I got it, it was understandably grumpy when I tried to waken it. Topped up the battery with fresh electricity but the groan from the fuel pump was suspiciously missing. Emptied a packet of 'RCM fuel pump uprgrade' ito it and viola! Fanbelt screetching, its sorry arse was dragged into Delux global headquarters... Started the service with new plugs, filters etc. Because this involved removing some bits, they had a go round the dishwasher... Please dont tell Mrs. Delux I know how to use the dishwasher or the Forester fixing budget may have to be redirected! As it was in the workshop I was able to carry out a 'Pokey screwdriver' assesment of the rear decay. The OSR wheelarch was a grim and depressing place... and rear bumper looks like it may be the fastest bumper removal I've ever done... So I was chuffed to bits to see the NSR only needs a good wire brush and paint... More soon! HillmanImp, bangernomics, Schaefft and 18 others 21

Anyone notice the ironically positioned 'OK Subaru' window sticker? Took trims off later today and they dont look too bad inside. Probably caught it in time! If thats a recent pic, is that load blind for sale? 😄
andy18s Posted October 6 Posted October 6 It's a typical used Subaru for sale advert here in Bg,where the sellers still think they're worth a fortune... delux 1
delux Posted October 27 Posted October 27 Been working on the old clunker again! This week I have been mostly replacing crank and cam seals, timing belts and water pumpers... and leaky rocker covers repaired. As someone who has to spend their week working on horrible Renault engined Nissans I was amazed how clean it was inside the rocker covers, remembering this is a cheap car with 100,000 miles on it Clearly well serviced! Anyway, all looks a bit more slick now. So things were going well then I decided to change the PCV valve. Its a Y piece in the breather system. Now I've fixed the oil leaks I dont want them happening again and these are supposed to be changed during a big service (although few people bother cos its burried deep between the intercooler and inlet manifold) Like the overkeen oaf that I am I charged in and broke the elbow that comes out the turbo intake pipe. Prolly the worst pipe to break in this area because you need to take the inlet manifold off to change it! Arsebiscuits! 5 minute job turns into a 'kin rebuild! Stepping away from the engine bay I done a 'feel better' job. Managed to find a cheap, new NOS sidelight on the bay Still, cant help thinking the depressed front end is developing a bit of a snigger! bangernomics, Cookiesouwest, beko1987 and 8 others 11

delux Posted November 10 Posted November 10 Update time! Underneath a lot less 'oil-leaky'... Up top a lot more 'Putbacktogethery'... Next, tackling the rear! Welding, suspension bushes, probable brakes. Better get the swear jar emptied 1st! It will have to wait though as my usually reliable Impreza took the huff and threw a bit of exhaust at me...
