If you ended up around 24-25 mpg I'd say that's very reasonable. That kind of thirst wouldn't put me off - it's miles better than the old Rover V8.

I was seriously babying it to get that. 65mph on the flat might return 25mpg but as you go above that it starts getting thirsty. At 80ish on the way back from Scotland I was getting 20 on the nose pretty much. The old rover v8s are thirsty but I think one of the saving grace for this car is the 6hp26 gearbox. Theyre quite a modern gearbox for the age they are achieving lockup in 1st gear etc. not far off manual MPG.

Yep, the decent gearbag will be helping. The 4hp22 in my Classic is a bloody thirsty old thing, only locks up at 56ish and contributes heavily to the dipsomania.

I thought these had a shit GM gearbox that failed with disappointing predictability and expense?

The older ones did. Mainly the 3.0tdi. chocolate garbage.

These zf boxes are pretty solid tbf. They have some issues but not terminal normally.

Don't be too hasty. I went to work today which is all back roads and top speed of 40 and I had clear run at it. 17mpg which is what you will see round town if you're careful I imagine. I'll stick to the 20mpg in my XJR for my commuting. My eco car.

Some work has been done on the range.
First off the passenger front door lock wasn't working on the central locking. New lock mechanism and less than an hour to fit and it's all working again. Happy.
New rear tyres on the back for a grand total of £60. Bought a tyre for £35 off someone and the spare had a branny spanker on it. £25 for someone to mount the new tyre and swap over the spare. Had a look at the suspension components and by god they're beefy. Happy.
Got a wheel alignment tomorrow so we will see if that's out.
I also pulled back the sill covers to take a look and it's genuinely mint. I've seen some horrors on the l322 forums over the past few days and the rust is well hidden by the covers so I was a little nervy. After taking a look though they're solid and no surface rust. Only rust is on the arches which I still need to get a quote for that. Happy.

I think I may have to replace a suspension strut though as jacking the car up may have upset it. Front offside sounds like it's got a leak and caused the suspension to have a fit. A cycle of the ignition and it seems happier but I am going to have a look at it later to see if it's dropped. £260 for a new one and not hard to fit so I'm not concerned.

New strut fitted! Not much hassle, lower pinch bolt took 20/30mins of heating and turning and whacking to get it out but other than that not a bad job. Quick drive and it's all fixed and also driving much nicer. That shock absorber was blown and bouncing about. Didn't get any picture because F***ing freezing and dark. All in I'd say it took 2 hours including gathering all the tools in and out the house. Very happy.

Been driving great but getting a horrible grumbling when braking. Let's have a lo... Oops
Anyone know where's best to buy from? Looking for decent brand but nowhere seems to stock them? Tried parts in motions, jgs 4x4, gsf, might have to try autodoc and just not be able to drive it for approx 178 years while I wait for postage.

I only use advanced factors for Land Rover parts now and I get through a lot. Never had any issues with parts from them and always fast delivery.

And the results are in. Worst pads I've ever seen...
As you can imagine it stops better now with no noise. Nice result.
Also found the other front shock/air strut has been replaced so that's both front struts that are new. Happy days.

Next update:
Fed up thinking about my collapsing house so decided I will do some RR stuff. Ordered a service kit for it as it is due and it's got a tick. I'll be honest it sounds more exhaust manifold tick or possibly even a spark tick but the oil is old and definitely needs changing so I will start with that. Going to put some liqui moly lifter additive in also as I've read some good reviews. I've gone for some good oil but it is pricey! Oh well it's only money.

Exciting bonus content. I think my mpg could be better still! I believe Ive found an air leak. See video for my findings. You can also hear the tick. Uploaded as YouTube short as the file was quite large. I look forward to sorting both the engine noises and getting some extra bhp and mpg!

I could smell coolant when driving home from Asda, so pulled over and found this (under the engine cover)

Got home thankfully with plenty of coolant left, and gave it a poke 

Face, eyes and mouth full of hot coolant 😅

Tonga green I believe or possibly epsom green? That mpg is similar to mine around town but I would think that amount of unmetered air will be robbing a few mpg I'll be honest!

Small update. New pcv valve on and no more leaks. Happy days.

Next job is the service but the fluids haven't arrived. I was busy doing a brake job on a Porsche today so wouldnt of had the time anyway. I suspect I can just raise the and crawl underneath with no need for jacking it up. Will be the first time I've been able to do that!

Service done today. Old oil removed came to about 6 litres and took 8.5 litres of oil including liquimoly lifter additive. The oil was very dark and definitely due to changing. The oil filter was a blue print with a date code of 2017 and rust forming around the rim... Hmmm.
Previously it had what sounded like a lifter tick or possibly a manifold leak. After doing this it's now running much quieter see clip

Happy with it all and becoming a little attached to the thing now! Next job is a track rod end that has a little bit of play in it. If I do end up having to sell to fix my house I'll be very sad to see it go but glad to know I've done some maintenance that it definitely needed.

Such a lovely car. I'm putting up with the 15/16 mpg around the houses as I really do like driving it. It's much more of a mile mucher than a b road blast of course but it does it really well. Also got greeted with a classic parking next to me at a clients today. Shameless picture op.

Not sure if it's worth making a new thread on this, but as you all know this brilliant machine has been in my ownership for a few months.

Since getting it off @DirtyDaily I've replaced every suspension arm on the front and back, fitted a brand new pair of front Pirelli matching tyres, genuine oil filler (due to air leak) and many other bits and bobs, have a few pictures 

Obviously all the above were replaced with brand new items (as seen stuffed in the large box of parts)

It's a brilliantly comfortable thing to drive, but starting to hanker after a XJ or similar, so do feel free to P.M me if anyone has a big & comfortable Auto they may want to swap.

I want it back but don't want it back.

It's the same but better, as it's pretty much all new steering / suspension wise, new ignition coils (waiting for plugs to arrive) ... and loads more. Drives spot on
