Got some time on the Range Rover today after spending last weekend painting the van.

The only not strictly necessary work I did was to needle gun and repaint the bits of rear subframe which are only accessible with the tank out.

Everything back together, checked twice, fuel system primed about 20 times, and then the Laplander battery swapped on at the last moment as the just charged RR one still didn't have the guts to crank it.

The first few seconds of cranking watching the fuel rail pressure sticking at 600kPa, then it started climbing quickly.

And it lives!

Exhausts etc. Refitted today, and took it for a blat around the farm (sans plates as I don't have any yet!)

By God it shifts.

Immediate white smoke and restricted performance. Seems to be a TADTS - when removing the intakes on the 4.4 you inevitably disturb some vac lines for the left turbo. It's cooling off tonight and I'll reattach tomorrow and try again.

It hasn't moved under its own power since Feb so it took a bit to clean the brakes up too but it's rolling along silently now.

If all behaves it'll be time to put the back seats in, give it a damn good clean and service, then figure out what to do with the upper tailgate rust and overspray on the bonnet.

Won't be too long!

Sure enough found a dislodged vacuum hose near the high pressure fuel pump, which is for the left turbo. Reattached and no more smoke!

Unfortunately getting the occasional 'fuel pressure too high' and 'fuel pressure too low' with a second of each other, which puts it into limp mode. Live values look fine.

I fitted used rail pressure sensor and pressure regulator as the originals were likely full of swarf. Turns out the later 4.4 TDV8 which donated those parts may be set to run at a different pressure, so I'll double check and replace with new as necessary.

After that I think it's mainly cosmetic - one wheel in particular is corroded, the bonnet has blown lacquer and the usual upper tailgate rust.

The 5 year old side steps (replaced as the originals were rotten at less than 10 years old) will also be going in the bin as they didn't like me using them to wash the roof today.
