Is Autoshite a Club?

I'd say it was. If I meet someone with an old heap, I always say "I'm a member of Autoshite" to see if they are and to tell them they should be if they arent already contributing. I dont say "I read and occasionally contribute minor observations to this web forum about old cars" as that takes too long. So I'd say member, and member equals club IMHO.Perhaps we should start issuing identity cards?1)- Web Name2)- Rust colour3)- Place of birth of Current Shiteetc

Hear hear. But car clubs do get a bit like that dont they? It all depends on the founder I suppose, if they are a bit up tight naturally then that pettiness is going to spill over into other areas of their lives. I've often read stories about club members who get expelled because their 1981 Escort XR3 doesnt have the original radio that it had from the factory or whatever. Shame really. Luckily in the UK if one club acts like a tw*t, theres always another one.

Cars and parts sold through owners' clubs always seem to be hideously overpriced. Complete cars in particular seem to be advertised at eye-watering prices, even if the seller has boasted in a previous issue about getting the car for £50 and only needing a bulb for its MOT.

i'd say autoshite was more exclusive than your 'other club' getting in here is harder :lol::lol: i've made alot of friends here will be sad to go :twisted:

we are going for an interview down in the audedepartment (in the mountains), which involves looking after a 8 bed chateau and grounds, in exchange for a 4 bed house, it'll be the only chance we have to save some real money and get a place of our own...

so for afew months yes be no interweb  but if it results in €400 notes saved each month it can only be good

Anyway, the problem with car clubs is that the vast majority haven't adapted that well to the internet age.

Fifteen years ago, if you ran an old car and wanted parts / help / more cars or whatever then you were probably best off joing the club. But that isn't the case now as the internet has enabled locating cars, parts and knowledge to be far easier.

The difference is I suppose is that 'clubs' organise events - shows or whatever for their members whereas most internet forums don't and are just a place for like minded enthusiasts to come together to discuss stuff. A lot of clubs still seem to live in the past and concentrate on producing a magazine, holding a few shows and charging a subscription fee which is essentially what they have been doing since the 1970s whilst trying to ignore the fact that whatever they do is done better and free elsewhere.

The difference becomes less distinct when forums grow and start organising successful and significant events (I'm thinking of RR here). So in terms of what 'clubs' do then I'd say yes Autoshite is a club as most of what a club does is covered here. Certainly when / if we have the Autoshite Great Summer Meet then I'd say you could class this as a club.

The bonus for me is that unlike a traditional club, we have a lot greater variety here. As much as I like old Renaults, a field full gets a bit boring whereas the variety we have is more interesting. Similarly, wandering around all the cars at RRG09 was a lot more interesting than seeing the equivalent number but of the same marque if you see what I mean.

Need a hell of a lot of childish bickering / squabling before you could call this a club.

getting a Russian bride and staying in New Zealand...

Sounds like a pretty good lifestyle choice to me.

I wouldn't have said Autoshite was a club. More a type of institution.

As Groucho Marx said, "I wouldn't want to join any club that would have me as a member - except Autoshite" **possibly not an actual quote

Shall we invite Austin Towers back then?

I'm weary of formal clubs nowadays. People take it all too seriously.

Or the RAC's busiest day of the year :D

Jury’s still out for me. I don’t know enough people with it to make a judgement. So far:

1 for

1 against

1 activating this weekend

EDIT: 1 planning to activate this weekend

Clubs have constitutions, rules committees, meetings and always end up like those little sea creatures that reproduce by splitting up into two smaller but otherwise identical copies of the original. If autoshite becomes a club I will leave *

*or more likely set up a smaller but otherwise identical forum

It certainly feels like a club , Ive not been on here that long and by my own admition i dont contribute enough , Once i sort a photobucket then things will hopefully change , Beginning to feel like i sort of know some of you , Deffo not a club as such but i feel i sort of belong and do like popping in every night ( cue getting banned now for non contribution )

LOL.Particularly prevalent in Ford Granada / Cortina circles, the situation with which always makes me think of the Judean People's Front bit of Life of Brian.
