Merk 300D…. Legend or leg end….

J reg ( non turbo), 180k miles, drove really nicely, with surprising amount of poke…. I know they’re not that economical, but presume they’ll run on veg oil?

It’s an old Mercedes diesel, taxi drivers across the World have depended on them for decades and still do in some countries.

Yep mechanical Bosch injection pump will run Veg oil no problem, just carry some spare fuel filters if it has run on pump diesel up until now.

A 300D can’t be that cheap, I don’t get buying one for a reasonable sum then potentially bollocksing it up running it on cooking fat.

The mechanical Bosch injection pumps are lubricated by the engine oil not the fuel.  So you cannot break it by using SVO/WVO.

Worst that will happen is leaky fuel delivery o rings on the injection pump and the need to spend a  few quid on fresh fuel filters when they get restricted after the veg oil cleans the fuel system out. 70 odd pence a litre saving is not to be sniffed at. Plus legend has it non fossil fuels are actually environmentally friendly.

That injection pump is well known for being able to pump grease if you ask it to.  The potential risk of Borkage on SVO, especially clean virgin SVO is very low indeed.

Just buy it. Look at fuel tank for leaks, o rings will need doing if veg as will most of the lines eventually.

They make a nice sound and do the same mpgs at 60 as the do at 80. Will tow wonderfully, hopefully an auto.

I’d got it in my head a decent 300D would be £4-5k minimum.

I wouldn't have thought there's any around for £700 sort of money either!

Even a rough one is a worth something to an exporter.

Regardless of cost, a w124 300d will smash fuck out of whatever lard/oil based product you put in it.

I used this Soya oil in mine..

Couple of glowplug heats and away you go. The Bosch pumps will push lard.

Just keep a spare fuel filter in the glovebox as the veg can clean the lines if the car has never been run on it before.
