Travelling with a camera: my photo scans from the early 90's

Spent another weekend in rainy London and did my usual stop-start-photo thing. Explored parts of West London and headed north up to the A406. Unfortunately no Alfa 90's or Mazda 818 seen, but a few of these are reasonably interesting.

These were sold at the same time as the drifters hero AE86 models, but far fewer survive as they're FWD.

Yet another 2 Bluebird estates - they look a lot older than they are, which is why I probabily single these out to photograph above the more common hatchback/saloon models....

but this was one of the earliest ones I've seen recently - I vaguely recall seeing some C reg ones about.

I like these, they have an element of mystery machine styling to them.

Tragically not only has its lost all its Datsun badges but gained a tasteless font on its Northern Irish 'private' plate.

Another model which seems to last well are these Lancer/Colt type things - shame the previous 2 generations didn't last as long.

Same basic model, but saloons and estates were badged Lancer - and of course the saloon became a Proton, of which I see loads of them - mostly in faded blue or pink.

Non widebody versions are quite thin on the ground now.

Original shaped RX7's seem to be more common thats its Porscheseque replacement. Neat shape though.

Probabily never seen any mud in its life, which might exaplin why it still survives.

The original Giulietta - these were first introduced in the mid 50's. Must have been a well ahead of its time in terms of engineering.

Always loads of 500's knocking around - original diplomat plates on the blue one - I seldom see cars with those types of plates these days.

...but this wins for the best Fiat of the weekend. Its absolutely finished. The other side is far worse, sporting rear and front damage, as well as axle damage and extensive rust. I can only assume its used as a shed.

 

Next, the French. Unusually heavy Renault & Peugeot content, as I ignored most of the 2CVs today.

In GTL spec these were quite desirable once. I had one exactly the same as this, but it had orange seats. The rear suspension collapsed.

Shame the 504 is a coupe and not a saloon, but it is RHD. Quite a high probability that these 2 cars came from the same dealer but 14 years apart.

And this was a find and a half too but its a GTI version, not a pov model - that makes 2 saloons compared to about 15 estates I seen.

As per, fantastic spots. That Cortina looks like its been sitting there for decades, and that Fiat van will no doubt die soon. The Subaru really appeals to me, used to see alot of them but they have become incredibly scarce now.

Great spotting indeed, but the Chevy Caprice up near the top of the page is no more a Caprice than I am... looks more like an El Camino to me, but it could even be a Chevelle or Malibu that's been.... modified.

 

(edit) Actually, upon closer inspection, it seems to be RHD. Could it be a Holden Ute, or a South African Chevrolet equivalent?

Jeez, what a great set of spots! Impossible to pick a favourite... well, maybe the oldest Minx. I'd love one (with an Isuzu badge :D)

 

Or the Bianchina. Or maybe the Dino Spyder. Or the Giulietta. Hold on, I almost forgot the 190SL...

What a collection. Those are GR32. That Fiat Dino tintop is truly a thing of beauty.

Great great pics. I hope when I go down to London next I get chance to do some spotting..

 

I think I may have spotted this when I was down there, was it somewhere in the vicinity* of Earls Court?

Thats exactly where the Fiat is Gompo - that area of London always has a surprising number of old cars lurking. Cheers for the correction eddyramrod, it doesn't look like a Caprice at all, so I should have paid a little more attention to the assumption.

 

Here's a modest selection of car at a freebie show near Milton Keynes - I had to pop over to grim Luton last Sunday so decided to check out the show for an hour in the morning. The variety was surreal - any car both new and old was allowed to be displayed - but they charged you to do so but there was a reasonable number of older cars - again nothing too rare but as freebies go it was ok.

Ooo, I'd missed your last London update while we were away. Some of those are very familiar. In fact I've spotted the Mustang in the past. Its a genuine Shelby - the bloke used to have work carried out now and again at the resto shop I worked part time at for a bit.

Nice. Although.... [anorak] that 5 Gordini Turbo doesn't look quite right. Fairly sure you couldn't get a red one with red interior [/anorak].

 

Also, and of little relevance to anything other than my stomach, whenever I'm on my way up the M1 I tend to pop into the Tesco in MK to break the journey. Partly because they have a huge range of hot snacks to sustain me on my travels.....

I dont think Ive ever been to a free carshow, so thats a good haul! Im presuming there was a heavier Vauxhall/Bedford presence due to location.

So whats the deal with GLS Cortinas? There was one at Newbury classic car show which is apparently local to me, but apparently it being an 83 Y reg makes it super late and unusual.

Well yes, the Sierra had already been launched. IIRC the GLS was largely a suspension upgrade on the existing GL, to give it a more "sporty" feel. My GL didn't have it, but was a sweet drive anyway. I think tauter suspension would have spoiled it.

Not very likely unless it was ex South Africa. To me it is a Holden 1 ton cab/chassis with an aftermarket rear end. Grille is Holden Statesman.

The SA connection..Statesman sedan was sold in SA as Chevrolet Caprice.

The 2CV chaps had their annual meeting close to Winchester over the weekend - and seeing its about 20 minutes drive away it would have been rude not to have checked it out. It was held at Sparsholt College, a specialist college for Land-based Industries - beautifully positioned at the top of the Hampshire countryside. The event had a slight element of a festival to it - maybe the whiff of portaloos, fields with dry dung, grim incoming weather and several hungover teenagers helped create that illusion.

 

I have a soft spot for these cars, having owned one a few years back. The typical owner of the 2CV is lot harder to categorise these days, in France Citroen always had a wider type of demographic buying them, but in the UK I guess a certain type of person would be associated with the car.

RHD versions so we can assume that these would be Slough built cars. When the factory stooped producing cars, the UK had to wait until 1974 for the updated model to arrive.

And then over to its sister car - this was the car for those who couldn't live with its basic spec of the 2CV - not a hugely different but I guess a little easier to live with - this was first introduced into the UK in 1968 - Love to know if any of those early cars survived.

The 2CV did outlive the Dyane, by about 6 years - this is one of the last models sold here.

 

Several Amis were in attendance, including a van version which featured earlier in my thread at the GS day last year.

Based on 2CV and AX bits - its quite a convincing looking design - I wouldn't be surprised whether a italian design house had something to do with it. Could so easily be badged a Fiat or Daf.

Unusually asides from a 1990 Metro, the only non Classic Citroen at the event. I had to leave early, so I missed quite a few cars coming in. Maybe some of our 2CV fanatics caught the other days.
