What I did want! update.

I've sold my 2cv :cry: Could do with another car, something interesting/quirkey would be nice, but a bit more bland than the deux chevaux, so the locals don't pick on it, and local garages won't turn their noses up at it.The boyf has already mentioned a van, for any van-type missions, but maybe an estate would be better.Really it just has to take me to the supermarket occassionally and take me and the dog to the beach, for everything else theres the posh car.Is a 70's car going to be as much as a pain in the ass as the 2cv sometimes was? What do we reckon? I have around about £500 to spend.

My recent 70s cars:-1. Citroen CX - plenty of trouble.2. Citroen GS - a little trouble.3. Fiat 127 - almost no trouble at all!

You want something from the 1970s?

How about Peugeot 304 estate? more conventional than a Citroen Ami/GS so shouldn't scare any grease monkies and not a massive tank of a car like a 504.

For van duties how about the baby Fiat 900?

Since this kind of topic is pretty much an invitation for people to vicariously live out their individual preferences under the guise of 'offering suggestions', I'm not even going to pretend that that's not what I'm about to do. I am obsessed with small, runaboutish stuff from the '70s at the moment, so see if any of these work for you:

I've been looking for one of these, thats exactly what I'd love.

The Fiesta MK1 was always my pet hate, but just lately I've been warming to them.

I knew it  They were made when Pugs were tough as old boots too so shouldn't give you too many problems with a bit of luck but finding one may be a struggle.

A 305 estate or van might be easier to find. Not as charming as a 304 or a 2CV obviously, but you can get them with decent engines including 1.9 petrols and diesels.

Brilliant cars, I learnt to drive in one.

Of all the suggestions so far, a Fiesta Mk1 will be easiest to find, get bits for, and not scare off local garages. Not sure how good the ride is on them though, compared to French stuff.

Sod it, get a proper full sized van. Mk5 transit is within your range, and the shock tactics of a woman driving a van is great! I assume you are female, which is wrong of me with a name like mine!

IN B4 FOCUSFiesta Mk1 makes sense to me too. They can rot a bit but parts shouldn't be too much bother.

You would struggle to find a Mk1 fez for £500 though.

Why not go the whole hog and suggest a Ford Cargo? Imagine all the dogs and shopping she could fit in the back.

That does look a good buy for the money, specially with T&T but will it go up at the last minute?

WTF is wrong with thet Polo?? Its a cut'n'shut!! Mk2 ish rear and a Mk1 front on a T plate??!!

Posted

I think it's a photoshop effort, you can spot the regular Polo rear window length and profile on the other side.

Peugeot 504 or 505?Clearly I'm projecting my wants on to you. There's a 505 around here for sale that I'm itching for. Apparently they run forever!

More bland than a 2CV, practical, reliable, cheap to run, quirky, reasonably easy to find a decent yet cheap example? Citroen C15 surely?

Or do I want this?

I drive a van all day for work, so I'm not sure if I'd like the luxury of back windows!

'Course you do!

Nerdy anorak alert and all that but they don't look like the original seats to me, they look a bit 'posh' compared to the standard dog plop affair you got in cheaper models.

Still, an early facelift one and looks a nice motor for the money.

Ford Cargo idea a winner though, you either have to dress like a horsey type though or get your other half to have the bottom part of his hair shorter than the top and have chevrons on the bottom of the doors. Oh, and ALWAYS carry an Irish bloke with a shirt and tie, tweed jacket and wellies on to do the talking whilst the kids nick everything that's nailed down or not.

And change your name to Louise Mc O'Dougal.

As a total contrast to the 2cv and staying true to the estate car that thinks its a van idea how about a volvo 245? maybe getting a bit thin on the ground now but might be worth thinking about.

The ideal car for you is of course the Toyota Starlet* * Actually that would still be a pretty good choice even if you had made a few hundred more posts :)
