THE GUBBERMINT ALWAYS KNOWS BEST

1. Decided that what the Sceptre needs is a new, bigger battery.2. Went to the lock-up, measured the space available.3. Went to the local branch of a well known purveyor of motoring items and bicycles.4. Shook head and sucked air through teeth when I saw the price of their batteries.5. Decided to go to a motor factor 'some time' instead.

After making sod-all progress on the Peerless for months I need to get things moving.

Lots of little jobs which take forever, but at least it makes the car look better which is something that hasn't happened for a while.

1) Fit petrol filler cap. Should be a doddle, but while I'm in the boot holding the filler pipe I can't be on the outside screwing the filler cap on. Hmmmm. After taking most of the filler pipe off the tank I can get it held inline then fit the filler cap from the outside. Woo-hoo, it looks better already. Well it does to me!

2) Fit front indicators. I've done all the wiring before but I still needed to make up the connectors, drill the body to hold it in place and get a decent earth connection in place (fibrelgass body). It took about an hour and a half to do both, but it looks better now, and they all work, which is more than most old Lucas systems do.

3) Fit front bumpers. Easy job, 15 minutes and they're both on.

4) Now all the wiring is done I can fit the ---P--- radiator grille. Finding screws to fit is a pain, but half an hour later and it's on.

5) Front numberplate. I like the original one, although it might be too faded to pass the MoT.

6) Wipers on. I've built up the mechanism from scratch and fitted all the wheelboxes before, put the wipers on to make it look nice. What a shame they're not wired up yet...

good to see some progress on the Peerless, such a bloody lovely motor. looks really good with all the bits on the front too, good job. How much is there left to do?

It seems like there's not much. Until I get in the garage and start doing it, then it seems like there's loads :? Wire up the wipers and washers next so that should be straightforward. Then it's put the doors on a bit better. That should allow it to be MoTd and I think then it'll have to be sold.Other than the dashboard, the interior still needs everything, although the original seats are still there.

What not paint the numberplate? Mask off the border and digits then spray away with some satin black. Nicer to use the original one than buy new.

It's got a nice mottled effect on the aluminium so I'd need to get rid of it all with a wire brush before painting. It's probably the only original bit of the car left :D

Was tipped off by a bloke about a local vehicle which may interest me, initially he thought it was like my Galant but I thought I'd go down with him for a look anyway just out of curiousity.

Turned out to be one of these Lancers:

Looked fairly tidy, rubbish trims and the like, seems like some proper old boy special. Was too late to knock on the door and enquire about it, dunno whether I should go down during the day at some point. It wouldn't go unnoticed in the local taxi newsletter I'm sure, there'd be some headline about the Hirst Cabs "aggressive fleet expansion strategy" or some such.

Not until some of my other stuff is sorted. Still patiently waiting for the 626 to come back from the garage (with a fresh cambelt and an MOT). I think the Laurel's water pump is approaching its demise too, so that'll want looking at.

Hey Seth, I always like to see your vehicles coping with everyday life. That picture is superb.Today, I've made a start on sanding down one of those Galant steels provided to me by Mr_B0vril. It's going back on the road soon I hope, just needs the water pump doing.

Had a run down to East Sussex this morning on a rusty shite collection mission. Note non shite in the showroom!

Did you take a look in the showroom? While they generally have a good reputation they are very well known for asking TOP MONEY for their wares.Good work on the mission anyway.

I've been trying to crack on with my Series 1 Landy as I want it at our wedding in July. Bloody weather isn't helping though :(

She looks like this now, tucked up under a sheet although I did manage to get the rear wheels and brakes off between showers on Tuesday afternoon. Just had the master cylinder and wheel cylinders bored out and sleeved with stainless; not cheap but cheaper than what robbing "specialists" want for N.O.S stuff for these :x

Once the weather gets better I can paint the chassis, fit the brakes and new pipes and start putting her back together.

The other LR just keeps on going, done 350 miles in the last two days no probz. Audi needs taxing (will have to wait a month), Mini I haven't decided what to do yet, either rebuild the carb on it or fit a bigger/different one.

Trouble is I keep getting distracted by steam shite.

Well, I appear to be spending my new-shite fund on fixing the ones I've got. The Renault works, but has no MoT, and I'm not sure what the MoT man will make of the rot on the rear wheelarches. Must be within 30cm of a seatbelt or susp mounting I would have thought. The 2CV has had a whole heap of work this week, but still smells. I'm hoping that a thrash around Buxton this weekend will burn off any nasty residues, though I have clocked up over 50 miles in it (at speed) already. Meh. Window open then!I got the BX serviced last Wednesday. It's already done 600 miles. HEADLINE - Rear screenwash is still not working. Where's me fuse wire? The Saab has been quoted £120 for a new caliper and pads, fitted. That seems pretty reasonable but the garage is 25 miles away, the brake is binding badly and frankly, I can't be arsed. And last weekend, my wife fettled her own Mini back into good health. A new condenser and a set of HT leads (the old ones had disintegrated!) sorted that out. Still need to work out why it's FULL of water. That new sunroof is the key culprit but windscreen seal could also be to blame. As for the Bedford. Out of sight, out of mind...
