Hmm. The offer to purchase a French estate car.

Plus points?

It's cheap, it's diesel, it's local, the number plate is an amalgamation (if that's the right word) of my kid's initials/surname and I used to own it before.

Bad points:

I used to own it before.

It's rougher than a prostitute's arse after it's been attacked by a power sander.

No storage space.

Fix the 190. Fix the 190. Fix the 190. Fix the 190. Do I need to go on?

Yeah?

That is on the cards, hoping to have a bash this weekend. Hopefully it's down to just finding the fuel pump relay and bridging it to see if that was the problem. I might also see if the dog rough 190D I got offered a while back is still up for grabs.

Even the man himself now agrees. So do I.

It's saying.."fix me, please - I want to live to charge around scummy housing estates looking mean and moody"...

Yeah?

Do you want to swap the relay from my E200 to see if that's whats causing the problem? No point spending money if something else is wrong.

Cheers Wazzer, I'll give you a shout on that.

Not sure about the Fiesta alloys on that nice Mk 2 Cortina?.

I got the original radio in my Opel wired up today and it works!, It even has a nice crackly old fashioned sound to it, even when listening to Virgin 1215 or whatever it's called now.

Still can't work out what 'K' and 'U' mean on it though.

Get the BX and sell it to Peter C who wants a good winter car!

Peter C can have it if he wants, the lad only wants eighty quid for it. I'm struggling like hell with space here, if all else fails will have a word with a bloke at work who stored my old Merc 609D when I was stuck.

Long Wave and VHF (FM) isn't it?

Yarghhh. Accidentally drove away with the handbrake on in the Jag.

Now I need new handbrake shoes. Fucksticks.

Are they inboard discs ala the 'series' XJ6 models Pete?

I think K could either be long wave, or, short (kurz) wave, which is still very popular among the boxheads. Short-wave is sometimes called UKW for Ultra-Kurz Welle (Welle means wave).

So after all that bollocks I just said, you're probably no better informed Mike!

No... which is lucky. Priced 'em up at the local parts emporium and they're £22 a set, which isn't too bad but they can't get them in until tomorrow. It's the drum in disc setup (like on a Merc or, ahem, Vectra) so I'm going to wait until Friday and do them then. Just means I'm going to have to put up with that scratchy zip zip zip noise if I apply the handbrake between now and then. It still works fine, it's just bloody irritating if the window is open until it releases fully.

£22.00 is pretty good as you say. Can't remember soz but is your's an auto or manual? If it's the former at least you have 'park' to rely on!

Currently pondering whether to get rid of the Passat. Heater now working (albeit it a bit noisy) and water leaks cured plus we've done a couple of other jobs.

Had looked at the 'strange' turbo problem whereby it seems to pack up when warm, moore Googling reveals probably blocked pipes or something like that.

We did remove the badly fitted 'thing' on top of the rocker cover that feeds the turbo and although it did make the turbo appear to work when warmed up it runs a bit rough like shit in the fuel or something at high-ish revs.

I get the feeling we're getting nearer to the problem (and fixing it) though slowly but surely I'm finding things like this are getting fucking annoying.

I still want to like the car and the extra room (and economy) over the car it replaced are very handy.

No, no, no, no no. YES! YES! Then no again.

That's about the order of getting the 190 going just now. With the help of the jolly gents on the 190 forum I eventually found the fuel relay.

Bridged it between the numbers suggested, not a jot. Then realised there were two similar numbers (87 and 87V) so bridged them instead.

First turn of the key-EUREKA! Fired up for about five seconds then died. Happy days.

Tried again, fired up then died. I wasn't actually in the car then, I was leaning through the window so wasn't able to give it a little throttle.

Anyhow after the initial success the bastard won't start again now so hoping it's just the relay knackered though it does still click. 1/4 tank of juice in it and when I whanged the plugs out they were wet.

Back to the drawing board I think, like I say hoping it's just the relay knackered. Still, well chuffed it fired up and it's given a ray of hope that we're nearly there with it now 8)

Cavette, how old is the fuel? If it's gone off you will have trouble getting it going.

Probably at least a year old Tainly. The desperately hopeful in me thinks if it ran for a few seconds it *should* run on the old fuel, but it's probably because I don't want to think about removing the tank and draining the petrol!

2CV is not well. Had pinking issues on the Swiss Trip, so retarded the ignition timing a bit and clocked up a couple of thousand miles.

On the way down to Winchester this weekend, the 2CV was pinking like crazy, so I pulled over and knocked the timing back even more (which of course is a faff as you have to get the fan off). I think this actually went a little bit too far, as the engine was now a little off with power, which isn't good if you're in a fully laden 2CV. It was still pinking a bit as well. I know th static timing is well off - the camshaft is worn so getting the right timing for both cylinders is just impossible.

So, I think I'm going to have to admit defeat and fit my spare engine again, and maybe I'll actually get around to rebuilding this original engine this time...

Despite the engine being knackered and having rubbish ignition timing, she did of course put up with yet more flat-out driving, including impressively out-dragging a Mitsubishi Pajero 2800 towing a caravan. If it was a 2500, I would have pissed all over it, but it was a close battle...

Tis indeed an Auto, I wanted full waft-o-maticness. Good 'box actually, seems to guess what I want pretty well. Kickdown is immense!

Have you plugged it into a VAG-com machine? They're bloody good, it'll tell you what's wrong. If it does it regularly, I'll bring my OBD freezeframey thing. All you need to do then is plug it in and take it for a spin, if it plays up the OBD thing will find it.

Hmmm. I want to put a bigger engine in the Hillman so its better for towing. Definitely need to get it done before next spring. Was going to try and find a 1725 lump. But been out with a mate tonight who has basically offered me the good 318 Mopar engine that he's recently replaced for a 340 in his Dodge Dart.

It would be daft. But I quite like the Chrysler connection....:lol:

I found some engine dimensions earlier and just wandered outside with a tape measure. Phew! Its not going to fit without drastic surgery to pretty much everything. Back to plan A then.

What you need is a lovely 2.0 Pinto with a badly-jetted carb off a V6 Granada, different-coloured HT leads and a poxy K+N air filter mounted cock-eyed on the top, you'll be able to go a little tiny bit faster and at the same time enjoy hugely increased fuel consumption. Win Win Win!
