Right. The time has come where Mr S's Clio has reluctantly got to go.Thre's another Sporty Jr on the way, so the little French Rocket(!) just isn't big enough. So, shiters, I'm looking for ideas.Must be:1. Roomy (pref Estate)2. Not TOO big on the outside3. 54 reg or newer (for cherished plate)4. A bit different......Pref not:1. A 4x42. An MPVI had suggested a 3series touring, because I quite like them, and she's into that. But I have been wondering whether that's just going to make us look like pseudo social climbing twats. So, let's hear from your collective experience and imagination. Self pimping of anything you've got for sale is also welcome, as are enquiries to buy the Clio! So, let's hear from your collective experience and imagination.PS, I'd love to have her drive some real shite, but she just won't. End of.

Volvo V40's go up to 2004, the very last ones called 'Classic' come loaded with all the luxuries. Nice looking cars, not perfect, but good and safe for the kids. Avoid the GDI engine though. I suppose a V50 is also a possibility - but the V40's are a bargain. You can get them on a '54. And less image problems than a BMW.

Whats your budget?

Up to about £7000. Got a plan? :D

Alfa 156? Mind you, the estates actually have a small boot than the saloons, don't know how they managed that.

Estates:Diesel Rover 75 'Touring' or MG ZT version - not sure how much actual space you get with these.Subaru Legacy Mazda 6 Struggling to really fufill the 'different' bit really! If you just wanted an estate I'd say Mondeo, Octavia or Passat, hardly vehicles that stand out  .'Different' and 'under £7000' and '2004 or newer' generally means things that didn't sell very well, often this is for a good reason!

That was one that crossed my mind, but I found myself hearing things like "unreliable" and "electrical problems"Also found that there didn't seem to be much price difference between these and Bee Ems :?

Perodua Kenari.

More seriously, I've always had an unexplainable hankering for a Toyota Corolla Verso. A Yaris Verso gets more shite points though, for being catastrophically oddball in looks.

I can highly recomend an Octavia Estate as a practical everyday economical load lugger.About as interesting as boiled cabbage though. They make great £3k cars, not sure about £7k though.

Honda Accord wagon, the wierdly shaped one from the Rapper's Delight ad. Preferably in that dark grey that makes it look like something from star wars.

Good stuff coming in, shiters.

I think Mrs S may have her heart set on the beemer.

She's said a firm NO to any Volvo, X type Jag or Saab, all of which I thought were fairly cool choices.

Doubt she'll go for the Rover as she'll see it as too big. Versos are a bit too much like people carriers for me to allow on the drive. Focus, as much as it's a cracking car, is a bit ordinary. She mentioned Octavia briefly, but probably because they're a bit like Golfs, and she likes Golfs. At the moment, I'm perusing the interweb looking for reasonably priced Legacies.

Any good?

Otherwise, keep 'em coming.

Octavia estate is just huge, and they're cheap too. The 1.9 boat anchor diesel is good enough. I'm a big Skoda fan so this one gets my vote. (And I prefer the Skoda image to BMW, even if Skoda is now VW).

I'd steer clear of the Legacy wagon really. Decent to drive and reliable. I think they're just too thirsty and the AWD is overkill. (Unless you live in the sticks).

Nissan Primera estate is a 'different' choice, they're cheap too. I think they sold them in the UK until 2006.

Since she's got a Clio now, how about a Megane estate? I don't know anything about their reliability but they look pretty sharp and I think the prices are good.

She's decided she doesn't like the Legacy  so that's off.Primera? I'd rather walk, and carry the heavy load of baby stuff suspended from hooks pierced though my scrotum. I have particularly bad memories of these things from my car rental days. She thinks the Mazda 6 is a bit dull, and apparently was joking when she suggested an Octavia  Been looking again at 156 Alfas, and think these may still be in with a shout, especially seeing as they actually seem to be quite reasonable in price now (don't know where I was looking previously)Meganes are known as Renault Migraines by a couple of mechanic mates, so a bit loathed to consider these!Just got to shift the Clio now, and go on a couple of test drives! Unless any more ideas come up :P

I don't know why Legacys are considered thirsty, they are barely any worse than comparable cars.

Posted

They do drink a little more than an equivalent car - my 2.3 Volvo 740 slushbox could top 30mpg with ease - my Legacy generally struggled to beat 28mpg (though it did always seem to average that, regardless of driving!). However, I'm pretty sure that my Saab drinks more than the Legacy, and Saab's don't have a thirsty rep really. Odd.

Not exactly fashionable (so ideal really  ) but a Kia Ceed estate should fit the bill. Balance of 7 year warranty should also bring some peace of mind. I've noted that Kia's are firmly marked as futureshite on here but I had a new shape Rio diesel for a couple of years from new and regret selling because it was a super little thing with loads of poke and 60 mpg. I've also driven a few others in the range and they are very competent if a little down on image. Great value though :D

I was going to suggest a CEE'D SW, but couldn't find one within the OP's budget. To drive, they are just like a Golf.

Seeing as I suggested an Accord on p1 I am guessing not.

How about a Mitsubishi Lancer estate? About £6k for a three-year-old and it looks fairly roomy inside. One should be reliable and the only snag is they are few and far beteween.

She seems a right picky witch, just get her an old 405, 740 or Montego and see how she reacts.

I am guessing you are hopelessly single then, M_Cu

Aye.I've never been with anyone who's been that bothered about my shonky old sheds though, but I have a feeling my car is starting to repel everyone in a 1km radius with its offensively clattery engine and veg oil streaked sides.

Just be firm :)like i said to my lady "I don't care if you hate me wanting to get an old car, it's my car so you can either walk, get the bus or travel in marks world of shite" To that she promptly said "I don't care"Result 8)
